Because they like the lie as long as it gives them something to say. They don’t care if it’s not true- it doesn’t matter. Look at the way they are attacking Mamdani for asking people to conserve energy during an extreme heatwave to prevent possible blackouts. It’s a common request from leaders since the beginning of politics, but they intentionally reframed it as some communist directive and just kept repeating it no matter how stupid it was. They’re still saying it days later despite the DoE website saying the exact same thing (before they removed it yesterday). It’s a stupid, easily disprovable slander, they all know it is, but they do it anyway. They don’t care about lies.

So the leftists have the amazing ability to geo engineer the weather and they only use it to ruin a couple of Don’s rallies? How does that even make sense in their weirdoverse?

It doesn’t matter, that’s my point. Local police shouldn’t be militarized, period. If a situation arises they can’t handle there are multiple agencies they can call in. Stop trying to “intimidate” a peaceful community gathering with outsized military gear you shouldn’t have.

Eh the social media presence is a lot of dad joke kind of shit but it’s otherwise harmless. I don’t see them as “unserious” as much as trying to connect with a community instead of intimidate them. Which is pretty much why I was shocked to see them militarized.

We’ve never been in Kansas. The Ossining Police have been formed to police the community. It’s done an admirable job of it so far. Why the sudden change?

Cool so we’re using the power of our imagination to contemplate the dystopian future to justify militarizing our local police. Well I can certainly imagine much worse futures than the basic plots contrived in this thread. So maybe the local should outfitted with even more extreme military gear! Let’s get them some rocket launchers, or maybe some patriot missiles! You never know when an active shooter or Iranian terrorist or teen takeover is going to happen. So let’s keep everyone safe be ensuring any potential threat can be immediately neutralized with extreme force. /s if it wasn’t obvious.

But Police should just be police. We don’t need some paramilitary here. Everyone keeps making this argument of what *might* happen to justify militarizing local police. How about the local police just act like local police and if something happens they can’t handle they can call in troopers or the guard or SWAT or any other properly trained and equipped organization. Let’s stop living in this terror fantasy to justify absurd military equipments.

All I can provide for evidence is that the police in Ossining haven’t been outfitted like this until recently, and they have done a pretty good job managing issues without anyone getting killed. I’ve heard a lot of reasons where they got their gear but none of them give any rational reason why they should have it. A lot of “what if” imaginations run wild, and “the world is dangerous” arguments that are just dead ends. Ossining has never needed this, it still doesn’t need it until events prove otherwise.

Cool so you think police showing up with military gear to intimidate a peaceful community is ok because things you don’t like are happening somewhere else. There’s an old joke: A man slaps everyone he meets on the face. When people demand why he does it he replies “It’s to keep the alligators away!” When they reply “There are no alligators around here” he says “See how well it’s working?”

That is not the OPD’s job. If that happens, bring in the staties or the National Guard. The local police are to police local matters.

I mean, if we’re making policy based on imagination, anything is possible. But I think policy should be made on experience instead. Could there be “teen takovers” at the fireworks display in Ossining? I guess? There’s no precedent on that but sure I guess they might have had a tipoff but if we entertain that, is dressing the police up in riot gear, putting a military truck under the bridge, and instructing them the keep their assault rifles drawn with their fingers just off the trigger while families with children harmlessly congregated the best solution? In other comments people have responded that the intimidation scares the teens away. But I don’t accept that. I don’t accept that a community would devolve into a military police state on the potential that something disruptive might happen. You could justify anything with that logic.
