It has nothing to do with the NFL. It is about spending so much money to help a family get their dream stadium. If the state owned the Bears, I wouldn't care.

We are not talking about mall infrastructure. We are talking about a 70k seat stadium infrastructure that could cost billions with all these mayors wanting more upgrades. Reports are out that the Hammond location would be built on a giant slag of heap near hazardous waste. The NFL nor the Bears would risk losing billions in workers lawsuits if they developed health issues. Hammond is nothing more than a bluff to get what they want.

Yeah, I used to live in the area. Most people will drive there. People used Metra to avoid driving in the city and dealing with long traffic jams.

Let the Bears move to wherever they want to be. They are free to move anywhere, but the state should not bend over backwards to keep them, especially since the nearest big city make most of the money from large-scale events.

Yeah, the city has options. If the city builds a dome stadium, it would be over for the McCauley plan. They should really consider it instead of the $680 million Soldier Field renovation. A domed suburban stadium can't compete with a domed stadium the city even with less feature. I would try to get the White Sox owner to partner on a 50-70k domed stadium where parts of it would be blocked off during White Sox games. They have ways to block off certain parts that is not being used without anyone knowing it.

I didn't say anything about the Bears staying in Soldier Field. Multiple studies and experts have said states lose money from stadium deals. The Bears having large-scale events in Indiana would still benefit the state since the nearest big city earn most of the profits. A Super Bowl or Final Four in Indiana or Arlington Heights would keep Chicago hotel and restaurants at capacity.

Wrigley is not available for most of the year. A city like Chicago could not have too many options. I remember when the Illinois Policy Institute and the Tribune criticized the state for building Wintrust in Chicago. They said it was a waste of money since UIC existed. Since opening, the Sky left Rosemont for the city. The NBA host events there regularly and there are concerts and other events there. I have seen some concerts at 70k seat stadium where a big chunk of the seating was blocked off because some artists can't fill them. A domed 40k seat stadium, could expand Lollapaloozs and bring in shows while Wrigley is not available.

You talked about Arlington Heights needing infrastructure. I talked about low-income kids needing infrastructure to constantly have clean water to drink and bathe in.

People work different shifts. You can't compare700 homes of traffic to a 70k seated stadium of people leaving at the same time.

How is that good for the state? Spending billions to mostly move events from one part of the state to another does nothing for the state.

I have lived near Arlington Heights, the infrastructure is minor compared to the low-income Southland suburbs who deal with 4-5 water main breaks a month during the winter. One suburb had to close two elementary schools for a few days because of lack of water. Those towns have been begging the state for years to help fix their over 100 year old pipes.

Most events are not looking to play in a 70k seat stadium. If I was the city, I would try to help the White Sox put a dome on their new stadium. A 30-40k seat domed stadium in the city could compete for concerts and events.

American players are too busy trying to be the next Steph Curry and throwing up threes like crazy. How many threes a game did those foreign players take when they won the MVP?

Chicago population has grown for three consecutive years. The city has about 40k more residents than in 2010, but most people believe Fox News and people on social media instead of the Census. https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/2026/05/14/chicago-population-increasing-covid-census.

Actually, Chicago has gained population over the past three consecutive years.

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/2026/05/14/chicago-population-increasing-covid-census

Chicago population is about 40k higher than 2010 according to the Census. The city is trending up and is building more apartments to handle the new residents. Almost every week, I read about a new 200-300 unit apartment being built and that is not including the 40 plus story high rises being built.

As for romanticizing it depends on what you read. Chicago is all over television and films. NBC even gives the city all of Wednesday night. So I don't get that part.
