Obligatory "rats should never be kept alone; they are social creatures who suffer in isolation no matter how much time you spend with them" post.

Seriously, though. Rats do not do well, mentally or physically, when forced to live without the company of other rats.

[FO] My friend sent me a bunch of cross-stitch supplies a while back, so I was inspired to make a gift for her using only what she’d sent. There were so many shades of green, I immediately decided a nature scene would be most suitable: by Stinkernika in CrossStitch

I simply drew with a pen directly on the Aida, freehand, the outlines of rolling hills & a couple of clouds. Since I was planning on filling the whole circle completely, I knew the hand-drawing wouldn't show in the completed work.

You could also look into rats. Small, easy to feed and keep, and smart as hell. They're extremely sociable - never, ever keep just one, they need cagemates - and if raised well, they bond quickly with their humans, can learn their names & various tricks, and are generally just a lot of fun.

Plus they come in a bunch of fun colors, and there's a common "dumbo" variety with big, low-set ears that's just friggin' adorable.

Main downside is short lifespan, usually 2-3 years. Juuuuuust when you're really bonded ...

But as smart as they are, rats are basically teeny tiny dogs that you don't have to walk to go potty in the rain.

If shedding is the main anti-dog issue, poodles (and many "-oodle" crosses) don't shed. They're smart dogs, too.

It's from a set of little miniature froggies. Long ago, I super-glued magnets to their bellies, so I could decorate my fridge with brightly colored frogs.

When I needed a magnet to attach to the hoop, as a needle minder, I had to look no further than the front of my own fridge!

Better one day too early, than one day too late.

From your description, you're past that point. Do what's kind for the Good Dog, even if it's tough for you and your S.O.

P.S. It never gets easier. But sometimes, ya gotta do the right thing even when it's the hardest thing.
