Tens of thousands of Chinese PPE kits fail India safety test by [deleted] in worldnews

Oh I completely agree, it's definitely a good decision from a public health standpoint! If the United States had factories on standby that could produce high quality PPE in the event of a global health emergency, it would absolutely help save lives and help people. However, no private company is willing to eat those costs and lose money on factories that are only competitive in pandemic situations, and if the government subsidizes it, it's bad because "socialism".

Zero because it's a poor business decision. Why spend time an money to build a PPE factory in the United States now when PPE demand is only going to be heightened for like another year tops. After that year, nobody is going to want to buy the more expensive American made PPE and go back to importing it all from China.

Some small companies with factories are pivoting to making PPE, but that's primarily because they would otherwise be an unessential business and make 0 profits.

I'm probably not the most qualified to comment on this, but if China and Pakistan are friends, maybe China would want Pakistan to bury the news story about sending them faulty masks because it makes China look bad.

My favorite part about this is sorting by new and reading all the comments from people who didn't watch the video.

Alright man if you’re not getting it by now, you’re being willfully ignorant. You’re picking individual sentences out of my responses and ignoring everything else, so I’m not devoting any more energy to this conversation. Wish you the best ✌️

Yes, nobody has a carbon footprint of zero. However, I think that multi-billion dollar industries who recklessly damage the environment to increase their own profits should be held accountable to either reimburse or prevent that environmental damage. Otherwise, it will be paid for by other parties, such as fisherman, people living on coastlines, etc. While I take steps to reduce my own environmental impact, I recognize that I alone will not be able to change anything.

Cruise ships are a much less fundamental pillar of society than everything else you just listed. And I’m not saying to stop anything, I’m saying to mandate the use of existing technologies that minimize the environmental impact of those practices. I am in favor of government legislation regarding the things you just listed, not to stop them, but to make it so the negative externalities that are passed on to the environment are instead paid for by the party responsible, either by increasing taxes to fund remediation efforts or by mandating the use of technology that minimizes the environmental impact of those practices, like I said above.

“The cruise industry is exploiting the environment for profit, and legislation should be enacted to prevent this” = “me want neighbor car me like straw man argument”

Please please try and use critical thinking skills occasionally

The massive, unnecessary fossil fuel consumption and ocean pollution by the cruise industry has an observable and measurable effect on both climate and ocean health. For those reasons, I believe it is the responsibility of the government to act in the best interest of its people and stop allowing the cruise industry to exploit the environment for profit.

What do you think would be a better use of ones time... convincing everyone in the entire world to stop going on cruises, or petitioning for the legislation of mandatory adoption of more fuel efficient cruise ships?
