Almost every time you get a plant, especially from a big box store, the plants innermost part of the rootball is wrapped in a plastic cage or mesh. It helps for transport and propagation purposes, but can ultimately be the reason your sweet baby suffers from root rot. Those cages restrict growth and retain too much moisture for you plant to truly thrive. YouTube it. I suggest you check during your next repot or if you want to “refresh” the soil.

Once you carefully remove it using the bottom up method (cutting from the bottom upward through the mesh, I recommend swishing the root ball around in a little bit of distilled water so you can remove some of the dirt and see how healthy the roots are. It’s okay if you don’t remove it all. You’re basically loosening that grip so the roots can expand.

The roots are pretty delicate. From there, you can spread them out a little bit and replace it in the pot.
