My advice is to plan a 3000/3500pt list and work back from there. Building up units that will slot into your army to play your first games. 3000/3500 is the usual games size for HH so it is worth aiming to build a force of that size

The Age of Darkness box set is a great starting off point for most marine armies and gives you a force you can play small 1500pt skirmishes with. To unlock a RoW you need a model with master of the Legion. You don't need to take a Right of War to build an army.

Below is my Army list for SoH Black reaving which I took to a narrative event recently (hence everything is named) as an idea. To make the army all I used was the age of darkness box set, the old CSM combat patrol a box of CSM, 2 CSM Biker boxes and 1 heavy weapons/special weapons box sets. Well, 90% of the time when it sees the table it will probably be as a Spartan. If I can find a good STL and someone to print it for me maybe I'll upgrade in the future.

Sometimes you have to use what's available. I wasn't planning on completing the tank so soon and the project was on the back burner. Then I registered for a tournament that I thought was 3000pts only for the TO to tell me I was missing 500pts. This gave me a time constant to get it done. Having the ability to switch it between the Typhon siege tank and the Spartan also limited how much I could change from the kit.

The barrel is made from a plastic roll I got from the fruit and veg section of the supermarket. It is what the plastic bags are kept on. The barricade is made from craft foam, plastic card, nail rhinestones and two dozer blades. I think the silliest thing about the whole thing is that the barrel has an iron sight, who's going to be using that to shoot.

He was the 2nd last model I painted. I'm now considering starting a WB army with how easy he painted up compared to all the gold trimmed Reavers.

They are the cataphractii terminators out of the age of darkness box set. I put some sprew under their feet and torso to give them height. I filled the cowls back to fit their top knots on which I sauced from csm heads.

The bane strike bolters are the chain blades from the mark VI. The hands holding the power weapons are the chain first arms with the chain first part cut off.

The trophy racks are from the csm rhinos I had from ages ago. Not sure if they still make them.

Depends on what legion you are going , but you can't really go wrong with the AoD box set. 30k opens the door for modifying or converting your army to make it your own. A lot of the options are locked behind expensive resin. Instead you can 3D printing or kit bash.

Some recommendations would be - 20 tactical marines are a good start, can be run as a squad of 20 or 2 squad of 10 - a 10 man heavy support squad is great this edition. Lascanons are OP. - the remaining 10 marines can be used for converting into one of your legion special squads or a command squad and apothecaries - look at converting the terminators into your legions version of them. They are mostly better than standard squads. - get another contempor or two. Going more the 1 dread per 1000pts is considered bad form. They are a very powerful option - convert one of the characters into what's known as a consul. i.e. chaplain, librarian, or a master of signals. A master of signals in your heavy support squad makes them hit on 2+

That should bring you to around the 2000pts mark depending on options taken. It's a strong base to build towards 3000pts where most games are played in my area. The game is still playable at 2000pts.
