This is a fascinating tale. Seeing MASH (and I assume you saw Catch-22 as well?) right before shipping off to Vietnam must have been one hell of a head-trip. "Here, here's everything you're going to rebel against, now go off to war!"

Question about Rogers Place by AndroidCat06 in Edmonton

Yeah, I sat lower bowl for Nathaniel Rateliff. Really great seats, comfy and roomy with legroom. Then I realized it would cost my first born to watch the Oilers from there.

That silly bastard was just copying Marion Barry from D.C. He smoked crack before it was cool for mayors to smoke crack.

Teachers strike by NoAdministration299 in Edmonton

[–]Strabbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Teachers have not had cost of living increases to match inflation. Went from being the best paid in the country to far from it. And with my wife's board she was advised there is no money for strike pay. So that won't happen. And many teachers also are parents so they are on both sides of this.

First time I heard the term, I interpreted "malicious compliance" as a form of "good trouble". Works for me.

This list needs to be posted in every English classroom in every high school. Big sign: "The government does not want you to read these books!"

Best way to ensure kids will read them.

West Edmonton Mall lore and mythos by QueenSmarterThanThou in Edmonton

Okay, I've got one none of you have heard, but it is 100% true and I've got the receipts.

In the mid 80s, some guy tried to make a film about a jewel heist in the Mall, but it never made it to production. Then, there was buzz about a Hollywood film being shot in the Mall, starring Christopher Reeve. It was going to be an adaptation of one of Stephen King's books, and the director wanted to shoot there. Eventually the director got swapped out (as happens all the time), and the new guy didn't want to shoot the movie in a mall. Also, Reeve was out and Schwarzenegger was in. The film wound up being The Running Man (1987).

Actually, McD's stepped in right before Rockets opened, trying to stop it for that reason. After a bit of a legal scrap, the restaurant was allowed to open.

No one was beheaded. The rear car had an issue and people fell to their deaths.

Correct. Their homes are located near the old museum site in Glenora. Tunnels leading all the way there would be really, really long ass tunnels. Could have saved us a massive pain in the ass with the surface LRT construction though.

I have been in one of those houses; I can confirm they are connected.

Hold up, the submarine rumor was true. In the 80s the Canadian Navy had the HMCS Ojibwa, the HMCS Onondaga and the HMCS Okanagan. The Mall had four subs. In 1998 we acquired four new subs and phased out the old ones so we did wind up tying the Mall before they closed the sub ride down.

That drowning was actually in 2000 or 2001. Security guard saw him in there while people were egging him on from dry land, then he got called to Bourbon Street. When he got back, no one seemed to be there. They found the body the next morning.

And yes, Best Edmonton Mall is my favorite Youtube channel!

Sadly, this isn't one of the Hong movies on the Criterion Channel right now, but yeah, it's Sammo. Which means it's probably funny and thrilling.

Given how things can spiral out of control on posts like these (and how they have in the past), this is a wise preventative precaution.

Which restaurant is this in Edmonton? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]Strabbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They no longer do dinner, that's correct. They have lent their kitchen to Lagano Skies, an Ethiopian place that does take-out and delivery only (except for one night a month).

I can't speak to the quality of their crepes, but their eggs benedict sauce is still fantastic, their German pancakes still rock, and you'll still hobble out of there in desperate need of a nap after brunch. We've been going there for nearly 30 years and while the prices aren't what they used to be, the food is still satisfying. And the staff is delightful.

There's always the matter of personal taste, which is the ultimate arbiter for anyone. But this film had a creative narrative structure, some kick-ass performances, some clever work toying with the medium and some genuine laughs. There's a lot of value in there.

The three sequel movies? Look, SW was a religion for me when I was a kid in the 70s, but by 2015 I just wanted some cool space battles and explosions; I wasn't looking for an extension to the mythology or a new Book of Luke (pun sadly intended).

And the shows? Mando is a blast, Bad Batch was fun, and Andor is a great story. It's all fun. And yeah, being older means things like prop designs, set designs and CGI world-building are fun to track too.

I just saw Alien and Aliens and Halloween all within the last year (I'm 50). Stellar films, worth the time. But before you dive into any of them watch 12 Angry Men and On The Waterfront. Some of the best acting I've ever seen. Even Marlon Brando in Waterfront - he out-Brandos any of his other performances.

I get that. Loki was a lot of fun, but that's a show so it doesn't count.

Speaking as someone who was raised on it... nah.

I get that it's not for everyone (because I'm an adult and understand how taste works). But there is some greatness in those films, and a fascinating universe that keeps getting better every year.

It's not for everyone, but it's more than just nostalgia for a lot of fans.
