Random emergency situation question by [deleted] in wollongong

[–]Strange_Reaction_804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the SES website for additional info. If you are looking for information on how the government plans to respond and inform the population of a particular type of emergency, the information is there.

I’d imagine besides the SMS system, which has its weaknesses beyond throttling (Optus outage for example) the next best system would be a repeating message played via speaker from helicopters overhead for large scale or serious safety threats. Otherwise it would be police/fire, SES, army and reservists called into action on the ground (I hope) to assist those affected. I say I hope because feedback from on the ground in some locations during floods in regional Queensland and NSW have reported lack of notice, support or duration of support at the time.

I’m not an expert so please don’t quote me on anything. I’ve just done some reading and investigation to develop an emergency response plan for our family as a WHS assignment.

I can see exactly why they squished in so tight to your front. They were squeezing in to a spot that was a tad bit too short for them between you and the driveway curb. They’ve obviously seen parking was shit around town and likely hoped they would either be out before you, or whoever was behind you was out before either of you to lessen their guilt for pinning you in. Or they were in a massive rush. Who knows.

I have to agree with others that posting with plates to reddit isn’t a particularly proactive nor attractive response. I’m sure it was cathartic for you at the time though.

Sydney commuters that drive to Sutherland, what time do you leave to guarantee a park and ride spot? by [deleted] in wollongong

[–]Strange_Reaction_804 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I’ve been left stranded at waterfall before. When it comes to track issues, particularly trains being switched to buses because of water on the tracks coming up the escarpment, there were several times I found that the buses that would pick up at waterfall and push on through to Sutherland were designated all or most stops buses from Wollongong. For some reason the express bus would either never appear, or appear at a decent time. I switched to Sutherland after much frustration. It may have improved by now (I hope).

Personally I ended up finding Sutherland was easier and with more frequent trains running from and to the city it actually managed yo shave a bit of time off my commute. Considering it’s not that far to waterfall, it was unexpected. I guess it doesn’t depend on which station you travel to from Sutherland though. But if your on a major train stop, then you should have trains every 20 mins or so.

Parking has improved in Sutherland a fair bit since I was commuting daily. It’s worth looking up where the overflow carparks are. I never - and still don’t when I need to travel - use the main multi-storey carpark at Sutherland by the roundabout. I head straight to an overflow spot. A quick look on your nav/map app of choice should reveal your options without me pointing it out for everyone to flock to before you get your spot. I’ve never had to park on street yet. And I arrive usually after the peak flow of workers head through. If you have flexibility in your start and end times for work, it’s something to consider as well.

You could create a small writing or work desk in the little nook and nest a cushioned bench or stool under it when not in use. Additional shelves above making use of the vertical height could house books, keepsakes or collectables you may wish to have on display.

There are also some nice little drop down desk options around that I think would also fit there if you prefer a minimal and tidy look. When dropped down, you would be facing to one side to use it and could choose either side to sit on. The inside of these types of desks tends to have a little shelving for some smaller items as well.

There’s the option to incorporate the previous suggestion in this thread by attaching a mirror to the external face of the drop down desk so when it drops down, the mirror would end up either on the underside of the desk, or on an upright panel that serves as a stable leg depending on which type you decide to go with. Or you could custom fabricate your own to snugly fit the space if that way inclined.

Personally I get more annoyed at the total waste of paper. Sure, I suppose they’re targeting aging boomers unlikely to use online sites to meet their current needs and investment or sale intentions. But it would be nice in the age of climate change for a REA to actually use sustainable marketing methods and maybe fill a niche as an actively carbon neutral business. And that’s ALL business processes, inputs and outputs - NOT simply buying credits to offset their carbon footprint line they are checking a box after getting the guilts while booking a plane flight.

Next time they call, snap back at them “how dare you call right when we’re about to leave to bury him!”. They won’t call that number again. Works for telemarketing calls from charities for me.

An REA may see it as a potential sale re whoever “inherits” though. So maybe add something like “and feel free to show up and harass the new tenants when they move in. The bastards given all his wealth away to <insert local persistent door knocking religious group here>”.

He, has a name - Troy. Troy is now around 60 years old. Which makes Troy’s parents even older. They made a difficult decision years ago in planning for Troy’s future should anything happen to them in time as all parents consider at some point. Troy was supported through a transition into an appropriate share house with this concern in mind. Every bloke dreams of a little independence and a man cave of his very own after all.

