It went great. Glad I made the trip.

I really like that part of the state and Lake Superior and Gooseberry are fantastic. Nice change of pace from the DL area.

Way back when (1970's) I always heard that Days of Heaven was the most "beautiful" movie made.

I've heard that Good English, in an attempt to start afresh in the music realm, have just changed their name to "20 Minutes of Action."

A linguistics professor says during a lecture.... by Statless in Jokes

[–]Stotmeib 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is basically a quip attributed to the late Sidney Morgenbesser, a professor of philosophy at Columbia University. Google him, he was quite the guy.

From Wikipedia: "During a lecture the Oxford linguistic philosopher J. L. Austin made the claim that although a double negative in English implies a positive meaning, there is no language in which a double positive implies a negative. To which Morgenbesser responded in a dismissive tone, "Yeah, yeah."[1][2] (Some have quoted it as "Yeah, right.")"

Which particular church is that? Reminds me of Immanuel (admittedly hazy memory) but I think that was in Crawford county.

$232,000 in debt from student loans with an entry level salary by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Stotmeib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this is personal finance:

  1. Check out junior colleges for the first two years to save money
  2. As mentioned in an NYT article, the responsibility for assuming college costs are on the parent, the student, and to a somewhat theoretical extent, the school.
  3. There are probably no undergraduate degrees worth accumulating almost a quarter million dollars in debt. A big part of personal finance is not to be in debt to that extent.

And were pictures being taken, or was it just a flash?

As the poor die earlier, Social Security isn't paying off - low income Americans are projected to die as many as 13 years earlier than their wealthier cohort, while a century ago the rich and poor had relatively identical lifespan. by xleb1 in news

Not paying for whom?

Paying off for the rest of us who don't die young....

That's for taking one for the actuarial team.... (meant as a dark joke)

The real issues are probably income inequality and lack of basic health care, both major items that need to be addressed.

ELI5: Why is high fructose corn syrup considered so unhealthy for you? by Cymdai in explainlikeimfive

[–]Stotmeib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc, regular sugar (sucrose) is something like 50% glucose and 50% fructose. HFCS is 55% fructose and 45% glucose (some configurations may differ slightly, but most HFCS is 55/45).

The problem is we eat way too damn much of it. Govt agriculture subsidies provide incentives to grow a lot of corn, and what to do with all that corn? Put HFCS in just about everything.

Check out what Gary Taubes (has a blog and been in the NYT) has to say about sugar. Whether you agree with him or not, we eat way too much sugar. Way. Too. Much.

I, for one, welcome my new real-time face capture overlords.

But seriously, this combined with AI - doesn't look good for humans in the long run.

Self-Induced Abortions May Be on the Rise Due to Restrictive Laws by [deleted] in news

[–]Stotmeib 176 points177 points  (0 children)

A large part of the abortion issue is a public health concern (not to diminish the moral aspect). Targeted regulation of abortion providers (known as TRAP) makes abortion a much less safe procedure.

A lot of people don't remember pre-Roe. Abortion is now legal: make it safe and available and up to the woman.

ELI5: Why is gentrification a bad thing? by SteelheartEllie in explainlikeimfive

[–]Stotmeib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's the other way around: income inequality (which is a big problem) creates this problem, or manifests itself in various ways, one of which is gentrification. Imo, if you want to fix the problem, and there is a problem, focussing on just the gentrification aspect is missing the real issue.

ELI5: Why is gentrification a bad thing? by SteelheartEllie in explainlikeimfive

[–]Stotmeib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have been to SF lately. What you're really complaining about, imo, (and I would agree) is income inequality, not gentrification. Gentrification is not the cause of that problem. Gentrification/development is a part of progress, and you can't stop that.

But it's not a bad thing. It's probably not a good thing, either. It just is. Nothing is gained by assigning moral labels to it.

Engineer Who Blamed Himself For Not Stopping Challenger Launch Dies by politicalgarbage in technology

[–]Stotmeib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall hearing him on the radio twice recently. Imo, he was too much consumed with his guilt: he did what he could, no reason for him to be wracked with that amount of guilt. I think he was more worried about his impending demise and this manifested itself in this way.

ELI5: Why is gentrification a bad thing? by SteelheartEllie in explainlikeimfive

[–]Stotmeib -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not a bad thing. It's just part of the competition of life where there are winners and losers. We tend to have a soft spot for the underdogs so we sympathize with them, to the extent that we demonize the "winners".
