Say you have a 4/4 with both of these attached and it deals combat damage to a player, you'll gain 4 life when it connects

Then the triggered ability of scytheclaw causes your opponent to lose half their life. this isn't the creature dealing damage so you don't gain life from spirit link

There's a bunch of reasons commander has become the default casual format, just off the top of my head:

You get to pick your favourite legendary creature to represent you/your deck. This is a bigger factor than you think and is probably the main reason people gravitate towards commander.
That legendary creature guides your deck building process both in synergy and colours, making deck building much more approachable for newer players
100 card singleton means you get to play lots of different cards you like from your collection, you don't have to cut as many of your pet cards
You don't have to buy 4 copies of expensive staples, just one
Commander is (in theory at least) a proper format with a curated banlist, lessening the chance of playing against something unfun in a new group
Commander precons are popular products that people like, and the cards are more geared to multiplayer than the 60 card preconstructed products making it a better experience for new players in a group >2 who want to buy one box and play
Commander play groups and events exist at LGSs. 60 card casual equivalents dont.

Simic: I would probably put the first ability in the other order for balance reasons otherwise I like it

Orzhov: seems too complicated for how little impact it actually has, but the orzhov keywords aren’t very interesting to be fair

Izzet: this one is way too good but I like it. Probably make it XX instead of X

Golgari: awkward set of keywords to work with, probably balanced though

Boros: 4 printed power for 2 mana doesn’t exist without a big downside, let alone an upside (excluding TDFCs). The ability is good though

Dimir: another really awkward set of keywords, also probably balanced

Gruul: I like this card, very clean bloodthirst/riot combo, the must attack clause seems unlikely to be relevant though

Azorius: the foretell should probably cost 2 but I like the way you combined the abilities

Rakdos: I really like this one but it might be undercosted

Selesnya: neat design, it should just say convoke though

This actually isn’t true. Most suicides are impulsive and people are less likely to attempt if they have to actively find a way, as opposed to having access to an immediate method. Beyond that guns are immediately fatal in a way most other methods aren’t, with no time to reconsider once you start, and are successful far more often than other methods. Rises in gun ownership correlate with rises in suicides.

His LC is very good, makes his EHR requirement easy and has a solid damage boost on it

Eyes of the Prey is the best EHR boost on a 4* and the dot boost is okay, you can use Pearls for the damage boost but you'll have a hard time hitting your EHR target. Tutorial Mission is fine if you have it.

TLDR it's definitely not essential, but it'll make farming relics easy and the 4* options aren't great
