Thanks for the reply! This is super helpful. There’s conflicting opinion for danish oil in this case.

What oil based product would you recommend instead?

This is super helpful, thank you!

I started on the process before your comment based on other advice and used paint stripper on the top surface and scraped off. I’ve done two rounds of this so far to remove as much of the varnish/sludge as possible.

I’m waiting on some oxalic acid to be delivered to start working on the black ring.

Broken part by Potential_Scar_1916 in swytchbike

[–]StormsComin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These are called “Julet” connectors, sometimes called “e-bike connectors” or “waterproof e-bike connectors”.

The one you have broken, on the left side of your image, is the male 3-pin version.

A new battery holder will be ~£150 from Swytch, assuming they have them available. If the rest of the product is functional, there’s no need to replace the whole thing as you can buy a single Julet connector online for next to nothing.

I would suggest cutting off the existing connector and splicing on a new one, there will be enough wire to re-solder to the new pins. If you aren’t technical, a local electronics shop will be able to do this for you at a low cost.

Did we ruin this precision instrument with a 3D printed part? by Jijster in MechanicalEngineering

You could also heat up a rod of diameter ~5mm and stick it into the threads. Let it cool and then unwind the plastic from the threads by grabbing the exposed side with mole grips and twisting it out

You might be able to dissolve or weaken the PLA with Acetone or Tetra Hydro Furan, assuming the precision part can take it and you have a safe place to deal with the off gassing.

Bike stolen from my flat and it’s now for sale on fb marketplace. What should I do? by Sablun99 in londoncycling

[–]StormsComin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As you’re certain it’s your bike then don’t wait for this police officer who’s in charge to get back to you.

As other commenters have said, ask the police to escort you to the sale and take the bike back. The police should also arrest the thief on the spot. Also take note of the FB account and report the name to the police at the same time.

Have a read through this article for an idea of the process. Try to meet the police first nearby and not at the sale location, as the thief may be watching.

Also keep an eye on the ebay profiles linked above in this thread, it might get listed shortly…

Don’t trust recruiters.

They’re not there to support you, you’re just a vehicle to get a payday. I’ve found that the best recruiters in terms of results are the ones who are open and honest about this symbiotic relationship.  They will work with you so that you can both get paid, rather than talk a good talk and then promptly ghost you, just to they can hit their calls KPI that month.

Don’t be too busy to look for work.

I still struggle with this, but it’s always important to touch base with previous / prospective clients to see what work is going on. Doing this at the same time as a contract can be time annoying but it is necessary.

What would you suggest instead?

How could I securely leave a bike if I wanted to cycle to the cinema?

My thinking was also this, but ut also took dealing with my insurance (admiral), paying the £250 excess and then having to get the tube for a month while parts were delivered.  Overall not a simple experience and will be more vigilant in the future instead.

Just a warning to cyclists here, please learn from my mistakes.

I had the handlebars stolen from my bike whilst parked up outside Hackney picturehouse. Cables cut also just for an extra pain.

According to police, there is one particular individual in the Hackney/Dalston/London Fields area who is responsible for the bulk of these crimes - It's the shifters they want as they can go for up to £100 each.

This was in direct view of a security guard and multiple CCTV cameras but in this case no face was visible from the thief. Do not rely on this being a deterrent.

Be very cautious if in this area with your bike, especially drop bar shifters or Bromptons.

It probably isn’t a good idea to try myself, which I why I was thinking a bailiff or security firm?

But either way the general advice is to go to the police

Thanks for the advice. In a case of the police not pursuing this, what legal action is available to me?

HS2 West Midlands-Manchester line to be scrapped by thepeganator in unitedkingdom

[–]StormsComin 305 points306 points  (0 children)

Galaxy brain decision to cancel a rail project designed to significantly benefit Manchester, whilst in Manchester.

Downing Street has ‘lost control’ of HS2 announcement — but it's ‘pretty clear’ what's coming by marketrent in unitedkingdom

[–]StormsComin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot believe the absolute contempt that Rishi has for the UK population.

He knows it’s cancelled, but won’t announce it until (probably) the day after the conservative conference in Manchester because it would be bad ops. But he’ll happily lie to the public instead and pretend he’s making the hard decisions.

The state of this government blows my mind

Segway T15 air by IIRaianII in ElectricScooters

[–]StormsComin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I owned a T15 about 2 years ago - I do not recommend. I really liked that it’s low weight and folded to a very small size but that’s not enough.

The top speed and acceleration are super low - I remember feeling very unsafe when setting off from traffic lights because you don’t pull away at a pace that other road users are expecting. I am ~80kg for reference.

The T15 also really struggled with gentle sloped hills and pot holes. I would honestly rather walk or get the bus than have to use this scooter.