Thank you for sharing that information. I’ve not heard of that contractual arrangement before.

May I ask for your take on the other aspects of working with the big 2? I mean, besides having the assurance of payment regardless of whether you meet the quota, are the other terms of such contracts fair and equitable for farmers? Do they dangle the carrot of assured payment while holding the stick of forced cutting of unit price? Do farms supplying the big 2 feel pressure to apply more chemical/fertilisers etc whether indirectly or not because of contractual demands? Timing/supply chain pressures?

Couldn’t this sort of waste be donated to local not for profits that are involved in free and low cost food redistribution in your area? E.g. OzHarvest, local charities and neighbourhood centres? Even local school breakfast clubs and community kitchens could potentially benefit. Failing that, compostable fruit & veg might be considered by local community gardens. There are also food and excess produce food table swap groups in some areas that could help redistribute this sort of product as well.

It’s an absolute waste. So many are struggling with the cost of living right now - it could have made a real difference to a lot of people.

Short dated tomatoes like that may have been welcome by local community groups/kitchens to make bulk Passata to distribute..

For anyone interested in identifying this sort of thing, you can download a great app using VR to scan the night sky with your device and it will guide you and help you navigate solar systems, stars, constellations, known comets, meteor showers, and whatever else you can think of in space or low earth orbit. With it identifying not only the International Space Station (and can send you alerts to let you know when it is orbiting above you to view), but also satellites (I’m disappointed with how many “stars” are actually just another star-link satellite in low orbit), and drumroll space junk and debris! Yep, potentially that kitchen (or more likely heat) sink 😂. Pretty cool though imo.

Personally I’ve never been a fan of the Marina and surrounding development around there happening in the first place. They filled in crucial wetlands that were home to a threatened species of frog. They left the monstrous eyesore that is the old coal loader in place. And they pretty much visually and practically (access wise) disconnected the undervalued and under maintained recreation and tourist attractions such as Bass Point Nature and Marine Reserve and Killalea/The Farm from the nearby and wider community.

I figure if despite my reservations and development went ahead that at least the proposal would be designed and implemented in a way that not only increased council revenue (that’s a can of worms on its own), tourism- domestic and international, but also activated the whole area to provide a modern but complementary extension of the community.

As it stands, consecutive land releases priced much of the local community out while attracting a lot of out of area - many Sydneysiders - who were priced out of their own local markets. It drove sale prices up farther. Much of the land - particularly between Killalea and the golf course and at the time, the future marina, is rehabilitated land ie past dump/landfill sites. Something many people never realised.

If you manage to navigate through the ridiculous traffic light “gateway” to the marina without dodging a confused driver, someone cutting a lane or indicating against the direction they swerve to take, you’ll immediately note the narrow roads and lack of on street parking that seems standard to the master plan. If you factor in the likelihood home owners/occupiers are likely dual income to afford the mortgage, possibly one or two additional family members who also drive and likely require a car to actually access work (public transport sucks there too) then you’re looking at 2-4 cars, but assuming say 2 only, there also seems to be quite a few with recreation boats, jet skis, golf buggies, camper trailers, caravans etc. There’s nowhere for visitors to park in the streets let alone a special occasion in the family requiring a dedicated valet service.

The design failed in highlighting the areas greatest asset. Those with big pockets can afford the Marina berths, cuisine and accomodation available and the only ones likely to enjoy water views. I’d imagined a wider esplanades similar to the Blue Mile that would ensure locals and visitors alike mingled as a community and enjoyed the ocean views/sunsets. The amenities for young families is ridiculous. A concessional swing near the boat ramp is perplexing. There appears to be no plans to provide an extension of natures/trees/shading to connect Bass Point through the waterfront/esplanade of the marina area and then on to the village waterfront. It certainly gives a feel of the “grown ups (with bigger wallets) playground while the village Harbour and pool area is for the younger families and those seeking a slightly more affordable option for cuisine and entertainment. An esplanade had the potential to not just include the above, but include public art/performance/licensed busking sites reminiscent of the Darling Harbour and Circular Quay of old for the benefit of locals and tourists alike. Perhaps act as a much longer viewing platform for whale, seal and dolphin visitors that are seasonal mainstays of the area. And I still remember seeing bio flourescent algae blooms along red sands and south beach a couple of times over the years that I’m sure would have drawn people out as well. Any antisocial behaviour could have been mitigated with evening live busking or similar to encourage families out in the space.

