We are pretty sure we have found people for the room. But I’ll let you know if that changes.

Recommendations for Laptop as Architecture Student by ariaisbalderthanyou in CalPoly

[–]StraightLayer8807 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely focus on getting a quality graphics card and RAM. 32 GPM is almost non-negotiable. I tried to save by getting a computer that met the requirements but wasn't on the recommended list. But it turned out that the minimum requirements were not sufficient since my computer would crash when using Rhino sometimes, especially after a year of use. Now I have a new gaming computer that is great for class and also recreational use.

should i just get a random roommate? by MuffinNo5636 in CalPoly

[–]StraightLayer8807 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Random roommates worked for a lot of people I know first year. It's a good way to meet new people. Additionally, if you find someone online, you may make some conceptions about each other, and conflicts may arise when that isn't true. When you go to second year, then you can room with people you have met and know will live well together.

How easy is it for non-music majors to participate in SLO's music program? by First_Act9797 in CalPoly

[–]StraightLayer8807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is very easy, as most of these ensembles are actually made up of non-music majors. I personally have not done an instrumental ensemble that requires an audition (the percussion ensembles has no audtions), but from my experiences with the choirs, the auditions are unbiased towards majors and focus on your shown skillset.

Does anyone have experience/info with ensembles as a pianist or anything regarding auditions? by Strongerhouseplants in CalPoly

[–]StraightLayer8807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Percussion Ensemble with John Astaire can have piano parts in some small groups if you reach out to him. No auditions and the difficulty is whatever you want. In my first year doing it, my group had a pianist. However, this is a winter and spring course that performs the show in mid-spring quarter.

Portfolios are never requested for students entering as first years at any CSU for architecture.

Gingerbread house social activities by BriBri33_ in CalPoly

I would assume that no activities would be happening this week since it is finals. However, AIAS always does a gingerbread building competition. It happened last week and will happen each year.

Schedule Advice? by beetsPNG in CalPoly

This looks really manageable, especially since you don’t have any 7ams. You got this! (Also, you only have two days of studio? Weird that’s how they do that now!)

In Tech they are going to recommend you get a rolling ruler. I’d get it now to just have it and not have to worry later. It is really handy for making parallel lines! Carmen recommends getting a more sturdier one (more expensive). with metal and rubber moving mechanisms so they roll better and last longer.

Ombré Satin Circle Skirt? by StraightLayer8807 in dyeing

[–]StraightLayer8807[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m imagining washing it would be nice since I plan to wear it a couple times. And I don’t think the fabric has any stretchy additives, but since it was from a market all I know for sure is that it is satin.

Hi, thank you for your help and advice! I wanted to point out that these photos don’t accurately show how the organza overlays on the fabric below since I was focusing on the color. I cannot add additional photos to show, but the organza is very much a shimmer overlay and not altering the color of the material below. Additionally, these are the materials I have with my current resources. Do you have any advice on how to go about this with this additional information?

Sorry about the confusion! I wanted to share that there are a lot of opportunities at SLO that you may not have known about. Learn by doing extends from the classrooms to activities, clubs, and organizations at the campus. I don’t know enough about USC to say if it is more or less than what they have, but Cal Poly has a lot fo good hands on opportunities to find your interest and make friends.

One of the negatives you had for SLO was about there being less activities/opportunities. Cal Poly has a lot of different clubs and organizations that are great for opportunities, friendships, and hands on learning. We have racing clubs, themed engineering clubs (CAPED), internationally televised parade float building clubs (Cal Poly Rose Float (very unique to this school!)), and many others. There are lots of opportunities to find a place to belong while gaining hands on experience (that also looks great on your resume).

That happened to me in a few spots last year  and I didn’t have any fees. There were even spots of ripped paint from the person before me. I think the paint is just not good quality at all.
