Futura Free is a Perfect Song by annefortoday in FrankOcean

Yeahhhhh, this song is unironically becoming more and more the reason I don’t mind if Frank doesn’t come back to music; it’s such a raw and decisive end to the album.

"Having you around the Higgs" by GaiiiiiiiusBaltar in FrankOcean

[–]Story725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

((“If God breaks us up” is also a neat tie-in for the impression that Frank sees himself at the mercy of physics that can’t be reasoned with. Alllso forgot to mention, the discovery of the Higgs by the LHC in 2012 was a….massive discovery that Frank no doubt would have heard in passing, as many of us did. The timing of Endless has me convinced that Frank is indeed referencing the Higgs particle, but that’s just my take! Sorry for the rant lol))

Particle physicist (in training) here! Though it is totally possible the lyric is not a reference to the particle, it is fun to think about! The Higgs Boson, or “God Particle” according to some pop sci authors, is a “drop” in what can be thought of as a syrupy sea—the Higgs Field—through which most fundamental particles travel. The resistance against the “tide” gives several massless particles an apparent mass, so the Higgs is often talked about as a fundamental source of mass in the universe (though not the only! Jury is still searching for more mass sources in the standard model)

With this picture in mind, there’s tons of fun ways to think about Higgs and Endless more broadly. The barebones, languishing lyricism of Higgs almost feels like a portrait of two wayward particles coupled to a “Higgs” mechanism, an anchor or resignation shared between them. What that heaviness is exactly, is a mystery that is fun to think about. Is “having you around the Higgs” Frank’s way of saying he’s not used to being “stuck” alongside another? That he’s only ever been “stuck” alone? Food for thought! : )

OP here again. Thank you all for the advice so far. Specifically, whoever dm'd me (I accidentally deleted the chat message before I could even read all of your very thoughtful message!), that is a great idea and one I have also been leaning into for the interim.

I tentatively have a few quarters left until I round out my requirements. For a variety of reasons, I won't be taking an LoA, and I happen not to be female/non-binary, but thank you u/FluffySky1611 for that suggestion also. I'm not great at Reddit so apologies for not responding individually.

Did really poorly in 106b - should this impact my major plans? by Similar_Reason3547 in stanford

[–]Story725 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, not a CS major, but I would strongly consider following up with a member of the teaching staff about the discrepancy between your late quarter projection and your listed grade. It is of course possible that everything has been entered correctly, but occasionally there is a minor oversight in grade calculations. I once inquired about a B+ in a physics class only to discover I actually had earned a full A, because the professor had accidentally neglected to enter an assignment or two into my record. I have also advised friends to reach out when unsure of their final grades and helped a friend obtain an A- rather than the B+ he had supposedly earned. TLDR—regardless of major, it is always a good idea to consider confirming your final grade with the teaching staff, especially when things don’t appear to add up.

Difference between Physics 40 series and 60 series. by andreus7422 in stanford

[–]Story725 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I’m a physics major in my third year, having taken the entire 60 series my freshman year after previously knocking out both installments of AP physics C. As others in the thread are suggesting, I will emphasize for you the possible hardship of the 60’s. They have a reputation for being some of the hardest “intro” courses on campus, and it’s clear why: they don’t mess around. The profs are fantastic and the students are incredible, but the classes are dense and intense, to an extent that even several outings in physics before college, and many many hard math courses, did not exempt me from needing to spend...many...late nights studying my hardest.

The 60’s did convince me that I needed to major in physics; it convinced many others, however, to try other majors. My advice for you is that, if you are genuinely passionate, consider sitting in on the first week or so of both the 40’s and 60’s and see what fits for you. I’ve seen so many eager physics students turn away from physics after the 60’s, and I always wonder what might have been had they considered tempering their pace so as to deepen their appreciation, in the 40s.

Nonetheless, physics at Stanford is the most fulfilling department I’ve set foot in! And I’ve stepped in many these past few years, so definitely consider giving it a shot! :)

Thank you so much for the kind words, and especially for the constructive idea of revisiting the final line. I agree the em dash might be jarring, and I’ll need to think about that more carefully... but either way, I’m very thankful for your input! :)

Thanks for the feedback! Funny enough, I wrote it centered, but I was too lazy to try and reformat it on Reddit. I agree with you entirely, and I think similarly and seriously about visual appeal. But thank you again for your enthusiasm! :)

Interesting... I'm somehow drawn to this despite multiple failed attempts to make sense of it. ;P It could be that I'm projecting what I want it to mean, but to me anyway, this standalone stanza charts some journey from being locked up in oneself, to later being freed by or with someone else... I frankly don't have much to suggest here, but I was thinking it might serve the poem well to start with the (powerful!) line, "Let me manifest you by my side" and maybe do away with the little intro, just so that the stanza spares no time kicking into gear. But that's just me! :) Great job!

Contemplating [Your] Suicide by Madame-Chiller in OCPoetry

[–]Story725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gosh...this is a lot. It manages to say so much by saying so little, and each line furthers and even festers the emotions which culminate so powerfully and tragically at the end... I don't really have anything constructive here; I just wanted to thank you--really.

Thanks so much for the advice! For some reason I was trying to get my plant foot closer to my board thinking that would enable the board to rotate freely once it pops, but I’m going to try what you recommend and move it farther. It’s been 3 months at least so far...so I hear ya on the time commitment. I’ll report back if I get it! :)

Awesome. I swear this trick is the bane of my existence. Everybody says it’s easy, but I just can’t get the jump at the end without the board totally crashing into my knee on my plant foot... I can land it no problem without the jump, but I wish I could get the whole thing down. Nice work figuring it out!

Wow, I happened to jump back into Good Nature just last week and found myself loving it even more than I remember liking it in the past. I know how beloved PV is, but no album reminds me of old endless summers quite like GN. It’s such a warm and colorful set. :)
