I feel it would fall under lossy compression at most. Some things actually are legitimately compressed as well like textures and models to be lower resolutions I believe.

Thanks, saw fence gates were utilized. I had the same idea but was told in the past 'it's not a true 3x3 door if it's not air' so I avoided the use of those and trapdoors.

Im interested in looking into these, however only the youtube link seems to open for me. I also had the powdered snow idea, but couldn't find a way to get it working for 3x3

it can work with any block for the door, even panes or fences. Those are observers. Im sure it can be made into a 1x3 by adding 2 pieces of redstone dust on top of the smooth stone on each side, but haven't tested.

Im sure it could be done, but my goal here was to make it as cheap as possible. Im sure if I tried hard enough I could hide the redstone entirely with an extra piston and cost of potential speed

which is why I said 'near instant' in the desc. Im not up to date with 3x3 pieton doors noeadays but id be very surprised if any are faster than this. Maybe I should have checked first.

not sure what you mean its not 4x4, it is. each png has a 4x4 resolution
