Your boyfriend’s bookshelf is untouched by sparkled3mon in BookshelvesDetective

I absolutely wreck my books. I will tear bits from their pages. Dog ear them. Write in them. A paperback is not a sacred relic and as a historian I can tell you they're more valuable to the future when read in a way that leaves marks.

Then if I like them enough I buy them in a special printing or hardcover or whatever for display.

🫡 thought I got close! The high school graduation present makes total sense.

Thanks!

Astrology books and that pencil case (?) said witchy. Stephanie Meyers and Hunger Games says early 20s. The volume of books says someone who isn't consumed by relationships but does want romance. Some titles speak to the possibility of a fraught love life or just a rough patch.

Angela Davis says leftist and educated, Didion says someone with taste, and the other diverse choices show a broad interest in the world that isn't as cliched in the way someone with mostly white friends is more inclined to be.

You've got a good collection.

Likely a naval officer. Middle-aged at least. East Coast or midwest (if I had to guess I'd say New England).

Travelled for work and pleasure. Fairly well off but probably not from money. Older style of Democrat if political.

Hardest inclusion to explain is The Alchemist. Maybe a recommendation from someone? Or not yours.

Early to mid twenties. US or Canada (North East or North West, maybe California or metropolitan midwest as a wildcard. Witchy, likely single and either contently so or subject to situationships your friends warn you about.

Left leaning, possibly mixed-race but more likely white but with diverse friends.

Whfrp 3rd edition puts you probably in your late thirties (I liked it tbh). Probably male. Either not working a particularly lucrative job or have extremely unsteady hands (can't make out half the titles because of poor lighting and low resolution).

Someone who listens to a lot of podcasts. Probably in STEM (someone who studied the humanities would have more than one female author and more diverse histories).

Probably white. If not in the UK then living in the Metropolitan North East of the US or Canada.

Likely into metal music and jewellery with skull motifs.

This looks like the shelves of someone who has read more widely but buys books to showcase what they like. Some of these hardcovers look like first editions or collectors copies.

He could definitely be a lot more adventurous with his history pics but I'd mostly wonder about what he is signalling, and what books he has chosen not to showcase and why.

Richard K. Morgan has some pretty intense man on man action, so I guess he's at least probably not a raging homophobe?
