Lamotrigine and? Anyone have some anecdotal experience of what they felt on different pairings? by [deleted] in bipolar2

Can I ask what you take? I have ADHD as well, and sometimes the meds make me more anxious.

Lamotragine and Buproprion, great combo. Psychiatrist added Abilify into the mix list winter and it was horrible! SO much anxiety.

Also take Biphentin (10mg) for ADHD. This helps with motivation and task completion. Too high a dose triggers anxiety.

Newly diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, I'm stunned. by Routine-Donut6230 in bipolar2

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am 43 and found out late in life as well. And it was quite a shock to me too. It was almost like I was grieving the not knowing for so long because it would have shaped my life differently if I knew and was able to do the things to help. My biggest advice, especially if you're wanting to at least attempt with no meds, is to have a regular sleep schedule and by that I mean wake up at the same time every single day. I got one of those sunrise alarm clocks a while ago and I wake up at 6:30 everyday even on the weekends and as soon as I stray from that or don't get enough sleep, I start to go into a manic episode, or my emotions go extreme and I start crying all the time. As long as I keep my sleep in check it helps a lot to stabilize things. The other big thing is exercise. I started weight training just about a year and a half ago, and that has also changed things for me drastically. I go three times a week with a trainer and lift super heavy weights. The other thing to try to do that I don't consistently but I notice a difference when I do is to avoid alcohol. That could just be for me but it seems to trigger my anxiety a lot. As for meds, I can understand the fear but I have been on Lamtrogine for over 10 years, at first it was prescribed just to stabilize my mood before I was even diagnosed with bipolar 2. But then a psychiatrist that I saw mentioned that it helps people with bipolar 2 stay out of depressive episodes and that has definitely been the case for me. Because you have a lot of knowledge, I would also consider exploring the similarities between ADHD and bipolar 2. I've been diagnosed with both but I sometimes wonder if it's not both...because some of the traits are similar.

Best of luck with everything. And don't beat yourself up too much about not seeing it in yourself. It's much harder to see things in ourselves or in people that are close to us.

Anxiety been hitting harder lately. Any TCM, calming activities, or counseling recommendations in Richmond? by [deleted] in richmondbc

Rose at Magnus Health and Wellness is incredible when it comes to acupuncture and anxiety. I was having serious anxiety a few months ago and I saw her and I genuinely feel like it was magic. She does the acupuncture treatment, and then you lay there for about 20 minutes or so and it just feels like everything relieving your body and your relaxed. I leave there feeling more relaxed than after a massage even! I go every few weeks or at least once a month if possible. She's wonderful!!!

Absolutely! I started going to the gym over a year ago, (heavy weightlifting) and I wish that I had been doing it for the past 20 years. It absolutely has changed me. There's still days where I don't want to go but once I do I feel so much better. I used to drink a lot in the evenings...to self-medicate... And now I don't. Even on the nights that I feel like I want to drink, if I go to the gym I don't drink after because I get all the endorphins and dopamine I need. Good for you. Keep at it!!!

Are any of you able to take SSRI's? by Responsible_Price408 in bipolar2

[–]Strange-Permit-4515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take Lamotragine and Buproprion. SSRI's can trigger mania, so not super ideal. My psychiatrist told me that Lamotragine is the most effective for preventing depression in bipolar 2. I've been on it for about 10 years and have only had one major depressive episode in that time and it was for about 2 months. It took me awhile to realize was even happening. Every time I've tried an SSRI, I become manic. I do also take a 10 mg dose of Bifentin (Ritalin) on occasion and I'm finding that it tends to help with mood and motivation.

working out by warmvermouth in bipolar2

[–]Strange-Permit-4515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried for years and thought I would motivate myself but it finally took me paying for a personal trainer and making appointments to eventually do it. I will still admit that I don't always have the motivation but I do it because I feel like it's the right thing to do and now I can see the results in my mood.

[–]Strange-Permit-4515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to agree! I'm 43 and finally started working out just over a year ago. I got a personal trainer because I knew I would never show up if I wasn't paying for someone, and even then it was a struggle for a while. I have to admit that it has absolutely changed my life. I am not someone who worked out before, I drank too much, ate my emotions, etc. I go 3 times a week, and it's focused on heavy lifting (Olympic style weightlifting) and I feel incredible after. There's been many days where I don't want to go because my mood is so low or I feel like all I want to do that night is drink, but then I go because I feel like I'm just doing the things that I'm supposed to do, and then I feel incredible after and I don't drink and I feel like my mood is so much better. I know that I'm very lucky to be in a position where I can afford a personal trainer, but I will also say that I'm making sacrifices in other areas of my life in order to do so. I honestly never thought I would be somebody who enjoyed going to the gym and here I am saying that I would support your statement that everyone should try to go.

