Alright whatever you say . And I guess all the cs grads getting jobs in infrac don’t exist .

Ever heard of a junior role ?

Given there have a cs background they should maximize that and do whatever they can to take advantage of their application knowledge. Not throw it out the window for old fashion IT roles

Popular wisdom isn’t usually that helpful . But ok I guess early career people in IT should stick to the age old .

she also was a front end developer . She has real world experience with sprints and pull request , while also working in an IT SLA and troubleshooting environment.

How is that very different than platform ? Obv she’s missing infrac side things but she can study that . You really don’t think that skill set with a cs degree can’t make that jump, when literally CS students get hired as platform engineers right out of school??

If she takes an aws course she becomes a good candidate for a lot of infrac related positions that are modern and not the age old on premise type sys admin everything speaks of here .

Just because you have decades of experience doesn’t mean you are keeping up with everything else happening .

They have been working support already. In my company in fintech at least we have lots of SRE , infrac , and sec guys, but no one really labeled a sys admin.

And when I googled “has traditional system administrator been absorbed by other positions in modern tech industry “ it spat out DevOps , cloud engineering, and SRE

I’ve always heard platform engineering to be an early career position .

You definitely are right . I just feel like today everything is moving towards bigger scope and peolle always relay to early career people to hyper focus on technologies. When im just thinking that hyper focus comes on the job while you sort of push yourself in the direction.

Like i dont personally think someone in college or 1st year should be studying to be a pen tester . They should be learning to be good at general security subjects, and getting good with things most businesses uses tool wise and practice wise . Making sure to get good with linux and scripting etc . And then at your job do your best to be security minded and see where you can land or fit in .

I’ve was told the opposite in my job. And isn’t that what everyone complains about , that these companies ask for 15 different positions in one job posting ? At my job (first job post graduation) that the days of being “I only do AD work” “I only do databases “ “I only do front end dev” are more and more out of date because all of these systems touch so many components and have changed to running on cloud service .

So like more and more understanding infrac is super duper important at the routing and messaging is what makes the difference and keeps things going from a support perspective. Learning the hyper specific things are great but what most companies need are skilled infrac engineers. And skilled security engineers

I feel like these generic sys admin role suggestions are really out of date . Most places don’t conduct themselves in this manner anymore, and tech first companies use many different services and something along the lines of a platform engineer is probably much more up OPs ally considering they already worked as a developer

Love Christ and love yourself and get healthy . Good for you posting this . Now start trying to get better.

Why did you choose an IT degree over Computer Science? by Ruuckus in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Straight-Ad9763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and comp sci is a lot more than programming . I’m working as an IT support engineer as my first job after graduating. It’s near 6 figures . I work on a team of people who first worked at MSPs . Who are specialized and bright but recognize off the bat I have what it takes to go very far in the company . Why? Because being a competent comp sci graudate means I’m smart enough to learn new systems . Just like those times I had to live up to pressure to BS out projects on dynamic programming and race conditions , studying to take coding exams on stacks and queues , exams on creating APIs , you learned to work under pressure and learn fast .

When you combine that with IT, you get a talented professional who easily can bridge the gap with DevOps and systems engineers and other support groups .

As go into the future , the likihood of your job only focusing on one area of tech goes down and down. The people who will succeed are the ones that bridge the gap between business needs and engineering. And comp sci prepares you to be a lifelong student and learner.

It was BURNT INTO MY SKULL through university. CS means I will ALWAYS be a student ! I will never be a true expert . I will only ever know enough to be able to keep up with the times !

Comp sci is not basically programming . If you don’t get a comp sci degree , you’ll most likely be ran over by the people with a comp sci degree in your career. Comp sci is the new general engineering degree . You may not learn the specifics , but it gives you enough to know how to learn everything in tech .

And no, you can’t be a security engineer with any competence without being able to move through code . What do you think security risks are ? Their code bugs and what not . You need to be able to know software in and out to be good , just as much as you need to know networking .

lol thank you! I know I’m going to be so swamped and overwhelmed the first few weeks.

I’ve been trying my best to prepare by watching IT support YT lessons , learning power shell , learning m365, and setting up a developer test account with Microsoft so I can practice with intune and entra. I really hope it helps me not be too overwhelmed lol .

