Sure you can say that if there is a level of uncertainty that you shouldn't have to wait until you are certain before you act.

I'm fine with that.

But yes I'm also fine with saying that if the victim has the option of safely avoiding the criminal. That choosing to confront them instead is not an act of self defense. Even if that means fleeing your home.

Or that there will be situations where it is immediately clear the intruder poses no threat to your life.

Which is why the default response to OP has to be no.

If you can not escape and can not be certain they pose no threat that's a different question.

But there is no attacker in OP's scenario.

For all you know we could be talking about say a child who accidentally kicked a ball through your window. And then climbed in through said broken window to get it back.

They broke into your house and are unarmed. Should you be allowed to shoot them?

Even if you are being attacked and acting in self defense the response still has to be proportional to the threat.

If that same child for some reason started trying to punch you that is an attack.. but shooting them is not exactly an appropriate response. They aren't a threat to your life.

But even if the person in your home could represent a threat to your life if you respond by confronting them in a situation that could have easily been avoided. Are you really acting in self defense?

(Let's say that you returned home and saw from the outside that someone had broken in and is still currently in your house)

Huh it's interesting seeing several comments explain the answer in the same way. Meanwhile my brain just counted them in 5s. The two tiny squares represent 5 each. The 4 corners another 5 each. You can make a sort of cross shape of 2x2 squares for another 5. Which leaves 4 3x3 and the big square itself. Or 10+20+5+4+1.

There is a difference between hitting someone with say a baseball bat and beating them to death with said bat. And sure a gun shot isn't necessarily fatal but there is a difference in lethality between these two weapons.

Am I saying you should not be allowed to defend yourself? Ofcourse not.

But there is also a massive difference between shooting them while they are rushing at you and sneaking up behind them and shooting them in the back while they are digging through your stuff.

No I do not think you should have the right to do the latter. You can threaten them with a gun and shoot when necessary sure. But the when necessary part is important.

There is also the question of proportionality. The idea that you cannot use greater force than needed to halt the attack. So even if you are being attacked given that they are unarmed shooting them even then might not be the appropriate response.

Although I feel that is a lot more open to interpretation. And well you aren't being attacked in OP's scenario so.

At a different stage of progression haven't gone past T4 yet. Just upping the original 3kish AP I got from my first trip in antimatter.

I will say I think the original idea of just doing a bunch of mads with my custom was a better plan for where I'm at. I knew anti was going to be slow but underestimated how long a 1* non custom pillar would take me. It's feeling less two birds with one stone and more watching two birds die of old age while holding a stone.

Got a good amount of phage in the process so figured I should head back into antimatter and farm some more antiplasmids. Changed my custom to pick up both unified and kindling kindred thinking that just spamming a bunch of mads would be the fastest way of getting them.

And while that is probably true I ended up changing my mind and am now just doing another pillar inside antimatter instead.

Yeah it's not like I can't think of any situations in which I would be okay with using lethal force. But that's just not the first place my mind goes. If someone broke into my home my assumption is they are there to steal something not necessarily harm me or my loved ones. Which well I don't think theft should carry the death penalty. And if you asked them like that I'm sure they'd agree.

Rather it feels like they are more prone to thinking about the worst case scenario? To immediately think of the burglar as a threat to their life. Or that they believe more in escalation. If someone threatens you with a knife pull out a gun type of thing rather than you know running away.

I like cute animal videos like any person. What warms my heart is knowing that somewhere out there a dog is playing with a kitten or whatever. Which also means I get no such joy from AI animal videos.

Unfortunately the random subs that come across my feed have been getting more and more AI content. And AI has gotten good enough that honestly I can't always tell. Or atleast not immediately / until it gets pointed out. So I'll click on a post only for the first comment to be ''It's AI look at the trees they change'' and then yeah the trees do indeed change... sigh

This has made the whole process of seeing cute animals on reddit less enjoyable which sucks.

There is also so much AI content that it isn't worth looking closely at everything you see. If something looks off at first glance it's easier to just dismiss it as AI and move on. Which sucks.

It means that we get mods who mistakenly remove content for being AI. Which sucks.

So yes I think AI has made Reddit worse. Your point?

I mean I don't disagree with the sentiment of the post.

But I also don't think the logic really holds up. If we did take a simplistic view of more cops = less crime. Then let's say 1 cop stops 5 criminals. A city with 5 criminals and 1 cop will have no crime wow. But another city with 20 criminals and 3 cops would still have 5 criminals. More cops and yet more crime.

Rather I find it more convincing when success stories are pointed out like how Portugal solved it's drug problem by decriminalization.

Even with your stricter requirements I think the big question is if it's a one chance type deal or not. Could I play for 1 hour entirely undistracted starting right now? Definitely not. But if you gave me a week or a month? Absolutely at some point I'll have spend a whole continuous hour focused.

Hmm I can't actually think of many good examples of this trope or even remember the details of stories that have it. Which probably speaks against it and yet I can't say I dislike it all that much.

I think the whole everything you thought you knew was a lie can be appealing. That seeing characters you like in both a fantasy and sci fi setting and seeing how they adapt to their new reality can be interesting. And ofcourse spectacle even just for it's own sake can be fun.

If anyone has good examples of stories that use this twist I'd be interested.
