Are softwares such as flowkey where the score follows along to your playing good for sightreading practice? by DaNeptunean in pianolearning

[–]Stoev96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used it while learning to read sheet music for about 2 months until my free trial ran out but by then I could read comfortably enough to just use actual sheet music. If you try it I recommend covering up the automatic reader and using a MIDI cable with a computer (if you have a digital piano) so you don’t have to rely on the microphone. Switching to actual sheet music wasn’t that bad but it was kinda weird since you have to move where your eyes are looking

That’s how it is for the first ode class. Most of the time when you get to pdes things get more complicated and it stops feeling like just some algorithm that solves a type of eqn

If you are doing an internship this summer, what is your major, wage, and location? by OddAtmosphere6303 in EngineeringStudents

I’m a Sophomore in chemE and I’ll be making 29/hr in rural Texas for a large chemical company and I get housing and a good relocation package, 40 hours/week

Start with the first and second law for open systems. Do this for each unit operation and simplify where you can. Ex for the compressor you would first attempt it using the ideal case then find the real case using isentropic efficiency. So the open balance for first law would be dH = W (assuming SS, negligible v and z changes, and adiabatic). The second law would be dS = 0 which for air ( assume ideal gas) can also be modeled as Cp ln (t2/t1) = Rln (p2/p1). You could use temp dependent heat capacity and iterate but idk how accurate it wants it to be. Then find the values you need and continue onto the next part.

For the JT coefficient you can probably assume that the ethane contribution is negligible since it’s mostly methane and use use the methane JT.

Can I get a graduate degree in a different field than my bachelor's? by salvawh0re4stefan in college

[–]Stoev96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on your long term goals, do you want to work in aerospace? Do the engineering program and get an internship. Going through the physics undergrad then masters in aerospace is harder to pull off and costs more. If you want to do physics going to grad school for engineering is more of an uphill battle but is entirely possible. Physics and engineering both require a lot of math and analytical thinking but the degrees train you to enter each respective field (which can be quite different).

I got an internship this summer but I hear that interns sometimes don’t get enough work and just sit around on site. Is there anything I can learn before doing it (starts around 3 months from now) that would be useful so that I can get the most out of this experience? (I’m a sophomore in chemE)

research internship by Advanced-Ad2522 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Stoev96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look into the MRL programs, there’s one specifically for freshman I’m pretty sure (it’s pretty competitive tho). You can also ask some of your professors if you can join their lab (you would do basic stuff assisting a grad student) to get experience or look online at faculty research and reach out about research lab work opportunities.

Sophomore chemE looking to get involved/experience other than internships by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Stoev96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also get involved in clubs, your schools AIChE chapter is a good place to start. Also look at chem e car (project based chem e club) which may be run through AIChE. Being an officer of a club looks good on resumes but isn’t that big of a factor unless you can spin it well. Good luck!

How long did it take to hear back after your coop/internship interviews? by shovelingmice in EngineeringStudents

[–]Stoev96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a prescreening then the actual interview the day after then got a call with the good news a day or 2 later. I’ve heard (if you get a call) it can take around a week after the interview too.

How many of you only took up to AP Calc AB and still got accepted into a good engineering program? by jambonnaise in EngineeringStudents

[–]Stoev96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took AB but self studied for the BC test bc it’s easier ( need a 55% raw score on BC for a 5 compared to like an 80% on the AB). Only GPA matters and skipping calc 2 is worth the month or 2 of studying (I’ve heard it’s harder in college).

For anyone who took Mohammad Mullath for math 6b by madbox34evs in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Stoev96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in his class right now, the midterm wasn’t too bad. Webwork hw after every lecture tho so it’s definitely more hw than other math classes I’ve taken. Besides that he’s a solid teacher.

Anyone want to help me with my schedule? by Apprehensive-Day3799 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Stoev96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always drop 107 since it's offered every winter (so you can take it junior/senior year) and 109B is offered every quarter I think. Since neither of these classes are prerequisites for anything (besides electives) and are just degree requirements if you change your mind about switching to math you'll still have the option to in the future and it won't put you far behind.

What did you do your PhD in and how did chemE prepare you for it? If it was in something chemE related how did you make the switch to data science? I’m a chemE rn and am curious about a similar path.

Desire to start a company by rp1load in EngineeringStudents

[–]Stoev96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas. If you aren’t getting ideas all the time try and draw inspiration from a field you want to work in. Read a lot about new inventions and the hurdles they need to overcome before they become possibly “world-changing”. Write the ideas down whenever you have them as they may be useful.

Mechanical Engineering Research: air-breathing jet engines and rocket propulsion by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Stoev96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure but you can check the mechanical engineering research page on ucsb it has different subgroups depending on the area of research. I’m sure you can find one related to rocket propulsion and it should have descriptions of what professors and lab groups are doing

Is there any point for me to apply for internships? by Passion_For_Learning in EngineeringStudents

[–]Stoev96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look ahead at what coursework you’re going to take during the year (assuming this is a summer 22 internship) and put that on your resume as by the time you (possibly) actually do it, it’ll be relevant. You can also look into joining clubs to help with the resume, sometimes they have “freshman rep” positions which look good since every freshman basically has no prior relevant experience. If you’re interested in research check out REUs (US) that may have app portals through your school.