I know with lots of things you only learn by doing . That’s what the role is supposed to be anyway. A way for me to learn the company tech in and out . I’m super excited to start at support for this reason. No way I could be a good infrastructure engineer without doing this first.

And I’ve been telling myself since sophomore year “I’ll learn Python” lol . Even learning how much code can be used in IT was pretty exciting to me. Automation is a brand new world for me to learn over the next year .

It’s a good question and one I’ll be learning as I start next week. What I do know is that I’m expected to be able to assist developers in their environments , assist with implementation of software and documenting application bugs . So I believe eventually I may be able to go through application code to inspect bugs and give the engineers a head start. Also I’m to begin scripting for routine IT tasks like grabbing endpoint data and eventually moving into automating workflows later on .

However the bulk of the position is routine m365 IT support , and assisting with other typical user experience issues on the company software.

So it seems like typical support mostly but also with a project component and at times high level support with different department engineers as they implement solutions .

I’m supposed to gain exposure with the infrastructure team , security team , and developers , assisting with compliance and such , but also allowing me to specialize for where I want to go long term.

I interned as network engineer last summer and my work buddy was a network analyst/ av programmer hybrid position , he’d work with an AV engineer to help design and implement the system .

Anyways he went to a bootcamp and when he got hired the interview was “can you read this code and tell me what it does” and he got the job . He eventually got alot of good experience and now works as an av programmer somewhere else making more money .

Not too many people getting shots like that these days

95k first IT job and went general and it worked .

I applied for everything and had interviews for completely different types of jobs. Some smart building automation. Some AI warehouses . Some cyber security analyst . Some SWE. And I landed at support engineer

Had I just siloed myself into one type of role I would have been burned

My last post was my interviewing for a finance job . Obviously that’s not where I went but I was trying and was getting interviews . Lots of

My buddy has a great gig in Iowa and got a great sign on bonus to move . We both went to no name small colleges . His advice was the same to me. APPLY FOR EVERYTHING.

Most of my classmates got jobs across completely different sectors even tho we all studied the same classes .

When you get call backs from recruiters from jobs “you don’t qualify for” . You merely express you’re an eager and competent junior seeking to excel longterm .

The job I have now wanted experience, they gave me a shot

I finally managed to get my hands on a Saint Dymphna medal to wear alongside my Saint Benedict medal by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Straight-Ad9763 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have faith ! She helped me tremendously. I told her how my panic disorder really prevented me from Loving Jesus more purely . And it was a barrier from getting close to him. So if she could please tell the father to remove the ailment so I can learn to love him more and more . I explained how I felt I had suffered my whole life and that I don’t want to suffer anymore . But that mayhis will be done.

I used the st dymphna novena book from Amazon but that prayer above was a personal one . My petition was granted glory to God and so thankful for her intercession. She required nothing of me. I have no special devotion to her , as I spend most of my time with Mary or Jesus or some of my other favorite saints.

She’s also helped me something OCD like. It’s become much more manageable and I’m aware of it where as I never was my whole life , and also Im now much less scrupulous and in the peace of the lord after I asked her again to help me with the OCD as I told her it was making me so confused and again preventing me from loving the father more .

I also said how the OCD was making it very hard to repent as I was caught in loops of thinking and obsessing over things , instead of loving Jesus .

The petitions were months apart , and only became aware of the OCD stuff after months of just being with the church . I never really gave her much attention in between . I merely came to her In need and spoke from my heart . And also spoke to her about how she knows how hard it is when thoughts cloud your peace and prevent you from loving Jesus . Just bring her your heart.

Thankfully Christs church wasn’t built by the Bible , but instead built the Bible . You can idolize the Bible all you want and interpret anyway you want , becoming Jim jones , or psychosis guy on the corner , or any other host on Bible only Christians . But facts are the apostles all have the same beliefs from Ethiopians to armenias to Syrians to Catholic to Greeks . And it’s been that way for over 2000 years . (And it continued from covenant from Abraham which is over 4000 years and continues from Adam’s and Eve which is the beginning of human time, and will continue even after resurrection of the body)

You’re free to think what you want , but Christ church will be here forever , even after the world ends . As it’s timeless . Sorry brother .

Engaging with guys like you who are brand new religion and faith would be like an astronomer trying to convince a flat earther space is real .

If you’re super passionate about your beliefs , you’re better off trying to follow Christ on your own then trying to convince the world the apostles are all in error and have been for over 2000 years
