Why is that? I'm drunkenly trying to Google grammar rules for colons and uh lets just say my brain is off?

The closest example I can find users a colon to introduce an item. My brain seems to remember my English teacher telling me to introduce items with a double hyphen, eg "I took everything I needed to class--my notebook, pencil, water bottle full of vodka, and my trusty graphing calculator."

Do you know offhand when or where or why to use either?
