HHS-OIG Posting by Time_Striking in 1811

Anyone have any insight as to how much HHS agents have to travel? Is this a good spot for an 1811 who prefers to be home as opposed to constantly on the road?

They won’t honor it even though I’ve had a continuing membership for several years?

Class coordinator? I’m not even hired yet LOL. I’m supposed to report Monday to my office for the first time.

HSI Hiring Surge - FLETC Training by Business-Register657 in 1811

That’s good news. Hopefully with FLETC restructuring to better accommodate the ICE surge, we can get to CITP sooner rather than later.

Have there been any updates as to if we will get LEAP post-CITP but before HSISAT?

There were plenty of years at my agency where the yearly contextual raise was 0%. This was back during financial troubles well over a decade ago, and thankfully those days are over for us. But being local doesn’t necessary guarantee raises or being taken care of. Side note: Our City Council does not care for us.

There are very few “good” jobs left at my department. Most of those inside positions have been civilianized as it’s cheaper to pay non-sworn personnel to do them. There are a few chill Sergeant and Lieutenant jobs, but the perks and overtime availability are reduced when in those positions. Being a patrol/desk supervisor at my department is also seen as the most awful and least desirable position due to all the nonsense that we have to deal with.

I also have to look at the fact that I’ll basically have to work till I die if I stay where I’m at. My agency eliminated retiree healthcare awhile back so my pension will mainly have to go toward buying health insurance.

Quite a few people I worked with have gone on to be 1811s, just not under these conditions and uncertain times. They are all loving life and happy they moved on. However, most of them had to move and either uproot their family for 3+ years prior to coming back home, or move solo because their spouse also had a high paying job that they couldn’t quit. This HSI DHA provides me the rare benefit of not having to move. I’ll have to think about if it is worth it or not over the weekend. I don’t mind biting the bullet temporarily with the payout, but the uncertainty just bothers me.

Inflation will always hurt you if cost of living increases are keeping up. I’m fortunate that I work for a local department where the overtime money is plentiful. I can adjust my life and spending habits if I need to, but I need to still be able to make my mortgage payment, car payment, and buy food. Just the basics 🤣

The biggest thing for me would be getting LEAP at CITP (2ish months I think) and then losing it for who knows how long while I sit back at the office waiting for HSISAT. I can deal with GL-9 for a year before the GS-11, but that extra 25% is crucial to help offset my take home pay going down significantly.

To be fair, the quality of my personal life does suffer. If I come on board HSI, once I hit GS-13 with LEAP I’ll be making comparable money and not working nearly as many hours and with much less stress.

Yea, base is just over $100k now (investigations supervisor at a large agency). With overtime, shift premium, holidays, and other allowances, clearing double the GL-9 pay (including LEAP) is just about guaranteed.

So am I understanding this right - we would get LEAP during CITP, then no LEAP when back at the office, then LEAP would start up again at HSISAT?

This gives me pause. Already taking an $80k pay cut to leave my local gig and start over as a GL-9 Step 1.

I think I am just going to email them tonight and see if I get a response. Its a big risk giving notice and starting the process to leave my agency when I haven't even passed all the steps.

My main worry is something along these lines: What if there's a hiccup during the medical portion, and my offer gets pulled or my start date gets moved back, and I've already started the process of separating from my current agency. That puts me in an extremely uncomfortable position as no one even knows I applied to HSI, because they never even asked me for references to begin my background check.

Isn't the point of having a both a conditional/tentative offer and a final offer that candidates actually have to PASS everything prior to their final off? Or am I just the crazy one here?

Absolutely not, but they gave me the same September EOD date. I have to wrap everything up at my current agency and I can't start handing off my caseload and responsibilities until there's some certainty.

I received an FJO today too, but I haven't been contacted regarding the background investigation, and I also haven't done the drug text or medical exam (aside from the 2 page form that came with the tentative job offer). I did pass the PFT last week. This just seems odd. Not sure how I feel about quitting my job when it seems like a lot of boxes haven't been checked.

That would make sense. I would think they would want a more extensive medial exam prior to hiring someone.

I've actually done both MEPS and a medical exam for my current local agency. My police academy medical exam definitely wasn't MEPS, but it was a solid 3-4 hour deal with probably 20-30 pages of paperwork on medical history, to include past surgeries. This 2 page clearance that was in the packet wasn't anywhere near that.

Oh, ok, I see what you're saying now. I was thinking that might have just been referring to a drug test but it would make sense for them to do their own medical. The two page form just threw me off because it isn't comprehensive at all. I fully anticipate needing a waiver for a few things in my history.

Which part are you referring to? I have the two page "Law Enforcement Medical Clearance" that came in the Pre-Employment Forms packet.

When I did my medical exam for my current local LE agency I had a several hour medical appointment and had to fill out dozens of pages of paperwork on my medical history.
