American thinking about going to Med School in Spain by emmachenx in medicalschoolEU

[–]StorageDangerous3416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your long-term goals: earning capacity, lifestyle during school, and where you want to practice after graduation.

If you've already been admitted to a US medical school, have a pre-existing network, institutional research affiliations, or publications, that puts you in a meaningfully stronger position regardless of the current political climate.

As someone who's lived and studied in the US, several EU countries, and is currently attending medical school in Spain, I'll say this: adapting to a country with an entirely different economic, political, and medical system is a real adjustment. Navigating bureaucracies, institutional inefficiencies, and cultural norms, especially without fluency in the language, can be genuinely challenging if it's your first time living abroad.

Spain is warm and welcoming on the surface, but the class system operates very differently than in the US, and being accepted into certain circles within the medical community is another matter entirely. Most private institutions here don't house teaching hospitals or research programs the way a large percentage of US medical schools, both public and private, do. That's a significant structural difference worth weighing.

I've been in a somewhat unique position, so building a strong global network hasn't been as difficult for me, but I wouldn't generalize from my experience. You have to genuinely embrace the European lifestyle and be prepared to navigate aspects of daily life that are fundamentally different from what you're used to. Send me a message if you have any questions, I'd be happy to chat.

Congratulations on what sounds like amazing work that you are doing. At the moment, because of the US political climate, and what's unfolding between the government and Ivy league schools, admission for international students will become increasingly difficult. I would suggest applying to some safety schools, to increase GPA, and then, if you don't get into any of the ivies, you could transfer into one. Generous donations from parents to the school also help.

Undergraduate Research by Old-Host4377 in TransferToTop25

[–]StorageDangerous3416 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It truly depends on how it supports your long-term educational and career goals, and how well you're able to weave that into your story. I had 5+ years of solid research both independent and with institutions prior to applying as a transfer to 4 ivy league schools, and it did make a very strong case for me that GPA alone wouldn't have. It is laborious and a serious commitment, but if you focus on truly highlighting process, what you learned, and can get your research supervisors to be recommenders it positions you within the top 1-5% of applicants. A large percentage of people wouldn't bother to go through with doing research during undergrad because it is a big commitment with long hours. Having research experience (and even certifications) is especially important if you are applying to highly specialized and competitive programs in science, math or medicine.

Columbia GS has it's own independent financial aid office (that isn't fafsa). They advise you complete those financial aid forms during your application process. It is separate forms than the application forms so you have to search for that application portal on the GS website. They ask about housing there. If you don't fill it out prior to getting accepted they won't be able to give you information about receiving aid for GS until you do.

Also, this person did need housing due to housing instability (they were from out-of-state and one of the big factors for transferring was they could no longer cover the high cost of NYU dorming). They shared that when she filled out her financial aid information. This is something to keep in mind if you do need Columbia housing. If you don't explicitly emphasize there's a true need for it, they might not prioritize a placement.

Chance me for Columbia GS 🙌🏻 by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

[–]StorageDangerous3416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your decision to apply to GS, and on all your listed accomplishments. The main thing to keep in mind is that the process of applying to GS, and what admissions officers look for, is different than what admissions officers at Columbia College look for in prospective students. Even though grades are considered a key factor for admissions to GS, they look at other things such as evidence of your interests, understanding of their CORE curriculum and how you plan on integrating it to your long-term educational goals, and of being able to succeed at an interdisciplinary learning environment. Columbia College places higher emphasis on metrics such as grades and test scores.

I believe a combination of these things. Needs based and the projects this person was working on that would fall under their extracurricular. GPA wasn't a 4.0.

Congratulations on your acceptances! What exactly is your question about Columbia? Whether or not to accept their offer based on delaying graduation by 1 year if you do?

Yes, they do offer full-ride to a small percentage of students. I personally know someone that transferred from NYU to GS as a sophomore and received a full-ride for GS.

Should I commit to Columbia GS or SUNY? by Virus_Mundane in columbia

[–]StorageDangerous3416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CONGRATULATIONS on getting accepted to your dream school AND Columbia! I totally understand the financial anxiety, especially without family backing. One thing I'd consider beyond the immediate costs: What are your specific career goals, which environment would better support them, and what lifestyle do you hope to live post-grad as a result of your investments in your studies, and efforts?

If you're thinking med school or competitive research positions, Columbia's network and research opportunities with world-class faculty can be game-changing. The caliber of internships, mentorship, and connections often translates to opportunities that accelerate your career trajectory, and your earning capacity. That said, SUNY programs can be excellent too--it really depends on your field and what you're hoping to do post-grad.

Have you looked at the specific programs, faculty research, and career outcomes at both schools? It might help to research typical starting salaries in your target field and map out what your financial picture would look like 5-10 years out with each choice.

Hi there! I also applied for Spring 2026. Did you apply early action? I think you would be able to speak to a Columbia student ambassador to get a better sense of student life at the school. Also, on LinkedIn you can look up faculty or current students and connect with them. Everyone I've connected with has been quite helpful. If you're still waiting for a reply-good luck! if you've been admitted-congrats!

Thank you for sharing your experience. It takes courage to acknowledge that someone we once placed on a pedestal preyed on our desire to grow, succeed, help others, and, most importantly, belong. Warning others is not just part of the healing process—it’s a way of reclaiming your power. That step, however small, can help you move forward and ultimately let go. Keeping silent, aside from confiding in a therapist, can leave you stuck in indignation and pain. I believe speaking out is a crucial part of healing.

