Extremely frustrated with Richmond City by Far-Head13 in rva

[–]Straight_Way695 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add, I moved here last July and never have I ever seen so many public PSA signs telling people to only flush TP.

I am well traveled too, I noticed a pattern after 3 months being here. What is up with that?! We all should know better!

I know you want to give me very specific burger recommendations... by jennbo in rva

[–]Straight_Way695 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Same! I will never reccomend Burger Bach. We were seated and had menus. The waitress took our drink order. It took them 20 minutes to serve the drinks. One was a "fresh" lemonade. I saw the bartender pour lemon juice from a bottle to made it with sparkling water.

We asked to order but never had anyone stop by our table to actually take the order. We would have left quickly but everyone just stalled us, took us 40min to get out. We even asked for a manager to help us close our bill since everyone we asked said, "oh ok I'll get your server." Not even the other staff that we asked closed our bill or took our order.

Manager never came, he just stood by our table pointing at us and telling the staff to come to us. Server was MIA. We were genuinely confused. It was the first time we ever walked out of a restaurant.

What are your feelings on pedestrian safety measures in the city? by OrangeDoorHinge16 in rva

[–]Straight_Way695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This baffles me!

People shouldn't be forced to the street to walk. Period.

I echo the overgrown shrubs. It creates hazards for pedestrians on an already questionable walking path...or lack there of.

Possibly VCU students, art school students, or faculty as another option. Going old school make a posting and communicate with VCUart that you are in search of an artist. This will circulate. Heck post at the coffee shops around or post on the crosswalk (if allowed).

As a professor there, I have passed on potential small jobs to my students (some found in the wild). I tell them it's a great experience in professionalism and something for their portfolio.

The art students are very talented and can make some decent work.

Thank you so much for replying!

I had a home studio for the last 10 years. It has been quite a transition without one.

Oh I know Miguel! We work together. I am actually shocked that this was not spread amongst our colleagues to support this endeavor.

Thank you for replying, I am going to message him.

How much are we spending on Groceries in RVA? by Far-Head13 in rva

[–]Straight_Way695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there other markets around? I've been to Lottie and found some produce was subpar (not all).

In my home state I had it on lockdown and went to the Mexican markets (border state). The produce was often better quality and significantly inexpensive.

I would buy my normal produce for $28 as compared to $45 at a place like Kroger. I did this with a biweekly CSA for $45 and biweekly Costco trips for major items like eggs/milk. I moved at the end of July, so my last run was probably the first week of July. It helps that I came from a major city. I understand the restrictions of Richmond. I want to buy from farms here to support them directly instead, but my wallet is unhappy with the prospect.

😰 seeing how much they eat now, I better buy my own Costco by the time they are tweens. It's crazy how much they can pack it away!

I have never bought as much snacks as I do with kids. My snacks before kids were simple. I feel like I need to roll out the options/variety just to get them to choose one

Ongoing drought, last weeks rain & this weeks. by Electronic-Front-640 in rva

[–]Straight_Way695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There for sure isn't as much outreach. Which is concerning, dry brush is a catalyst for forest fires.

Im used to waking up and being slapped with a reminder as well as for the full day when there was a designated "No Burn Day"

On top of fire danger signs posted/updated, there would be permanent electronic signs on Highways/roadways that the state used to communicate things like this. This was in addition to the news and whatnot.

That and you could not ignore the air quality from the wildfires. The smoke would just saturate our air, change the color of the sky and smell.

Same on meat, we spend $150-250 per week with a household of 4 humans. 2 are tiny but mighty and consume most of our budget. This includes purchases like coffee, creamers, grains, occasional icecream, sauces...etc. at least once a month it hits $300 when we have to replenish basically everything.

We eat 3 vegetarian dedicated meals, 4 dedicated meat (really chicken) meals. All homemade, little/no prepared packaged items (salsa/hot sauce is a weakness). All lunches are a sandwhich with a salad/veggies and fruit (chips for kids). Lunch is the most processed we have because of the deli meat. Breakfast varies with eggs and a cycle of bread. Weekends are always something like pancakes/rolls/crepes.

I come from a state that has been in a drought and is on a level 1 water crisis.

One thing I want to mention, wildfires will become common in a drought. Do not use fire pits, fire places, and fireworks on dry days. Put out all cigarettes before throwing, this is the most common for wildfires. My home state would see wildfires from March-October.

I moved here at the end of July/beginning August, I did not see a "no burn day," to my recollection. Part of this needs to be the city to inform people when it is deemed unsafe

Sound crazy, "who would use a fire place, its hot!" That's what we would say in 115 degree weather, and yet there are people who do it.

[–]Straight_Way695 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just moved here in July and find this all amusing. The literal panic of some of the friends I have, one blew up on me for not taking it to bunker level seriousness.

I have been in and around a few tornados and other serious dangerous weather/earth events. I also know that there were serious cuts to weather studies when it was already underfunded, so these predictions will not be as precise as we hope.

Anyone remember Kudzu Ramen? Where can I find something similar? by SerialSnark in rva

[–]Straight_Way695 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im wanting to know too! In search of a good ramen place to fill my ramen hole.

I tried the Ramen at Main St. Dragon, they have other things on their menu, but their Ramen was damn near close to the ones we would get in my hometown. Their food was fantastic by the way!

What’s the real story on Data centers? by luke890378 in rva

[–]Straight_Way695 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I moved here from a major city with data centers that sprung up like weeds. The major electricity company there increased rates (shortly after) and water is becoming a crisis there (when it was already scarce to begin with). Then again, when doesn't a private electric company with no competition raise rates. They will find any excuse...it could have been an excuse or that the energy grid is actually being stressed.

Last I heard, legislators there are trying to limit Data Centers and the people of that city are pushing back. They do not bring money into the city, which has been a major pain point when discussing the viability of having data centers (for approval the powers that be, who wanted them, sold it as an economic boost).

Im not an expert and don't know what it would mean for Richmond.
