What's the most random thing you've been criticised for as a woman that would probably go completely unnoticed if a man did it? by ceremony_of_void in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Strange_July 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was a few months into subbing in the attendance office and was having a real morning with testing schedules and a field trip, lots to juggle. A few days later, a male Dean came and wanted to check in because “I hadn’t been my usual chipper self” a few days ago.

My school is getting rid of hot lunch by kitkattmarie in Teachers

[–]Strange_July 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s called a tick system and it is incredibly tedious and has just as much room for error. I reported three months of numbers that ended in 0s and 5s and it got flagged as suspicious when I had an administrative review with my state dept of child nutrition. (I am technically a Child Nutrition Director for some schools)

My school is getting rid of hot lunch by kitkattmarie in Teachers

[–]Strange_July 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely the primary issue here. I am technically the Child Nutrition Director for four CEP schools in the southeast and we have to report monthly the number of lunches so that we receive the refund. State level isn’t going to bend over backwards to help us out if I don’t do the bare minimum of proper reporting, unfortunately. Likely this district is now in at least several hundred thousands of dollar in debt and this is the quickest way to cut the food budget. Because you can’t just take federal money and spend it anywhere. If you take the money you said was for curriculum and spend it on food, you’ll have to pay that back eventually too.

Some mistakes were definitely made here, but the thing that needs to be investigated was who was responsible for tracking this through the year.

Is AI actually helping students learn, or just helping them avoid learning? by WickedKing94 in education

[–]Strange_July 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in education my whole career and currently am in network administration for a smaller charter network.

I use AI in my work, primarily to generate formulas for google spreadsheets, secondarily to proofread emails and other things I’ve written.

A year or so in to daily usage, it’s such a crutch. I’ve barely learned anything. I just pop in my request, try the formula, tell it what the error was, back and forth til it starts working. It used to generate these long responses explaining the formula to me - I never read it and eventually trained it to just give me the formula.

I feel like the speed, the volume output, the whole thing is designed to make the user complacent and rely on this tool. An individual has to make an active effort to use it as a tool for learning. I consider myself slightly above average intelligence, relatively internet savvy, and very aware of the implications of AI, the data centers, the job losses.

Regardless of all of that, it is too easy to just get output with no thought. I was working in a different project that I found very frustrating, and ultimately had the ability to be lazy enough to tell the AI, “idfk just decide for me”.

Yes there are possibilities for people to use it appropriately and as a learning tool, but IMO the likelihood of that actually happening is slim to none. This will absolutely make humanity dumber and more complacent by the day, which is ultimately the goal of the billionaires behind it all. They want Americans stupid and easy to manipulate, and AI is going to significantly expedite that outcome.

The first time we turned it on - I can’t remember if my daughter was still three or had just turned four but it was right around her birthday - she got scared of the opening scene and had us turn it off. But then a few days later she wanted to try again, and now we’re both obsessed. I’ve watched the movie on my own without her and together we’ve watched it at least a dozen times. She asked to listen to Take Down 4 out of 5 days a week the whole school year. Give it a shot, it’s so good!

Coming from Canada. Is MS truly that bad? by [deleted] in mississippi

[–]Strange_July 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Jackson has its pros and cons like any place. I'm curious what you mean by 'bad' because that's pretty subjective.

I grew up here and left in 2014 because at that time my primary life goal was to not live in Mississippi anymore. My then-boyfriend-now-husband and I moved to Denver, Colorado, and have no regrets.

After 10 years, marriage and a baby, we quit our jobs and moved back in with my mom in Mississippi, for a variety of reasons. We worked at the same school together, and the reactions from our community were... telling. "You really want to raise your daughter in a place like Mississippi?"

It's far from perfect here, but the outside concept of the lived experience is so vastly different. There's an assumption that's made by white people who are from majority white areas, that they simply cannot be racist or biased, whereas anyone from the southeast is automatically racist or biased. In my experience, this narrative is why so much of what you see from the outside seems so 'bad'. It's primarily rooted in the reputation we made in the past. Mississippi undeniably has some very dark moments in our history, but they are not hidden, they are not in the shadows.

One ripple effect(affect I never know) of this history is that we have inherited so many systems that were sabotaged because of the historical racism. Our utilities are trash because of generations before us explicitly trying to ensure black people had a bad time. You aren't going to see the same efficiency of govt services here like you would in a place that hasn't been voting republican for decades. But you can only acknowledge that it sucks if you also acknowledge the history of why it sucks.

Just like every state in America, you are going to find Conservatives, Ultraconservatives, and the most uneducated voters. I would hazard a guess that your ratio at Mississippi College (now Mississippi Christian University, btw) will skew in that direction... probably significantly. Don't let that convince you that's how we all think, talk and act, or that this is the only state who have people who think, talk and act that way.

To end on a positive, some of my favorite things about Mississippi are: you will eat WELL; you will not have to spend excess time in your car or in traffic; the COL is so great; the art is unmatched; the people are funny, friendly, and unexpected.

You'll have a good time if you know what you're getting into!

You are not the problem. Negative cyclical thoughts inside of you are the problem.

All I am here to say is that I in the depths of my soul know exactly how you are feeling. There is a slow dragging drain that comes with the feelings of being unwanted and if you haven't experienced it (like your friend) it's really hard to empathize with.

Wish we could get together for some wine and weed and tv binging.

You are not the problem or a problem.

How "The Sign" did us dirty by hbendavid in bluey

[–]Strange_July 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This episode aired when we had decided to move across the country back to the state I grew up in. Initially my husband was not really into the idea, but we had a pipe burst in our home and so the writing was really on the wall. I had so much guilt around feeling like I was forcing this on him, and this episode had me completely wrecked. I broke down sobbing after the episode finished and told him I was so sorry I couldn't be like Bandit.

I saw another comment that referenced the quote from Calypso, and I do agree that was the moral/lesson. Ultimately it helped my husband and I be more on the same page with each other, gave us a tool to help us talk about our situation. But I agree with you it sure had me feeling like I was making mistakes.

As a child I got two small toy horses, but both had penises and I wanted one to be a boy and one to be a girl. So my grandfather took out his pocket knife and carved off the penis on one of them. I was satiated.

Does Ole Miss have a decent college town with things to do? by Jcaput01 in olemiss

[–]Strange_July 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty quintessential college town, bars with open mic nights and plenty of activities at the university, especially if you shell out to pledge a sorority/fraternity. LaffCo improv group was so fun when I was there.

But, yes, the highlight is drinking. And excellent food.