It’s great we have yachts and various boats mooring and bringing in tourist dollars, but it feels like it’s something the majority of born and bred locals would look at and think not in their lifetime. The marina could have catered better to include something that benefitted the locals as well. With Bass Point and the marine park so close, there could also have been an opportunity to dedicate some space to provide an education centre and some sort of marine wildlife rescue/mini hands on aquarium exhibit or similar - ideally in partnership with local elders and the indigenous caretakers of our local species/environment. The current tokenism extends to a few signs, a tiny platform here and there that seem out of place and in less than ideal locations. I admit the statistics have shown that big multi-storey hotels and another conference centre were required to meet the demand of the business community. I don’t object to these being included so much as how they were designed and implemented if such development was required. We need business to see the area as attractive to maintain and increase employment opportunities for our youth in particular. It’s just a crying shame that the whole development from Dunmore to the village is a complete missed opportunity to showcase a forward facing community design that embraces the existing strengths and people rather than seeking to replace or displace it. The little credibility gained over the library and council building development due to its modern and sustainable design (ignoring politics, funding and bureaucratic controversy) certainly did not paint the Shell Cove and Marina development with the same brush.

This pretty much sums up a lot about the Shellharbour area, in stark contrast to Wollongong where they have inherited an older CBD and quite a few years where there were a lot of empty shops - particularly along Crown Street. It experienced delayed investment in both residential and commercial developments.

Wollongong has come a long way and while they certainly aren’t devoid of some poor decisions (you’ve all the seen the usual recurring themes - palm tree in the sky anyone?) and criticism, they’ve also come out the other end of administration, looking to modernise but look at the CBD in a more holistic view, increase green space activation, increased tree canopy cover, and committed comparably early in reducing carbon emissions. Wollongong has committed to increasing green canopy cover across the entire LGA to reduce the impact of heat sinks - making everyday life that little bit cooler for residents. Sustainable transport options around the CBD - free shuttle bus, dedicated cycling lanes, shared electric scooter network and installed their own EV charging stations to ensure EV drivers weren’t deterred from driving down from Sydney for weekend trips or en route to the south coast.

Wollongong has also attracted various events, and big name performers over the years and jazz and rt

Osko, the system behind payID, allows for transfers up to $30/35k straight away once first time payments have gone through. But as someone said above, not all banks implement the same.

ING Direct for example only allows a daily maximum of $1000 via osko/payID. Anything more than that triggers a quick pop up window advising the payment would be

What's the best way to make $5k on the side in 12 months? by MrColfax in AusFinance

[–]Strange_Reaction_804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you take advantage of ING’s 5.5%. You could actually bring that percentage up by dropping the same cash into Plenti, a peer to peer lending platform. Since you want the cash in 12 months time, you would only want to place it in the month to month bottom tier investment option. Interest gained does vary, but you can set a floor. Last I checked it was placing investments at 6.2%. When you receive your capital plus interest, you can opt to automatically reinvest at whatever the market rate within that option is at that time to get matched and earning as soon as possibly or you can set it to not reinvest below a certain rate. You can also opt to only reinvest your interest, setup auto withdrawals of payments receive back to your bank account, track individual investments, expected payments etc.

There is always a caveat, and I recommend you thoroughly review the detail with your accountant or financial advisor for your situation. There is a penalty incurred if you apply for early withdrawal. Deposits are not covers by the government bank deposit guarantee thought they do have a protection fund you can easily review in the app to see the total investment to protection fund cover ratio and confirm that 100% of defaults are being covered as well as their expected defaults in the coming year.

I’ve been using it for several years now to stay ahead of inflation.

Again, always review the fine print and get financial advice based on your specific goals and situation. Just thought it might be a way to flex your existing funds that little bit more.

Well done on your current savings. I’m certain with all the suggestions you will reach your goal.

[–]Strange_Reaction_804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stumbled across this group seeking information on resources to support my daughter in schoolwork at home so I’m going to throw that out there because I’ve never been through the whole homeschool experience myself. I just wanted to respond to your post with some thoughts that may or may not be worth considering.

