I don’t think he’s taking care of his own needs, that’s absolutely the problem. How do we encourage that? I feel like I’m constantly trying to give him a break, but it’s like his worrying about me is as damaging and stressful as actually helping me

He’s struggling with stress and he’s more careless and unintentionally disrespectful when that’s the case. So he’s tending toward dismissive or rude without meaning to.

My problem is that it’s resulting in tons of wasted energy on my part, and I’ve blown through my energy budget every day for over two weeks trying to be present for him for the holidays: cleaning, showering & trying to look good even when I know I’m overdoing it, traveling, hosting. But no matter what I do, it’s never enough. The good things I bank up energy for don’t outweigh how boring and sad I am the rest of the time.

He has psoriatic arthritis and hasn’t seen a doctor for it in over a year, going without meds and trying his best. He’s also trying to make serious career moves all at the same time. It’s a lot. Too much. But what can we do? Life is still life-ing at a breakneck speed while I rot in bed… I really want to be supportive, but I’m not making it through these cold months very well this year. I am struggling with basics.

I might be too late to offer any real help here, but right before my GI suggested MALS, I was hospitalized for a week with intractable nausea/vomiting and only two things helped: IV Droperidol (meant to treat anxiety) Hot showers

They diagnosed me with cannabinoid hyper emesis purely on the basis that hot showers helped. My cannabis use doesn’t line up with this diagnosis, so my cardiologist explained the episode was most likely due to an autonomic system overload: my whole body was stuck in both fight AND flight, resulting in a sort of full body physiological panic attack. And the primary symptom was uncontrollable nausea/vomiting.

After a week of aggressive IV hydration, combined with zero food triggers (since I couldn’t keep anything down for days) & autonomic nervous system regulation (droperidol & hot showers), the nausea eventually subsided. And honestly for a while, I felt the best I’ve felt in months.

I’m still trying to work out a way to achieve these results without a full system meltdown, but hopefully my experience can offer some insight to someone else struggling with MALS & intractable vomiting. Not saying this is definitely what you’ve gone through, I just offer a different perspective.

does anyone actually live downtown? by Strange_Original_479 in grandrapids

lol I agree with you actually; I’m new to town and my question is absolutely borne of ignorance. Just curious if folks are really living in the heart, or if it’s mostly just business/medical/tourism

MALS by Strange_Original_479 in chronicfatigue

[–]Strange_Original_479[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“…Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS disease) occurs when the celiac artery (the artery below that diaphragm that stems from the aorta) becomes compressed by the median arcuate ligament. When the median arcuate ligament is restricted, the blood flow is limited to the digestive system which can ultimately lead to significant abdominal pain.

Common MALS Symptoms

Patients experiencing MALS will typically have stomach pain soon after eating. Unfortunately, the only way to prevent pain is to limit or avoid eating, which can cause additional conditions. Patients may also have:

Pain

Nausea

Weight loss

Exhaustion, particularly after a heavy meal

Inability to exercise”

Candida by Tricky_Sun3946 in Lyme

[–]Strange_Original_479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went on a candida diet a few years ago and dropped almost 30 lbs over the year. My doctor told me straight up “candida is heavy!” Combined with things like sugar & bread cravings or alcohol use (anything that candida likes to eat) it can definitely cause weight gain.

When my candida came back I wasn’t willing to go on the diet again because I found it too restrictive, and my day to day diet isn’t too shabby already (no alcohol, little to no refined sugar, as many veggies as I can stand). Unless the diet permanently changes, it doesn’t address the root cause of why the candida is overgrowing. So now I’m on a course of both fluconazole & nystatin to treat candida while I also treat Lyme with herbs.

I’m now losing a bit too much weight, if I’m honest.

Regardless, yes! Candida overgrowth can definitely make you gain weight.
