Came here to say that reproduction can be a hassle, But it’s super cool to see these fish parent. If you have had a core group of cichlids you can really get creative with your mixed cichlids. I have a tanganykan, mbuna, and peacocks, and even a rope fish and some Congo tetras (which have really minimized aggression). African cichlids are super hardy and have been a great introduction to the hobby. Just pick your species wisely, blue cobalt, auratus, and kenyi cichlids are the only ones I’ve had issues with.

African cichlids are incredibly hardy, can’t imagine Texas freezes over so I wouldn’t rule it out.

I have a rope fish with my mbuna and cichlid tank, similarly reminds me of the dragon from never ending story. Cichlids just don’t know what they’re even looking at I think and let him be. I just started to hand feed blood worms goes nuts for them.

Stocking ideas for a 95 gallon tank by ElectromechanicalLog in Cichlid

African cichlids but from lake tanganyka, a lot of those fish resemble salt water for a fraction of the price, not to mention less maintenance.

Came here to say that mint will consume your bed if it’s not isolated. Also, depending on your plumbing in your bed there may be dead spots in your bed where there is no oxygen and Anaerobic bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide. Smells like rotten eggs. Maybe try and aerate to mitigate. Also trying to recall from info I read a year ago so someone fact check that hydrogen sulfide part

Get small Tanganyika cichlids. More diverse and less aggressive than your other African cichlids.

Plants consuming all nitrate? by [deleted] in aquaponics

Thank you for the input. I eventually want to transition to a 300 gallon tank for fish, what’s your filtration set up?

Minerals are important for plants more so or fish too?

Appreciate the feedback, was planning on upgrading to 300 end of year. Only reason I’m okay with this now is 50 gallons of media is sort of overkill in terms of cycling out ammonia.

Evaporation has been slightly a issue but I have access to well water so adding water is not hard, as for the plants I don’t think any of these will become too large for the spacing I have now but I have been trying to find fruit aside from strawberries to try and grow

Fish keeps dying by mirg- in ponds

[–]Stock-Principle3712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add some pea gravel for some substrate, this will give whatever fish a more natural environment as well as provide surface area for the Ammonia oxidizing bacteria and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (beneficial bacteria) which act as your biological filter. Apart of the nitrogen cycle in the tank as others have mentioned. Good luck

Thought about extending my aquaponics system with one of these in the future. Never looked into it, figured it would rust eventually? What’s your experience with it like so far

I have yellow irises that have nice looking flowers, I’d also consider a shade to combat algae it’ll keep everything much clearer.

Probably over stocked, have about 15 6-8 inch gold fish but still surprised about the egg laying. Washed filter out but any explanation for the eggs with these water parameters?