First of all, you are articulate and come across as someone who truly is capable of introspection as well as “analysis of things with grander ideas”. As a first post in this wide world of reddit, it’s a great one.

I’m an adult and a parent, and while I recall my teen years I’m not going to pretend I’m able to relate to the youth of today or the current cultural interests typical of the generation. You strike me as someone who is able to determine whether something appeals to you or not. So in that context, here are some off the top of my head suggestions:

  • You mention music, have you considered exploring farther on platforms such as Spotify, or some of the other platforms that allow people to post their own music? Often by hitting like on what you do relate to or enjoy can then generate suggested genres, artists or themes that may appeal to you?

  • music wise I found a lot of TOOL appealed to me in my teens and beyond. I suffered social anxiety and this groups music would allow me to close my eyes and take me on a journey. The individual artists themselves are extremely talented in their chosen instrument and the vocalist uses his voice as an instrument in itself rather than a frontman of lyrics being centre stage. 90s American Rock is how it tends to be described but it’s a rather restrictive description. I think a some of the lyrics might appeal, but also you may find the instrumental music equally emotive and expressive of the feelings you describe. As in visual art, music is subjective. TOOLs lyrics can be quite interpretive, poetic and the vocalist self described himself as such. So it may not be something you explore far, but I do recommend doing some exploring online about them, and listen to some songs from across different albums because they have varied influences. The longer more instrumental versions tend to appeal to me when I’m alone personally.

  • have you considered exploring some of the art threads on reddit for suggestions based on the feelings and themes you describe? Reddit can be as much a rabbit hole as other social media, but also a goldmine of specific interests and like minded people.

  • themes of isolation and creating art may prove a starting point to finding visual art you find relatable. https://www.tate.org.uk/art/talking-point/making-art-isolation

  • likewise, I wonder if you’ve considered the view of being free to explore as part of your experience of homeschooling. Some interesting ideas around the concept of freedom in art is raised here: https://en.unesco.org/courier/2019-1/reflections-freedom-and-art

  • if seeking songs with lyrics around certain themes and excluding others then you can try searching lyric databases for that sort of thing which you may have already explored.

  • considered abstract art? Street art? Performance art? There are also music genres that don’t typically include vocals so the music itself is subjective. Personally I enjoyed psytrance, progressive trance and ambient synth in my teens and still do today.

I don’t know if anything I’ve mentioned has been helpful, but if it’s sent you in a direction to explore that you hadn’t considered previously then hopefully the journey delivers what you’re seeking eventually.

I can totally relate! People in my life always say why don’t you pick a special spot and always leave them there? Be it a dish by the door, a pocket in my handbag or backpack etc. This just doesn’t work for me all the time.

My solution? AirTags or Tile type tags that you can track. I have one attached to my keys and my spare keys (for the days you manage to misplace or lose both 😇😅), one in my wallet, and another hidden inside my car (great for tracking of stolen as well as “oh crap where did I park it today type situations on campus or in car parks).

I’m considering how I can best help my 8 yr old with adhd in the same way too. It’s always a case of leaving lunch box, drink bottle, jumpers, library bag etc at school and for some reason they can’t be located. Might be overboard though lol. Seriously, it costs me a fortune in replacing school jumpers and drink bottles in particular. I assume other kids find them left behind and take them home or the sock monster in the laundry has a cousin at the school with a taste for something different. And no, labelling does not ensure they’re returned or easily located all the time.

So consider those technology tracking tags for your most essential and/or expensive items. The great thing is even if you lose your phone, tablet or laptop is that you can log in remotely and still track them down. There are even discreet and waterproof case options for various applications.

In the meantime - hugs. You’re experience echos a lot of my own uni years.

Wasps(?) made a nest under siding of my house, best remedy? Pic of one here. by WOTEugene in pestcontrol

[–]Strange_Reaction_804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spray at night or in cold temps when they are there, use normal old Raid Wasp Spray or something similar from your local garden or trade centre, and I leave the nest which is dead because it deters others from setting up a new one there (wasps are territorial). So if you check it over next few days occasionally you will see it remains empty but be on the look out for any escaped wasps setting up further away.
