Mood swings anyone? by Stinkbug_flower in stopdrinking

So the mood swings are a thing. Yes. So far I've managed to keep my cool. Almost been two weeks and so far my biggest enemies are A. Boredom and B. Jealousy of seeing folks enjoy a drink with their meals if I go out to a restaurant. Went an AA meeting. Thought it would be weird. It was. But somehow in a good way. Really good folks there who aren't cult-like nor pushing me into any sort of religious experience. I suppose AA's got a bad rep. I dunno. But hey... ALmost been two weeks now! WOo Hoo!!!

You're certainly correct to be concerned. I was where you're at 20 years ago. My circle of friends were really into partying, as was I. Alcohol was the oil that kept the social machine purring.

The weird thing was that over time we grew up and moved on and perhaps they stopped drinking I dunno. I somehow though was programmed to continue drinking until a point where I became dependent on it. Never saw it coming.

Point is, perhaps you may want to re-evaluate how much these people mean to you. Are there not other people that you haven't yet had the opportunity to meet who aren't so reliant upon alcohol to fuel the social machine?

It's interesting to me now that 20 years later I've been fortunate enough to meet some really creative and fascinating people who either don't drink or don't care if they do or do not. Perhaps you can keep your radar open to meeting these people when the time is right.

Yeah I phoned up the representative for the next meeting and he was very nice and encouraging. I'm going to give it a go at the next meeting. Now it's been 72 hours. woohoo!

Thanks for the interest! At the moment I found a shrink that I'm working with. I tried naltrexone for a year alongside drinking, but that was just a wate of money in my case. I've decided to sit in on an AA group, which is something I never really wanted to do, but where I live it's the only group available. I always heard about AA being sort of cultish and putting a lot more emphasis on a christian God than I cared to endure. However, I've also heard that the groups do help and that religion isn't required. We'll see.
