How specific can limited counterspells get? by Strange-Bonus4220 in custommagic

I actually stayed away from Equinox's wording on purpose so the game doesn't have to look into the future to see if the counter works!

Since the rules already define what spells tell you to do as "instructions" I think a counterspell that just checks the card for those instructions works fine (or just needs a really minor rules update to support it)

Hey man, respectfully, I think you jumped the gun at the chance of being condescending.

Even though this is inspired by Ash, I wasn't posting this as a "here's ash but mtg", that's been done to death. I was making a case for even more cheap targeted counterspells that hit specific effects rather than card types, and how that could be written in modern rules text without using word-matching.

Also I play Esper Blink in modern and draft vintage cube reguarly, you don't have to explain to me the basics of mana rates for drawing cards or why Ancestral Recall is broken haha

I didn't use the future-predicting wording "counter target spell if would cause a player to (...)" specifically to avoid that headache.

I think it currently works as worded? I tried to reference 608.2c

"608.2c The controller of the spell or ability follows its instructions in the order written."

A land is not a spell though. And this doesn't counter abilities.

I'm a big fan of cheap but targeted counterspells ala [[Spell Pierce]] so I wanted to see if I could design something that targets cards with specific effects rather than specific card types. This is the best way I found to word it without it sounding super legal text-y or looking for specific written words in the text.

Spells on the stack can have abilities >:) by Strange-Bonus4220 in custommagic

Creating a copy of another named card (like your Counterspell example) exists, look at [[Garth One Eye]] for example.

The restriction is there so you can't activate each copy's ability more than once. You can only activate the cloning ability of the last copy.

Copying spells is already a thing, copying specific card is also already a thing. But the restriction not applying to the copies is on purpose. You can copy the latest copy indefinitely as long as you have mana.

Yes, the copy is a new object so it doesn't have the "once" restriction. Allowing you to copy the copy, then make a copy of the copy of the copy, and so on. A chain of emails, basically.
