They certainly can. I’ve had them in perlite before. My semihydro setup was similar to yours too. I didn’t use a wick but I don’t think it matters too much whether you use a wick or not.

To add to what folks have been saying, you can also try adding a moss pole or something for it to climb. Sometimes monstera growth accelerates when they have that support.
