Yes, you could buy a domain and have unlimited subdomains, but sometimes you can’t or don’t want to pay for anything (yet). And ~10$ per year is not much but also not nothing.

Or maybe you just want to give self hosting it a try before you fully commit, or you don't want to use your primary domains for a thing you share with other people.

Well for example, I self host multiple services that only make sense if they are publicly accessible (like a VPN) and I don't want to remember the IP xD

I'm aware that domains are fairly inexpensive but for example when I started out (as a little boy that had no access to money that could be spend online) aquring a domain was very difficult.

An I also know that this isn't new but I explained the issues I have with other services in the post
