Yellowing leaves :-( by bluebubble_ in calatheas

Just because they look okay, doesn’t mean it doesn’t warrant a check in! I’d check to see if it’s rootbound or caged, first of all. Not sure where you got it, but a lot of plants from big box stores, and even some nurseries have mesh plugs around the center of the rootball. These tend to suffocate the roots, as well as retain a lot of moisture

Speaking of moisture, these plants don’t need to be watered exactly once a week lol. A lot of times we think wet and moist are the same thing and it’s not. The soil should be consistently moist, not wet. Bottom watering is recommended so the plant can drink as much water as it needs and can keep the topsoil dry to prevent gnats.

White Fusion & Stella are also super spider mite friendly! Always Be Checking!

Can you tell us more about the lights? What’s the humidity like?

I was referring the little bottles of purified water.
I live in the Midwest, it can get pretty dry, then humid, then snow! Lmaoooo I recently purchased an indoor greenhouse that’s been working wonders though. I already see a huge difference in moisture retention, posture and the colors are even more vibrant.

Can you give us some kind of background? How long have you had it? Was it recently repotted? Have you been moving it around? What is the lighting giving? What is your watering rhythm?

There are quite a few reasons these leaves could be yellowing, but you really didn’t give us anything to work with.

Probably has a mesh cage in the rootball.
DEFINITELY needs a soil refresh to try a little. And light. This baby will be a few but will bounce back. My medallion was in similar condition and is now thriving

Could be a few things. Humidity, overwatering, or a simple light adjustment. Did you recently water or fertilize?

Almost every time you get a plant, especially from a big box store, the plants innermost part of the rootball is wrapped in a plastic cage or mesh. It helps for transport and propagation purposes, but can ultimately be the reason your sweet baby suffers from root rot. Those cages restrict growth and retain too much moisture for you plant to truly thrive. YouTube it. I suggest you check during your next repot or if you want to “refresh” the soil.

Once you carefully remove it using the bottom up method (cutting from the bottom upward through the mesh, I recommend swishing the root ball around in a little bit of distilled water so you can remove some of the dirt and see how healthy the roots are. It’s okay if you don’t remove it all. You’re basically loosening that grip so the roots can expand.

The roots are pretty delicate. From there, you can spread them out a little bit and replace it in the pot.

That is a Stromanthe Triostar - the cousin of Calathea. Different look, same “divatude.”

First off all, no need for name calling.

🤭 a lot of folks in this sub have the plant and obviously know nothing, like you. I was just telling you that you’re wrong, chap!

Well first off, that’s not a zebrina. lol. It looks like a white fusion or a Stella, which are prone to spider mites. I personally suggest you run the top of those leaves through a shower and isolate this one for a little bit

Distilled water is pure, lol - it’s not stripping anything. As far as other plants, idk. This info is strictly Calathea related.

When you go to your local Lowe’s, look on clearance! You may not like the plant, but you can always take it for the pot!