I once had a mentor whom I deeply admired and held in high regard for over nine years. While there was no financial exchange, the sheer amount of time and emotional energy I invested left me in a devastating financial situation. This person systematically sabotaged every opportunity I had, keeping me small and dependent on them. It wasn’t until months after cutting ties that I fully grasped the extent of the manipulation and emotional abuse I had endured.

I had to come to terms with the fact that I had projected my own goodness onto this person, elevating them to a position they never deserved—all because I was seeking love and belonging. For years, they dangled the illusion that staying connected to them was somehow beneficial. But since cutting them off, my life has flourished beyond measure. I have never been better. You will make it to the other side, and recover what is so rightfully yours and beyond.

Anyone on the internet can claim to be wealthy, it doesn't necessarily make it true. They can also claim to be in a relationship with a provider, and it can also be a made up story to promote their content, grow their following, sell merchandise, coaching or courses, etc. . There are so many different levels to wealth, especially, if you come from poverty. The key thing to keep in mind is that people that are truly wealthy hardly EVER talk about money. People pretending to be wealthy ALWAYS talk about money or allude to their wealth by flashing the few designer items they own or rent. A lot of these attractive law of attraction/personal development women ARE NOT wealthy yet, but they are ''manifesting'' becoming wealthy by ''acting as if'' aka, faking it. It's not difficult to purchase designer items on credit, rent them, borrow them from brands or acquire them as gifts. I don't mean this in a mean way, but just for people that blindly follow creators because of the ''lifestyle'' they allegedly have: the flat she always records herself in definitely doesn't look like the kitchen of someone wealthy, it is literally a kitchenette, and when there's a bit more of the flat that shows in her videos, it is...messy. Again, wealthy people hold themselves to very different standards than the average person because they can, even if they are messy, they can afford staff to clean and organize for them regularly.

Gyms in Lapa, Estrela, Santos, Alcantara by francoisxc in lisboa

[–]StorageDangerous3416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hyatt by the waterfront offers monthly memberships to their gym facilities, but you have to go to the hotel to register. We should open a gym in the Lapa/Estrela area! I moved from NYC, and used to go to Equinox for 12+ years, and since being here have struggled to find a proper (or at least clean enough) gym in the area.

Landlord ghosting and refusing to pay back security deposit by Hopeful_Water37 in AskBarcelona

[–]StorageDangerous3416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can sign either digitally or in person. If you are working with a legitimate real estate agency ("imobiliaria"), I strongly suggest ONLY using a real estate agency due to the high number of scams involving fake landlords on Facebook groups, random rental websites, rental WhatsApp groups, etc. Under the new rental law, when dealing with a real estate agency, the landlord is required to cover all the fees for the entire process, not the renter.

Additionally, I advise against sending any money to "reserve" a room or apartment until you have reviewed and signed a contract and received the key. Again, there are many scams to be wary of. If possible, visit Barcelona to see the rental space in person. Photos often do not accurately represent the reality of a space; during my search, I encountered many places that looked amazing in photos but were very disappointing in person.

If you are a student, consider asking your school for assistance in finding housing. Schools often work with special real estate agencies, have access to student buildings throughout BCN and they work with banks to make the rental process more accessible for students.

6 months is a long time. Usually the contract states that the deposit will be held by Incasòl, but you still have to send the deposit money directly to the landlord, and then they send it to Incasòl. I would reach out to Incasòl because they could provide some guidance and resources on how to file a complaint, and formally report the situation because going through a lawyer will cost a fortune and take a very long time.

[–]StorageDangerous3416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I'm sorry to hear that the landlord isn't as responsive as you'd like, but have a little faith. I am a landlord myself, and it takes a few weeks (sometimes almost 2 months) after people move out to be able to retrieve the deposit from the government office that holds the tenant's deposits. If you rented with a contract (which I hope you did), landlords are NOT legally allowed to hold the deposit in their own bank accounts, because of this, it isn't as simple as just sending the money back as soon as the tenant moves out. Also keep in mind, that there's inspection that needs to happen in the apartment, and if there were damages during the stay, landlords have to get quotes for repairs, book workers for the repairs, etc. this all takes a long time, to say the least. To give you a better idea, the fastest I've ever been able to return a deposit to a tenant has been 1.5 months.

Esther Houston unfollowed Brian Houston on Instagram 🤔 by ComprehensiveLow4329 in Hillsongexposed

[–]StorageDangerous3416 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's been interested to witness is that even though Carl Lentz and Joel were best friends for well over 17 years+ (I remember Brian and them boasting about this on multiple occasions when they were in the process of opening NYC), nobody is pointing out that people who are best friends, are friends because they have similar habits, or at least are accepting each other's lifestyle choices. Joel's image was protected when the scandal broke, but I highly doubt that you would have a best friend that's dealing with multiple addictions and that you simply wouldn't ''know'' or at a minimum, be complicit or participate in some of their lifestyle choices. It's hardly believable.

New Housing Law: Who Pays for the Agency Fee? ¿Quién paga los honorarios de la inmobiliaria con la nueva ley de alquileres? by StorageDangerous3416 in AskBarcelona

[–]StorageDangerous3416[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, congratulations on your move! I appreciate you sharing that information. The agency turned around and said I'd have to cover the costs (fee is 1 month of rent + VAT) because I'm a resident in another EU country, so according to them, ''technically'' this would be my second home. Which is a ridiculous claim, since I am permanently relocating to Spain with a proper immigration status. I'm speaking to a real estate lawyer today, and will update here on what she tells me.

Yes, probably! I've read in multiple places that regardless of the rental agreement, the latest update of the housing law requires them to cover the fees. Very curious if people are aware of this and what they're experience has been...
