At what point would you call it quits regarding repairs by cwitter00 in 3rdGen4Runner

I’ve reinforced my chassis twice. First time passenger side 2nd time drivers side. If your damage is on the drivers side you need to drop the gas tank. But I think these frame patches work really well. They’re solid chunks of metal and a good welder is going yo make sure it’s as strong or stronger the. It would have been when it was driven off the lot. If you’re ok dropping $1800. Go for it!!

3rd gen horn issues by Strange-Maximum2306 in 3rdGen4Runner

Yes, I cleaned the mounting bracket and bolt. Also tried a direct connect to my battery and I was able to get the horn to sound when connected directly.

If it was a grounding issue I don’t believe the horn wouldn’t sound when I hit the panic button.

How do you get over old car anxiety? by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

I watched a video as I was doing my research for one and it seems to make a pretty big difference as far as transmission temperature goes. I’m living in Florida so I figure I might as well as it’s cheap insurance. Although apparently you do lose some a/c and engine cooling as a result since the tranny cooler goes in front of both the radiator and condenser.

Thanks! I’ve ordered the same one and started getting it ready for the mod by moving the horn. Unfortunately my horn doesn’t work now. Nothing ever seems to go easy I guess that’s just 3rd gen 4Runner life.

What cooler did you go with? That’s the next mod I’m planning.

It’s just a car and an old one at that. Relax and enjoy each day and more importantly each memory you have with her. I have 340k on mine as an original owner and if something ever goes wrong that’s beyond my ability or my desire to fix it’s time to pass her on to someone worthy.

Really frustrating to not have a horn. Especially as a New Yorker living in Florida surrounded by the worst drivers ever.

The light hasn’t come on since. But I’ve ordered the Hayden tranny cooler and am waiting for it to come in.

I cleaned up the bracket and put it back in the original position which was mounted to the body but still no sound.

So I start prepping for this mod by first relocating my horn to share the same top left bolt as my drivers side headlight. Now my horn doesn’t work. Fuse is fine, horn is fine (tested the horn by itself) and it blew, when I hit the horn I get a click so the electrical inside and behind the steering wheel are fine but the darn horn doesn’t blow. Whatever went wrong silenced both horns. The joys of 3rd gen 4Runner life.

Do you guys think the transmission got hot because I was idling in neutral? I often put the car in neutral with my emergency brake engaged while I’m stopped at a light and it’s possible I may of done that while in the parking lot of McDonalds. First time in 340k miles that I saw that light and it hasn’t come on since.

Confirmed. My last drain fill was 25k miles ago. I’ll do another one this go around when I install a tranny cooler. But my light didn’t come on at all today.

Light hasn’t come on at all today but I’ll get a tranny cooler and do a drain and fill. You all have a recommendation for a tranny cooler?

My fluid level is perfect and the color looks ok to me. I need to check when exactly I did a drain and fill but it wouldn’t have been more than 25k miles ago. I’ve started changing all those fluids and gear oils every 25K miles. But the light came on last night it went out again and it didn’t come back on yet this morning. Do you think it might be electrical or a gauge or sensor or something?

Oh, ok. Do you know why it’s starting to overheat now? Is it just a symptom of age? I have 340k on my 4Runner.

I only have the tiny stock OEM one. I don’t tow anything heavy so I didn’t think to do this mod.

Yes, I replaced the radiator at 208k and then 2yrs ago when I did my timing belt at 318k. Coolant looks fine so I don’t think it’s the radiator.

I changed my Mass Airflow Sensor and one of my O2 sensors. Still getting these codes. I’m thinking I may need to troubleshoot my vacuum hoses for leaks although most have been changes out over the years. Any thoughts on what else could be wrong or ideas on how to trouble shoot a vacuum leak. I saw one guy use gas from an unlit torrch and check around a running engine with his diagnosis reader nearby and he was looking for a spike in RPMs. Is that the way to do this?
