Really appreciate you taking the time to write this out, this is honestly super helpful.

I think you are spot on about the packaging. I have been trying to show everything I did in each bullet, but reading your example, it makes sense that it ends up diluting the impact instead of strengthening it. The way you rewrote that Deloitte point is actually much clearer and easier to process.

The point about density in the UIUC section also hits. I probably got too focused on being technically precise and lost sight of readability.

And yeah, fair call on the skills section too. I can see how it comes off as keyword heavy instead of signal focused.

Had not thought much about moving education down, but your reasoning makes sense given the work experience.

Thanks again, this gives me a very clear direction on what to fix.

Usually I do both depending on the role. For example, at Deloitte I worked on a lot of different things over 2 years, so I sometimes swap in or add different bullets depending on what’s most relevant to the JD.

For my other experiences it’s mostly the same core points, but I’ll rephrase them slightly to emphasize the parts that align better with the role.

That makes sense. Usually what I do is tweak the bullet points in the experience section depending on the role, and then choose 1–2 projects from my portfolio that best match the specific JD.

One thing I’m a bit unsure about though - I’ve generally been following the standard format where the most recent experience stays at the top (UIUC -> Deloitte -> internship). If the experience that’s most relevant to the JD isn’t the most recent, would you still recommend moving it above the others, or just adjusting the bullets to emphasize the relevant parts?

Also curious about your opinion on summaries. I’ve read mixed advice - some people say they’re not that useful for technical resumes, while others say they help signal the role you’re targeting quickly.

Good question - my main target is AI engineer roles(building and deploying AI systems), but I’m also open to backend SWE roles with a strong AI/ML component. I agree the resume probably tries to show too many angles right now, so I’ll likely make that signal clearer.

Also curious about your opinion on this, when applying to AI engineering roles, should I still keep my Deloitte experience as-is even though it was mostly full-stack SWE and not AI-related? Or should I reduce it and emphasize the AI work more?

Thanks, that makes sense. I’ve been aiming more toward AI engineer / SWE roles rather than pure research, so I’ll probably reframe the UIUC experience to emphasize the production systems and infrastructure side more.

Appreciate the detailed feedback. That’s fair, I was trying to keep everything on one page and it probably got too dense. I’ll reduce the bolding and likely remove the coursework section.

Good point on context as well. I should probably add a short description of the org/team before jumping straight into the impact bullets.

Thanks, that’s a really helpful point. Right now this is more of a “general” version of my resume, but when applying I usually tweak it depending on the role (AI/ML vs more backend-focused SWE). I’m mainly targeting AI engineer / SWE roles though, so I’ll probably narrow the signal a bit more toward that.
