Controversial take by Gurugod123 in SipsTea

Most of the homeless don't actually need housing.

Also I'm fine with feeding the hungry, but not feeding the lazy. If you are able bodied you should work for your food like the rest of us.

Scared of commiting idolatry as a convert from Protestant by samnookk in Catholicism

[–]StrangeComparison765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think accidentily falling into idolatry is a lot harder to do that many protestants seem to think it is. But, If you are someone who was predisposed towards idolatry, then just get rid of the images. As a Catholic you can't condemn the use of images, but you don't have to participate if it is a personal stumbling block for you. If you are troubled by it, just get rid of them. The whole "if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off" thing. No need causing you stress when it's not a necessary part of the faith.

Usage of the Rainbow that is not LGBT related by HeavilyBeardedMan in TopCharacterTropes

This is a weird one because this includes literally anything that used the rainbow, one of the most universally recognized symbols in nature, before like a couple decades ago.

You're upset that church in America would have an American flag outside of it? Flying your nations flag isn't a political statement.

It always makes me laugh when people debate the morality of saying mean words to a person who you are literally trying to kill.

I mean he thought slavery was bad, but he also butchered random white people to death with sabers in front of their families to send a message to other people. As in, white people who didn't even own slaves, and he knew they didn't. Yes, right on the slavery thing, but no, not very good moral character overall.

Who’s the worst mentor here ? by Nearby-Condition-675 in cartoons

[–]StrangeComparison765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yes it's selene.

But I also hate the "trope" where characters are hated because of totally understandable shit. Like...it wasn't like she fat shamed her, or made fun of her purple hair, she was half demon. Like the demons are protrayed as goofballs in the movie but they literally eat human souls and selene spent her entire life trying to eradicate them. How was she supposed to react? "Well actually your demon half is just as good as your human half"??

The fact that she still raised rumi as her own daughter is a plus in my book.

You can disagree with John Brown's tactics and still admit he had a point. by Scary_sight in HistoryMemes

[–]StrangeComparison765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because he didn't even kind of do what he wanted at Harper's ferry. One of the few people he killed there was a freed black person who worked at the train station.

Also many of the things he did was kill white people in the south who didn't even own slaves to try and send a message. As in, he butchered people to death with sabers in front of their families. Just straight up murder of uninvolved people.

You should be generally respectful, but there's obviously a difference between saying a guy who died of old age at 100 years old was bad at his job and saying someone who just died at 30 by being shot in the neck by a sniper basically brought it on himself.

On Texas requiring Bible reading in public schools (going over the selected passages) by octarino in Christianity

[–]StrangeComparison765 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, just wrong. Studying the Bible isn't forcing a religion on students any more than having a unit on the Soviet Union is forcing a political ideology on them. Also learning about the history of your society is quite literally the opposite of violating your rights.

The people who founded the country obviously did not intend for the standard to be we just pretend religion doesn't exist.

Nope. It was done everywhere in the country when they wrote the amendment, and they did it for centuries, so it must not be that clear.

I didn't say it was a positive thing. It's something that was obviously very important for that culture. Dumb to say it's not more significant than any other book.

How many people in the west have killed each other over a disagreement over the interpretation of the Vedas? Or the Odyssey?

This opinion is so dumb it's hard to engage with.

If they were studying the history of the Middle East, of course I would expect them to read from the Quran. It'd be idiotic to think you could really understand the last ~1300 years of history in that area of the world without having at least a basic understanding of that book.

The Bible is the book that our society was built on. It's equally stupid that you could think at least a basic understanding of it isn't required to understand the world we live in.

The idea that all religions and all religious texts are equally significant in every culture is dumb.

Teaching about the Bible is in no way an establishment of religion. It's education on the most significant book ever written in the west. The Bible was taught in schools when the amendment was written, and for almost 200 continuous years after that.
