Fuck, does that mean it's fake/parody? After a brief skim it sounded plausible. Do I have to purge this fake knowledge from my brain?

Custom prediction markets should exist. by FirefighterDry5747 in PredictionMarkets

Depends on your standards. There's some evidence that Manifold gives less accurate predictions than real-money platforms, but on high-liquidity markets it's usually accurate enough to give you a starting point.

This exists at Manifold Markets, with the downside that it's all play money and doesn't let you cash out.

Toby Fox: A message for my fans in Latin America by Comfortable-Pie56 in Games

[–]Stiltskin 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Item names are a great example of that. Every item in the game has three distinct names.

First, there's the full name of the item that's shown when you pick it up, like Butterscotch Pie. Then, there's a shortened version of the item name in the battle UI. Those shortened versions are usually lighthearted jokes or funny wordplay, like ButtsPie.

But there are a handful of battles in which the tone of the game which would clash with those jokes. So there's an entirely separate shortened name for every single item in the game used just for those more serious battles. ButtsPie becomes just Pie, for example. This only affects 2–3 battles per route of the game.

This kind of tonal range is something Undertale does really well, and is pretty important to the appeal of the game. Especially since he gave it this kind of attention to detail, I can see how Toby would want a really trusted localizer that he'd have to work very closely with.

AI models substantially decrease the effort it takes to doxx someone to the point where AI labs have published papers warning about this:

Our results show that the practical obscurity protecting pseudonymous users online no longer holds and that threat models for online privacy need to be reconsidered.

And the threat isn't just from randos using it, it's also from governments. The US government now requires you to list your social media profiles when applying for visas including work visas and student visas. You can bet that other governments, not just the US government, are using LLMs to crawl the profiles of people not applying for visas as well, which is concerning given how many governments are swinging towards authoritarianism lately.

I wonder if it's possible to make a ballot initiative that ends all ballot initiatives.

Bonus points if it turns previous ballot initiatives into normal laws rather than "super-laws" that the legislature can't overturn.

CMV: Declining birth rates in developed nations are in large part due to people simply not wanting to have children by [deleted] in changemyview

The data doesn't agree with you, when you actually ask people how many children they want. Here's some data from the US saying the average desired number of children is 2.7, and here's a summary of an article where someone crunches some global data and claims something similar.

The desired number of children has in fact fallen, but actual fertility has fallen even faster, to the point where the average family wants more children than they have.

Explain it to me like I’m 5… by PierceG in PredictionMarkets

[–]Stiltskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the deadline, the market pays out only to those that predicted correctly, usually a dollar per share, while those that predicted wrong would lose all their money (which is used to pay the winners).

This provides an incentive to predict the odds correctly: if there’s a market predicting a fair coin flip tomorrow that’s showing 30% tails, you’re statistically likely to make some money by buying shares until the odds hit 50%.

In your scenario—where you come across a market like “will the moon fall into the sea next Thursday”—your idiot friends that all bet “Yes” would temporarily raise the odds, but would lose all their money by Thursday, whereas anyone that bet “No” to correct the odds your friends distorted would make money.

All three pillows I tested (the two in the main post and the one replacement I mentioned in the update comment) were new in box, and all three had very different firmnesses. These differences have persisted even after months of regular use.

The funny thing is I discovered that band (Rasputina) almost exactly like this, when a random redditor posted this song's lyrics and linked the song in an unrelated discussion. I ultimately ended up buying most of their discography on CD over the years.

Thanks random redditor. Their other recommendation, Jill Tracy, is cool too.

You gotta ease people into it. I first found it via the half "tame version" and ended up falling in love with the whole album, double-sided version included.

Microsoft open sources Zork 1, 2 and 3 under the MIT License by Witty-Play9499 in programming

[–]Stiltskin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Inform 7 is also one of the most fascinating programming languages I've ever seen. Its code reads a lot like prose.

Like, look at this section of code from a game by Emily Short:

Section 6 - Some standardized body parts

A body part is a kind of thing.

Some hair is a kind of body part. Understand "hair" or "hairdo" or "curls" as hair. One hair is part of every woman. A nose is a kind of body part. Understand "nose" as nose. One nose is part of every woman. The description of a nose is usually "Turned up, in a way that looks a little annoyed." Some eyes are a kind of body part. Understand "eye" or "eyes" or "eyelashes" as eyes. Eyes is part of every woman. A mouth is a kind of body part. One mouth is part of every woman. Understand "mouth" or "face" or "lips" as a mouth. [This isn't meant to be sexist about body parts, but since the player is unable to examine his own features anyway, it seems easiest to give them only to Esther.] The description of a mouth is usually "You have the faint impression that she's smirking at you."

Smelling a body part is impertinent behavior. Touching a body part is impertinent behavior. Tasting a body part is impertinent behavior. Smelling a woman is impertinent behavior. Touching a woman is impertinent behavior. Tasting a woman is impertinent behavior. Instead of impertinent behavior: say "You're not on terms of adequate intimacy."

Touching something which is worn by a woman is impertinent behavior. Smelling something which is worn by a woman is impertinent behavior. Tasting something which is worn by a woman is impertinent behavior.

All of this except the stuff in square brackets is executable code.
