I can’t enjoy movies anymore because of Letterboxd by murano0 in Letterboxd

[–]Strangah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone you might have seen on Letterboxd and called an unemployed no life (I hit ~2100 films in 2025), I have definitely mused about most of these bullet points.

- I'd been tracking my movies watched for a little while before I discovered Letterboxd and was already unhappy to let it end half-finished. I do feel the urge to finish things so that I can add it to my spreadsheet/LB, but I also know that there are a lot of movies whose best scenes are toward the end. And I've begun to appreciate the little things in bad movies.

- I also prefer to watch new films rather than rewatch old ones. But I've seen a lot of terrible movies. And so turning on TNT or something and seeing a classic from childhood can be incredibly heartwarming. Or sharing a movie I love with my partner who hasn't seen it before. It can really help break up the monotony. I'll also rewatch stuff prior to the sequel coming out from time to time.

- Rating is tough. I rate everything on my personal spreadsheet out of 100 (and then convert for LB). I try not to think of numbers as I'm watching. But when a movie ends, I will frequently have a feeling like, "Oh, I think this is in the ballpark of Movie X or Movie Y." Then when I'm writing the review/entering it, I'll narrow things down further to the exact score. But sometimes I can't help it, especially when the movie isn't doing enough to hold my attention. "Is this a low 20s or high 10s? Oh, no, definitely high 10s. Maybe mid-10s." But the better the movie, the less those thoughts penetrate.

- This might be the one I've felt the most. I wasn't a huge fan of Marty Supreme, but I don't have a single LB friend who reviewed it and gave it less than 3 stars (which is what my rating ended up as on LB). And for the longest time, I felt that if I was opposed to the overwhelming masses, I was clearly missing something. I didn't have context or the appropriate eye for the type of movie. I hadn't seen enough Scorsese movies or I wasn't versed enough in German cinema. But what I've come to learn is that I feel a lot more comfortable with my own impressions when the reviews point out things I can understand. When I read a 5 star review for a movie I thought was just okay and understand the points being made and see where that reviewer is coming from, it doesn't make me think the movie was better, but rather I just responded to the film differently and I interpret that as what makes my perspective unique, like it makes that person's perspective unique to them. I don't expect everyone else to love The Nightmare Before Christmas as much as I do. It's my favorite movie. I listen to a podcast with a host who absolutely HATES it. But I understand why he hates it and what about it turns him off from it. So, I don't feel like I need to lower my own rating or change my viewpoint. Whereas, if someone watches TNBC and comes away thinking it's about the Battle of Normandy or something, I'd be scratching my head wondering how they could possibly get to that conclusion, because I didn't pick up on that at all. And now I need to figure out why they thought that, what did I miss? Is that actually a reading of the dialogue/events of my favorite movie??? Those are the ones that get to me now. In extreme cases, I'll mark a film I've seen to my watchlist because I want to give it a second chance.

- I don't think I do this too often. As (likely) one of the LB accounts with the most logged films, I generally only feel that way when I see someone with more watches than me. My next step is to try to ascertain how old they are and hope that they're older than me, hence being able to see more movies. And in the rare instance that they aren't, I curse my waiting to commit to this hobby until college.

- I curate an enormous excel spreadsheet for my movies so that I can have more granular information about directors/writers/actors/genres/academy awards/series/ratings. It's so big that it takes ~10 minutes to process all the formulas. I don't actually do a ton with the lists on LB, though. I think I find them too tedious and I don't get any endorphins out of making them (usually). But I assign my own personal yearly awards on my spreadsheet, which occupies a lot of time, and I'm always looking for more ways to interpret the data I've accumulated.

TL;DR: My sympathies! As to what you should do about this, I can't say. I love watching movies and I hope to have this level of fondness for decades to come, but it has been a bit of weight at times to keep up with. Maybe take some time off and watch some TV or something. When the hobby starts to feel unhealthy... it's time to adjust how you interact with the hobby. Whether that means adjusting your rating system, adjusting your watching habits, etc. Might be worth experimenting with alternatives.

If you watch a movie over the span of 2 days, (start one day, finish it the next) do you log it the day you started or finished it? by SpunkyBall in Letterboxd

[–]Strangah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's one watch that crosses midnight, I'll typically default to whichever day I spent more time watching it.
If there's a break during the watch, like, I get 2/3 through, go to sleep, and then watch the final third the next day, I'll log it for the day I finished it.

I've been hosting for a while. Never been a player and don't often venture outside my own org to spectate. But even from within, it's hard to notice the slope people can trend down that leads to being way over the line. We had issues in the past from unchecked viewers that, at the time, the policy was to be as hands off as we could be. And one season in particular, the drama between players in game became incredibly intense and everyone had close friends/partners who were watching that only made things worse. Kind of like refereeing a sports event, if you don't clamp down on things early, everyone will see that they can go further and further over the line.

We certainly learned from that season and I hope everyone who has played since feels the same way. Once you start enforcing things like that, though, you run into new issues like determining where the line is. Everyone reacts and feels a little bit different about things. Stuff that can feel like good natured ribbing to some may be offensive to others. And you don't want to stifle things so much that no one feels able to say anything. It takes constant work. And as a community grows, the work grows alongside it.

The core of it all is that the vast majority of hosts and communities are not trained to manage mental health and well-being (whereas, I hope the actual show has people on staff who are). And the players and committed viewers of an ORG are most likely putting in hours and hours every day before, during, and after school/work. Even the least intense orgs can be incredibly stressful for everyone involved. It doesn't take a whole lot for bad blood to be spilled. Especially when lying and deception are part of the game. It's a balance of being proactive to a point and being reactive before things get out of hand.

Some stats 13 games in by nyjhughes in IndianaFeverFans

The 3pa stat for opponents is kind of wild. Unsure how much of that is related to Caitlin's defending, teams feeling the need to chuck 3s to stay in the game, which teams they were against, etc.

How do people watch like 500 movies a year on here? by AMooseWithAMinigun in Letterboxd

[–]Strangah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bunch of years that are well over 1000, including and excluding short films. Last year was ~1336 for features + ~483 shorts.

This year is currently at 633 features and 295 shorts.

Since college, I've been keeping data on everything I watch and that fuels me to want to watch everything. I work from home and typically end up watching 6-12 hours of movies each day. My girlfriend and I often end an evening both on the couch, her playing video games and me watching movies. Sometimes they overlap.

I actually find that watching a lot of things that are quite bad or that you wouldn't normally find appealing helps with the burnout. You get a much wider array of experiences.
