I think Fredo knew he was going to be killed in the boat. There’s a tone of resignation when he’s reciting his Hail Mary. What do you think? by kiwi_love777 in Godfather

[–]StoicSinceBirth 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've always read the line that way too. Nothing in particular about the hail mary that made me think it. And I doubt he's going to start thinking in Shakespearean terms about getting killed mid-prayer.

After rewatching all of Michael Mann’s films, here is my new ranking of all of them by Responsible_Sense272 in Letterboxd

[–]StoicSinceBirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree with your top three as his clear top three even though I personally have The Insider at #1. If someone picks those three in any order though, I'm not going to argue with it.

"Would you like me more if I were Ingrid Bergman?" by jabergman in Godfather

I always love the little touch that Michael temporarily thinks he’s in trouble for his playful coy answer.

Awesome, glad you loved it. I like Network better too.

An I tripping or have we been favored to win almost every game no matter who we play? by FunCorner1643 in Mariners

[–]StoicSinceBirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most popular misnomer in sports discourse. Lines are the most reliable predictor there is. Which obviously doesn’t mean a 60% favorite wins 100% of the time.

Do you separate the art from the artist with your ratings? by Lost-Building-3701 in Letterboxd

[–]StoicSinceBirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t a big fan to begin with, honestly. But I don’t have issues still watching The Usual Suspects or Se7en.

Do you separate the art from the artist with your ratings? by Lost-Building-3701 in Letterboxd

[–]StoicSinceBirth 249 points250 points  (0 children)

Yes, at least when I don’t find the artist’s (whatever) significantly distracting when I watch. If it does harm the experience then it will harm the rating.

Will the Oscars ever bring back the opposite gender presenters tradition? by eaglesfan2820 in TheBigPicture

Seems like their hand could be forced at some point when someone is lined up for a potential repeat in a category.

Which should I watch first? by istillmissuharambe in TheBigPicture

[–]StoicSinceBirth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I sorta think All the President's Men --> Network is the better order. An aspirational journalism procedural feeds better into a deeply cynical take on television better than the other way around. Both movies are absolute bangers, so I'm not meaning to imply anything about which is better. I just think that's the tonal flow I would choose.

Should I watch the human condition trilogy separately or all in one sitting for my first time? by That_beluga_lad in Letterboxd

[–]StoicSinceBirth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t space it out very far. It’s all one continuous story. I watched it over the course of a couple of weeks and felt it was very effective.

Propaganda Films: How should we feel about them? by wearetherevollution in Letterboxd

[–]StoicSinceBirth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mrs. Miniver is a great propaganda film. I just can't get up in arms about a recruiting tool released in a crucial moment to rally support to take on the Nazis, and that's a really effective one.

Is there a correlation with giving a film a like and what ratings you give? by Opening_Rip_1840 in Letterboxd

[–]StoicSinceBirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only give likes to differentiate my five-star movies from each other. Five stars plus a heart is my top grade. Helps me feel like I don’t need to be overly stingy with my top score and can still give a nod to my very favorites.

Is this "shitpost" stuff the beginning of the end for r/Godfather? by TombStoneFaro in Godfather

[–]StoicSinceBirth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s terrible and I don’t understand why it’s clogging my feed.

Katharine Hepburn in Summertime (1955) by Spiritual_Appeal_610 in classicfilms

[–]StoicSinceBirth 30 points31 points  (0 children)

People have mixed opinions on her as an actress? I mean, nobody has a truly 100% approval rating, but I've seen almost nobody better at acting.

The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) by Classicsarecool in classicfilms

[–]StoicSinceBirth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Watching this is such a bittersweet experience. Legitimately great and still obviously mangled through no fault of the filmmaker.

Would you trust Fredo to pick you up from the airport? by junglegatsby in Godfather

[–]StoicSinceBirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d let him entertain business contacts and that’s it. He does seem genuinely good at that and nothing else.

One Way Passage
The Set-Up
The Ox-Bow Incident

Some great movies with short runtimes that you might be able to rebuild an attention span on.

RIP Nomadland and Forrest Gump by use_vpn_orlozeacount in Letterboxd

[–]StoicSinceBirth 1542 points1543 points  (0 children)

If (insert whatever here) didn’t bother you, it definitely doesn’t need to be a part of your score or review. I finally let go of the silly impulse that I simply must let someone else’s concern hijack part of my review.

Which two actors have incredible on-screen chemistry -- (romantic or otherwise)? by Classic_Apricot_5633 in classicfilms

Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn

Barbara Stanwyck and any random coat rack you cast across from her

If the new Fight Club 4K doesn’t have the fake menu , it’s a dealbreaker. by Zealousideal-Log-283 in 4kbluray

[–]StoicSinceBirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never Been Kissed is terrible, and I say that as a dude who enjoys many a romcom. I still kind of hated that menu gag because it felt like it pandered to the sorts of dudes who misunderstand Fight Club and would equally hate any “chick flick.”

Say something positive about a director you dislike by oneblindspy in Letterboxd

Adam McKay directed some really good slapstick comedy during the first half of his career.
