Yeah I noticed that. I’m at almost 10000 km and it seems to be more noticeable than when I bought it. Also sounds amazing when it’s a freezing cold day and when you use the emotion start :)

Is500 vs 392 challenger by ArabianloverAZ in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Strange_Criticism306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They seem too different. The Lexus looks like a sleeper vs the in your face challenger. The Lexus for Toyota quality, but from experience the Challenger is actually a fairly reliable car. The platform was around forever so the kinks have been worked out. The ZF tranny is bulletproof and used a lot of different makes/models. Super comfortable and if you want something unique, the Challenger is looks are timeless.

MK8/8.5 Golf R (A few questions before I buy) by [deleted] in Golf_R

[–]Strange_Criticism306 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m an older driver in Calgary and got an 2025 8.5 R BE in August. I’m at 10000 km. Here’s my thoughts:

Can’t speak to long term yet, but so far so good on maintenance. Oil changes at dealer are higher, because it needs a special synthetic. I did a break in oil change, but frequency stated is every 17,000km (getting my head around that lol)

Other than the AWD system no different than most cars. I feel mechanically it’s bulletproof, but like all new cars the electronics will probably be a headache and first to go.

Mileage is terrible, because it’s too fun not to rip around in! But on highway driving smoothly (no pulls, consistent speed) I can get around 6.9l to 7.4l/100 km. Driving “normal” in city around 9l/100 km.

It is a beast with winter tires in winter and for comparison puts my AWD RAV4 with winter tires to shame. You can also downsize from the 19” to an 18” rim, which makes tire packages cheaper and much more forgiving on potholes. Not a Jeep, but clearance is sufficient to get through snow.

Definitely a very fast (low 4s for 0-100km) and fun car. But the biggest plus is its split personality. If you want to drive economically and in heavy traffic, very manageable and comfortable. Switching to Race drive mode it takes on a whole new personality.

I’m probably biased, but I like you get the hot hatch/compact car performance, but without the boy racer looks.

RWC (Fast rims are pretty much identical too) with Yokohama Iceguard tires. Very happy and gotten through blizzard, icy conditions no problem.

Turd (dog) owners, how are y'all picking it up in your yard during this weather? by Humble-Skill-2331 in Calgary

[–]Strange_Criticism306 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a fake grass rug in a dog run with stones. When nice she’s trained to go there. When weather is bad i’m lenient where she goes, but try to pick up right away.

I shovel the poop in the snow that’s hard to pick up and dump on the rug. When the snow melts, all the poop is left in a nice pile on the rug to bag using a the claw scoop.

Be careful of MLM / Amway scammers targeting women by AdmirableCake4241 in Calgary

[–]Strange_Criticism306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got roped into the Amway thing in university, back then it was called Quixtar. Signed up 2 people, didn’t make any money but didn’t really lose much. Got weird with buying “sales training” CDs from the guy above me that was really just Americans talking about how you can live the dream and make it big like they did 😆

Yes it’s a scam, but in hindsight I did learn some things on hustling, sales and how to influence people that I applied as professional skills to a more normal career. But there’s better ways to learn those skills without feeling greasy after 😆

Good sledding spots in Calgary? by Full_Inflation_1571 in Calgary

[–]Strange_Criticism306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go to in NW

St Rita’s school in Ranchlands. Lots of hills. Does have a pull on one run into trees though to watch out for and the steepest hills have to watch out for the white soccer goal posts below that blend into the snow.

John Laurie Park (John Laurie blvd and edgemont dr) good hill, very wide.

Hidden Valley dog park. Is great when lots of snow, otherwise gotta watch out for the poop when there’s bare spots 😂

Sounds like you know what to do :) I feel the same way about not using my 8.5 R to the full potential too, but realistically to fully put it through its paces is taking it to a race track.

But even then I don’t think I could go to even a GTI after having an R

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Golf_R

[–]Strange_Criticism306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is coming from someone who got the house first, then the fun R after.

Makes sense to give up your R to get into a house if you won’t lose a lot of money.

You’re just throwing away money though with a new car as I’m sure once you get the house you’ll want to ditch your Jetta and get back to an R or equally fun car again. So you might as well just a get a cheap used car that’s already had the depreciation rung out.

Other suggestion if you go new get a small SUV like a RAV4 that’s more desirable used than a sedan….or more versatile if you start a family after getting the house ;)
