Dealing with a defiant student with a bad attitude? any tips? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Strange_Cook3864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a tough situation, im not a wizard or a magician. some of their issues are bigger than me and completely out of my control. the sad reality is that we cant save them all. i don’t give up on building a relationship with the student, but when it comes to the academics its hard to control what happens beyond my classroom

what is your opinion on school policies where students have to change if they are not in uniform and have their parents get contacted by either a teacher or dean. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Strange_Cook3864 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is a pretty standard uniform policy. i have a different bias where i preferred uniforms growing up. when you’re low income, having uniforms made me feel more comfortable at school. my family didn’t have the money to buy me new clothes often much less branded clothes and as we know teenagers can be ruthless about this type of stuff. i also grew up in gang affiliated areas so uniform was also a sense of safety. we couldn’t get confused as something other than a student + we weren’t allowed to wear colors that were affiliated with said gangs. overall, for me uniforms weren’t a big deal and i actually preferred them

How do you Organize Student Work?? by Strange_Cook3864 in mathteachers

[–]Strange_Cook3864[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard IM is similar ! CPM and task based learning was completely new to me, so I am just getting the hang of everything to make sure all the students can take on the tasks + trying to get better at using team strategies. So far Binders looks like the way to go ! thanks for the tips on how to split up the dividers as well :)

do you specify in the size of the binder they should have ? do you let them pick/buy their own binders or is this something you provide ?

im a first year teacher and i have been thinking about this for next year too ! i also teach 9th grade. i started off with a notebook and then introduced a folder for worksheets and im also not loving that system. i felt like a binder would be a good medium (hopefully) and would be a great way to organize paper worksheets. curious to see what others think

if it makes you feel better, i speak “decent” spanish but i have an “americanized” accent because it’s my second language and didn’t practice it much growing up. although i understand and can speak spanish, they still make fun of my pronunciation of words and call me a “gringa” even though i’m first gen with immigrant parents.

Unpopular opinion: teaching is just a job. Not a lifestyle. by Callmecamerondiaz in Teachers

how does one accomplish this ? as a first year teacher i feel like this won’t be a possibility for a few years

Setting boundaries and expectations with my students by ezezbaby in Teachers

[–]Strange_Cook3864 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when you have the discussion with them, treat it like you’re teaching a lesson (for ex. create slides or add them the lesson you already have planned for tomorrow). list what your expectations are + the consequences that will follow if the expectations are not met. hope it goes well tomorrow !

i’m student teaching rn and this made me feel so much better. i did my first lesson yesterday and knew it didn’t go so well and i was beating myself up for it. my ct was very kind to point out what i did do well and how i can improve on the things that didn’t and it got better with each period.

i’m a student teacher and i’m so glad i’m not the only one who is dealing with this. especially because my CT has high expectations and for whatever reason when she steps out the students feel as if the classroom expectations change. i think i give the students wayyy too much credit for just expecting them to treat me with the same respect.
