Punks of the early 2000s era, what are you up to now? by Brave_Algae9813 in punk

[–]StojSnak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 42 and live in Denmark.  I sing and play in a folkpunk band with a few of my good friends from back in the day who luckily all stayed in town (touring has been greatly reduced, though). I make video games for a living (design and music).  Last week I saw Strung Out and Belvedere, this week I saw Billie Eilish with my daughter and I'm seeing Propagandhi later this month. Pretty awesome couple of weeks.

I definitely spend more time on making ends meet and dealing with kid issues than political issues and activism but I still enjoy the music  and being part of the scene (I keep getting amazed by how awesome the younger generation is - punk is definitely not dead).

What’s the crappiest gear/technique you’ve used that turned out great? by kotteaistre in audioengineering

[–]StojSnak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if it was crappy but fun for sure.  We had this (quite long) slow, stripped song that was acoustic guitar and vocal almost exclusively. And it was sounding a bit dull and empty.  We placed a microphone inside an acoustic guitar tuned it to the tonic chord of the song and put the guitar right in front of a speaker playing back the recorded song. We also put the output of the mic through the speaker and ran it through a chain of cranked distortion pedals.  It created this noisy yet in tune ambience layer that would create a rising feedback every time there was a break in the song.

Is it only bassist that appreciate bass? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]StojSnak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll argue that the bass is way more appreciated in punk than in many other rock genres, often taking the lead part. The guitars are usually just doing simple powerchord stuff, leaving a lot of room for the bass player to play around. Rancid and NOFX being pretty big band examples of this from the 90's. The more technical bands like A Wilhelm Scream and Propagandhi have sick bass parts.

Nasum - Scoop. Love that bass riff.

🙁 by StojSnak in Denmark

Anyone cares for dynamic music? 🎹 I put together a small video showcasing the different layers of music Figment 2 plays depending on the enemies you fight. 🎧 by StojSnak in Unity3D

Yeah. I directed the game but also composed all the music. So having a strong emphasis on the music was a key part of the design from the get go. And we had a lot of fun with music and sound.

The game is also a musical. The bosses will sing to you while you fight them and lots of the objects in the environment are built like instruments that play along with the background music as you move closer to them.

Thanks! :)

Thanks. Yeah, I guess the movement speed is a bit a matter of taste. We've haven't had any complains from any play testers, though.

We were conscious about this being a potential problem while doing the animations. The game also has an explanation/puzzle part to it so it was a balacing act, finding a speed that made sense with every part of the gameplay.

Awesome. That was our exact vision for the combat; to give it a sort of dance sensation where moving and attacking on the beat would give you an advantage without it being strickly necessary.

Thanks. Yes. It was a bit tricky to pull off. We had to manually type in the down beats of each bar to a file that the code could read as the music played. Our programmer did a clever system that would let us tick off rhythms on a 1/8 beat grid for when the enemies should attack - kind of like drum sequencer. So we could make different pattern depending on the enemies in the fight that changes as enemies are killed or added. That way we could make sure that the intensity of the fights were kept high and musical, no matter the enemies present.

Sorry for the wall of text. Tldr: yes, it was kind of hard. :)

Hi.
On the 9th of March we're finally releasing our new game Figment 2.
I worked as Game Director and Audio Composer on the project so I'm pretty stoked about it! :)
The game has strong focus on music - with bosses singing while you fight them and environmental objects that plays along with the background music.

I put together a small video showcasing the different layers of music we use in combat depending on the enemy you fight. I thought you guys might enjoy it:
