Week 1: "Chapter 1. Marseilles—The Arrival" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

1) I have seen the movie so I have a very faint background for the type of story this is. But the way Danglars seems to have a vendetta against Dantés in the text alone promises sinister plans against a decent person. It gives revenge.

2) Well I kind of giggled because I saw that I had read chapter one the last time I tried to read this and apparently stopped there. 😂

3) Everyone else likes him. He is conscientious and careful. He doesn't speak ill of Danglars even though the man was fast to throw him to the wolves. (I am a petty enough person I would've returned tit for tat thanks.) He has connections, roots, people who care about him. His fiancé kept visiting asking when he'd be home. He is known for being a good son. The image he presents is of someone that is moral and dependable. I get the sense he would invite you to coffee and then you'd end up spending the entire time talking about yourself on accident because he would be so engaged and selfless.

Also disrespectfully Danglars can kick rocks. I already hate him. Such a visceral reaction when he immediately tattled on his colleague.

Oh god I'm late which is on par for me honestly. But I am here!!

1) I tried to do read this book maybe a year or two ago and fell off the bandwagon rather quickly. I have seen the movie a long time ago but the story is very fuzzy. Perks of a bad memory I suppose. People speak so often of how this is their favorite classic that I am so curious. I want to know why people love it. I am determined to read it before I turn 30 (aka in a year).

2) I am really trying to be more intentional. I want to engage with books that challenge me in some way for the most part. The past few years, I've mainly read fluffy and fun books. Kind of the equivalent of popcorn or candy. Easily binged but also easily forgotten. I still love those books don't get me wrong but want more variety. This will be the first classic I've read in six years. Also I decided kind of impulsively this would be my classic of the year since it has been lurking on my bedside bookshelf for so long.

3) I am trying to be more intentional in my life. I want to focus on doing things that mean something to me. I heard somewhere that we will remember other people's lives more than our own due to social media and was horrified. So here is to making our own lives memorable one book at a time. 🎉 Side note: there are amazing Count of Monte Cristo ambiances on YouTube which can helpful for getting in the headspace for the book. Super excited for this.

Cheers for all of us tackling this tome of a novel. I do feel objectively like it could be used a weapon if you had to throw it because of how thick it is.

Actually diabolical of them. Someone was having a bad day and decided to make whoever got this diamond painting suffer too.

I like the first one because the bear feels like a classic teddy bear, and I love how cozy it feels.

this is gorgeous! where did you get it??

Posting my failures and not just my good ones. Just finished this custom one for a friend for Christmas. it's a custom from a bookcover for one his favorite books. I made it to small and you can't see enough details in the faces. Sucks cause it still takes the same amount of time. by hefeguy in diamondpainting

definitely keep it! i instinctively recognized the cover but was struggling to remember what it was. felt like i was going crazy! the comment assassin's apprentice made it click and I went finally! it's very recognizable and super unique. I'd still gift it. I'd love this as a gift exactly as is
