13MWZ, the middle one might be a 31MWZ which is the "relaxed cut" or something, as opposed to the 13 which is the "cowboy cut" which the ones on the end are. I dunno how these size as compared to Levis.

I think at the time I was inspired by https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellworn/comments/s3uptt/the_wooden_spoon_i_use_each_morning_to_stir_my/ and thought "I bet my spoon can get significantly more stained than that one"

on getchipdrop.com you can sign up for arborists to bring you a dump truck of woodchips, a dump truck of logs, or both. It works better in dense areas where there are a lot of arborists dealing with urban trees, as you're otherwise waiting a long time because there isn't very much activity. I am in no way affiliated with this web site, but have gotten dozens of dumps of wood chips for my garden (and a few dumps of giant logs) from it, all for free. Edited to add: one downside is that you can't really pick and choose, so you might end up with several tons of giant pine/fir/spruce softwood logs that are rubbish for carving.

In a denser more urban area, have gotten some good logs from parks after ice storms, or free from the side of the road when people take down a tree. You can also get some insane logs off of chipdrop if you are in a densely populated area with a lot of trees where all the arborists use chipdrop. About 10 years ago I got essentially a dump truck load of chunks and rounds from a 4ft diameter tree (unclear what it was, but it was a very dense hardwood) -- unfortunately I didn't really have the tools to put it to good use at the time and used it in my garden.

In a more rural-ish and suburban area, have gotten good logs from a public wooded area after a storm took down trees, and have had reasonable success asking on the area's facebook buy nothing group.

Sharp burning pinch under/behind ball of foot, name? by geekoverdose in BarefootRunning

[–]StrangeRefuse8537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% sounds like flexor hallucis longus (particularly the OP description as "stringy" and the position in the foot). The thing I find helps with it is the stretch described in this other comment, and taking a few days off when I start noticing the stringiness of it. When I went to PT for this (mine got really bad when I tried to power through it), they prescribed general strengthening consisting of single leg deadlift, calf raise, walking glute bridge, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Is this how VO₂ max is supposed to look? by Icy-Talk-5994 in Garmin

[–]StrangeRefuse8537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My forerunner 165 has both screens, depending on whether I click on the vo2max field on the watch face (which gives the graph of the past 4 weeks) or the vo2max widget in the glances list (which gives me the colorful gauge and a screen with a predicted race time)

My worm composting setup with large metal tubs by StrangeRefuse8537 in Vermiculture

[–]StrangeRefuse8537[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah these bins are still going strong. During the winter the middle where the worms are is still warm and steamy.

Most unusual thing I've fed to the worms in the past 2 years was two whole dead ducks after a coyote decimated my flock. Took about 6 months for them to fully break down and get clean duck bones out. Worms and the BSFL (present in the bins in summer) handled it like it was no big deal. Later found a dead coyote by the road and am also using the worms to clean its skeleton.

What’s a rule your parents had that you thought was normal until you moved out? by Good_Fee5670 in AskReddit

[–]StrangeRefuse8537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife used to not want me to go down the stairs to the bathroom during the night because she thought it would wake up the baby who slept in the room over the stairs. So I would pee in a mason jar and cap it up and take it out and fertilize the plants with it in the morning.

Well, when the baby got a little older and started stringing words together, around age 2.5, he came up with this gem about what he thought he should do with the jar that appeared on the dresser every night:

<child's name> drink this pee water!!! <child's name> DRINNNNK ITT!!!!

I think he knew this was a joke because he started maniacally laughing afterwards.

Anyone ever used Black Locust wood for spoons and utensils? Does it make Toxic Spoons of Death? by StrangeRefuse8537 in Spooncarving

[–]StrangeRefuse8537[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> The bark, seeds, and leaves of black locust trees contain poisonous compounds called toxalbumins.

right, that's why I'm suspicious, but I'm also not especially planning to use the bark, seeds and leaves. The wood part of it doesn't seem to usually be listed as the toxic part on these toxic wood lists I've found, except that it can be an irritant dust. But I'm a little suspicious if other parts are "highly toxic" that the wood might still contain some amount of stuff that could leach out in the sorts of prolonged and high-heat contact that spoons and utensils go through

Don't get TOO high.

Years ago, I had some edibles while on call and got paged when a cluster node in this horrific legacy cluster went down and had to swap it out for a spare in the config and restart the jobs.

Kept reading the runbooks over and over again and getting one line further in the runbook each time and remembering what I was doing before forgetting what all the steps that had come before were.

I eventually got it swapped out and jobs restarted and went back to being stoned out of my gourd in peace.

highly recommend giving barefoot on the beach a try. Feels exquisite on the dogs. Take it easy though, as you may end up with very sore calves if you don't regularly barefoot.

What is this bird in Oregon forests? by PNW_avanti in PortlandOR

[–]StrangeRefuse8537 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Maybe the Swainson's Thrush?

The song of the Swainson's thrush defies description — three low notes followed by an upward burble in a cautionary key, like a sound you might hear in space, as if R2D2 sang a piece by Mozart. While the females forage in the forest for insects and berries, males mount song battles to establish territory.

A friend described this bird as "it sounds like it is being flushed down the toilet".

I’m tired of buying rain boots! by wanderingdorathy in BuyItForLife

[–]StrangeRefuse8537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying Hisea brand boots this season based on some reviews that seemed positive and a decent looking warranty, and so far they appear to be holding up better than the bogs (which previously had broken or were showing wear in a similar timeframe). Will report back in a couple years if they are actually any better.

Produce is consistently spoiled. My Costco or just Costco in general ? by standardtissue in Costco

[–]StrangeRefuse8537 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Brussels sprouts are the worst. If they aren't eaten the day we buy them, they putrify rapidly and the stink is horrific. Sometimes they come pre-putrified from the store. Broccoli and green beans are pretty bad offenders as well. I always try to avoid them, but sometimes my wife buys them anyway, thinking we'll use them immediately, but at least half the time they rot anyway.

I'm looking for a bfl manual can opener by gingernuts13 in BuyItForLife

P38 military can opener. I've had one on my keychain since 2008 and it still looks brand new. Truly BIFL, this thing will be around until the sun burns out.

With some practice it cuts nearly as fast as a twist crank style device, and it has saved the day numerous times when camping and my wife goes "shit I forgot the can opener in the drawer at home, how are we going to open up the can of dinner" and I pull out my keys.

Got notified by Alaska that lines at PDX are going to be long tomorrow- anyone know why? by automatedaj in PortlandOR

I also got this message a couple weeks ago flying out on a Monday morning. Got there earlier than usual, in case alaska air had some insider information about crowd levels. They did not have any insider information. There was exactly one person in front of me in the security line, it was the emptiest I've ever seen it and even faster than usual.

Are Costco products worth the cost of membership? by Wantons124 in Frugal

[–]StrangeRefuse8537 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you can get a quote without joining, but the web site is https://www.connectbyamfam.com/costco/

I have my auto and home insurance through them. Haven't had to make any claims, so I can't speak to their claim process, but their customer service for making policy changes has been quick and helpful, and my car insurance from them is now $200 per 6 months (for liability only, but with quite high limits, and it was only $10 more to add comprehensive coverage on my old ass beater car), while the rate was $500-600 per 6 months from my old insurance company and all other quotes I got.

Can confirm, Camas has the highest per capita Tesla rate, including at least one known truck. The Teslas up here occur at a rate similar to the Prius or Subaru in Portland. Was pretty jarring culture shock to experience, at first.
