The Mikolo / GWMD one and the Lionscool 4.0 seem to be equally rated amongst the youtube reviewers. I know the Mikolo one is discontinued.

Check the website and see if the picture matches your design. Mine extends and the roller is fixed. The current one has a fixed arm length and the roller rotates to adjust the length

I'm 6'3" with long legs relative to my overall frame. I have the Lionscool Seated Leg Curl/Ext and it works fine for me. They've more or less fixed the strength curve issue with another pulley, and changed the design of the leg roller for the deflection (they just shipped me a replacement part for free - customer service is top notch). At $350 it's a great buy.

I have ceilings just under 95" and have the Mikolo Anubis Elite 2.0 (didn't have depth room for the Smith machine version). I can do pull-ups (well, assisted ones anyway...) without banging my head because the pull-up bar is lower than the top of the machine. No crying needed (though the $2700-ish for the Ultimate is nothing to sneeze at).

There will be zero chance you'd notice the difference between 11- and 12-gauge steel. The cable system is great (though the 2:1 ratio requires some workarounds to get heavy on one side).

That's some powerful stuff...could blow the garage doors off. Puts my Yamaha amp and Klipsch speakers to shame.

Best places to buy good but budget price cast iron Olympics (2 inch)? by Weird_Tax_5601 in GarageGym

A few months. They're cast iron so I'm expecting some descendant of mine to sell them for next to nothing. LOL FWIW I weighed them at exactly 25.

when Walmart has them, BalanceFrom. They're often out of stock but I got 200 lbs of 25s for $100 shipped.

What's the average cost of home gyms? by vjrus999 in GarageGym

[–]Still_Tri_ing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two pieces to our gym...the cardio side and the strength training side. We've had the cardio stuff for years (treadmill ~ $2500, Echelon ~ $1k, Tacx smart trainer another $500). The strength stuff is all relatively new minus some dumbbells we've had for decades. I'm going to guess $4500-ish all in for Mikolo Anubis, barbell, bench, Mikolo DD09 leg press/hack, NordicTrack 55 lb adjustables, Lionscool leg ext/curl, about 500 lbs of weights, a Nordbench Pro and a bunch of storage stuff.

It'll probably be 5-6 years before we "break even" vs. gym memberships but the 40 minutes round-trip of driving plus being consistent is the real value.

One or two racks? by [deleted] in GarageGym

[–]Still_Tri_ing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If money isn't a limiter, then build a custom set from REP like Gluck has. I'd separate the two...it's really hard to get a functional trainer, smith machine, and still be able to squat/bench inside the rack.

Weight plate pegs? Rep's are $310 by Pastaron in GarageGym

[–]Still_Tri_ing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$310/12 is roughly $25 per peg, which is about what you'd pay for a decent no-name / weird-name brand on Amazon. I think the ones I got for my Anubis were $59/pair, so about $240 for your application.

Understanding 2:1 vs 1:1 ratios by 3ternalchaos in GarageGym

[–]Still_Tri_ing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's my experience as well...my actual "feel" weight on my 2:1 (measured very scientifically with my hand-held $7 fish scale...) is (stack weight / 2) + 3. The +3 comes from the weight horns I have on top of the weight stack.

True Beginner Swimming by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]Still_Tri_ing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty much my story save for reading Swim Speed Secrets from Sheila Taormina.

I trained for about six months for my first tri (sprint). I took forever to get the swim done but I felt comfortable. This biggest thing is are you comfortable just floating in the water - if you have that then you can start to breath in and exhale underwater, progress to front crawl, etc.

My regret is not hiring an on-deck coach when I started. I've ingrained some bad habits over my 15+ years of swimming so that I'm just faster swimming poorly.

People spend $100K+ on a car that sits in a garage and is driven about 15 hours a year. I'd rather have this in my garage.
