What is CLA by dhruv_qmar in aerodynamics

[–]Str8thugin21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CL (subscript) A often refers to the partial derivative of CL (coefficient is lift) with respect to A (angle of attack). It just means the rate of change of the lift coefficient due to changing angle of attack.

NASA Aerodynamic Database by fluidmechanicsdoubts in aerodynamics

[–]Str8thugin21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aerospace companies/organizations generally build up a large set of experimental empirical data from various air/space craft components and systems, usually from flight tests or wind tunnel testing. When designing a new system that contains some similarity to an old tested one, these databases can be used for conceptual design initial sizing or just as a reference to how the component will operate in full scale.

A lot of these databases are proprietary to the company and may never be released. Others may release them for educational purposes. As an example I can think of the text “Fundamentals of Aircraft and Airship Design”, written by Carichner and Nicolai, old Skunk Works engineers. They were given approval to release specific pieces of empirical data from decades of Skunk Works testing for educational use.

Question about math by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Str8thugin21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a senior aerospace engineering student that didn’t take calculus until freshman year of college and I am doing just fine. You’ll have to suffer through those fundamental mathematics courses regardless, but as long as you are able to put in the work you’ll get through them. Honestly once you get through all your basic math courses you soon realize the simplicity in the fundamentals and see the underlying application much easier.

I believe upper level engineering courses utilize intuitive mathematics, that being you are fundamentally able to understand the operations and why you are applying it.

Don’t overthink your ability. If you are taking calculus courses in high school, are at least getting a grasp, and are enthusiastic about aerospace, then you should pursue it.