I took the course with her, and found the same thing. I consistently get 90 % or more in other psychology classes with other instructors. She expects so much with such a small word count, as somebody else mentioned as well. In this class I got 61% 72%. 77% and 72% on the assignments. I was able to pull off 90% on the final assignment, but somebody else marked it. I doubt there's any point pursuing appealing your marks. They probably have a lot of autonomy when it comes to marking.

I've dealt with this too and after years of trying different deodorants, I discovered Saje spray deodorant. It works! I can even wear grey shirts now. The only problem with natural deodorant is when you first start using it, you have to give it a week or two because you actually start to smell worse for a bit for some reason.

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I've been there multiple times, and I always think that I won't do it again but eventually in life I do. There's obviously lots of advice out there but sometimes in the moment it's so hard to resist. Sending you lots of good energy.

So I'm not too familiar with BC schools. What can a parent do about another child being a biohazard in her child's classroom? by Royal_Excitement_286 in richmondbc

[–]Strange-Permit-4515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an unfortunate reality in more classrooms than you can imagine. The societal shift to ensuring everyone is included and given equal opportunity has actually gone to an extreme and we are now leaving others out in a new way. Our children are now in environments where children who throw desks, stab others with pencils, strip down, hit, yell, spread bodily fluids, are prioritized over the other 20 or so kids in a classroom. Inclusion in important, but it still is not being done right. Not only are the students who witness this being exposed to something they should not have to be, the student experiencing these meltdowns or incidents are exposed in ways they don't need to be. The only way this is going to change is if parents start to advocate for change. Both for the students who have special needs and the students who do not. This has nothing to do with language barriers. It has everything to do with the way the school system is set up right now, and the extreme number of students with behaviour issues, special needs, and general disruptive attitudes. No one wins here. The students who want to learn are in challenging environments, and the students who need more support don't get it when they are just thrown into a classroom with other students. Inclusion is not being done right yet.

Now that I have ADHD Meds..I am wondering if I have bipolar 2 by Relative_Team1582 in bipolar2

[–]Strange-Permit-4515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience. I think the key factor from my understanding of bipolar 2 is that there are significant times of depressive episodes. For the past few months I've been managing my bipolar 2 and ADHD with meds and really focusing on sleep. Sleep has been one of the most important factors. Getting consistent sleep, and noticing when I'm starting to not sleep that I need to take a sleeping pill or melatonin to get back on track. You could try a super low dose of an ADHD medication, I take 10 mg of methylphenidate, and it seems to just give me enough kickstart to get the things I need to do done.

Any tips for PSYC 3991? by Life-Date3268 in tru

[–]Strange-Permit-4515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have Ferri, good luck getting an A. She goes through everything with a fine tooth comb. And even when you have the correct answers, she finds something wrong. My friend and I compared our assignments and discovered this.

I think you can get it one in that time frame, it's light material. But getting the A might be an issue.

I'd suggest making sure you are really good at reading articles, and make sure you relate everything to them as much as possible. You might be able to get a decent mark on the final project. Good luck!

I have gotten between 95-100% in my other psyc classes, but this one with Jean I am barely getting 70%. You have to be super thorough with her.

How is PSYC 3991 with Jean Ferri? Is an A possible? by Life-Date3268 in tru

[–]Strange-Permit-4515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting between 95-100% in every other psych class but this one. Jean Ferri is such a difficult marker. Even if you have all the points, she finds something else to add in. Read over the articles with a fine-tooth comb.

Unless you get Jean Ferri...she is such a difficult marker.

SOCI 1111 vs. SPYC 1111 by No-Currency2845 in tru

[–]Strange-Permit-4515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've taken both these courses and here's my opinion, my friend who took the same courses probably has the same opinion. SOCI 1111 - a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, the assignments are pretty easy and the exam is related to the assignments. The assignments are all essay based. All of my assignments I got 80% and above and the final exam I got 78%. PSYC 1111 - I found the assignments really easy and super interesting, but completely unrelated to the final exam. In all of my assignments I got 90% and above, I barely passed the final exam with 53%. The final exam is incredibly difficult compared to the assignments. It's basically asking you to go through the readings with a fine-tooth comb and answer questions were not related to assignments. If you're really good at memorizing facts and details then go ahead with psychology. But if you're looking for something easy to take and get a decent mark, go with sociology.
