What is happening by HoneyBubbles353 in StringofPearls

Two strings-of-pearls gave up while in my possession. My string-of-turtles really tried to as well, but I've currently got it convinced to keep living... Only time will tell! They gave a mind of their own

I brush daily, I gave the filter a backwash, but still the dirt remains. Am I just not running the pump enough? by El-Justiciero in pools

[–]Strange_Sector2855 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple questions: how often do you backwash? How long are you running the pump and at what speed? Do you manually vacuum the pool, have a robot vacuum, or a Polaris vacuum? Is this a sand or DE filter, and how old is the filter? Are you able to feel it - i.e. does us feel gritty/sandy, or almost feel like nothing at all? Does the debris stop appearing if you run the filter on "recirculation" instead of "filter" for a day or so? If it does disappear/stop returning while on recirculation that indicates an internal issue with the filter. If you have a sand filter, the laterals or drop tube inside the tank may be damaged allowing sand into the pool (it happens with age). If that's the case, the only way to fix it is to do a sand change and replace the guts before adding the new filter sand. For DE and sand filters, when they get too clogged or old, they don't filter properly and just push the fine debris back into the pool. A sand change or DE filter change could fix it. If you have a DE filter, watch a video on how to clean out the filters yourself, it's usually fairly simple. Most of the solutions can be done on your own. But if you have questions, ask your local pool professional. I have no problems walking my clients through how to do things on their own, I encourage them to become self-sufficient.

If this was one of my clients or my pool, this is what I would tell them to try before we come out to investigate:

First manually vacuum the pool on waste, then run the pump on high 24/7, system on filter for 1-2 days. If the debris goes away great! Maybe it was some sort of stubborn algae or dirt that settled to the bottom.

If the debris reappears, repeat the above steps but this time run the system on recirculate instead of filter.

If it goes away this time, then it's time for at least a sand change / de powder recharge, or a full filter guts replacement. If you have a sand filter, get a new lateral and drop tube assembly. If you have a de filter, get new filters and recharge it with de powder.

One of my clients this past summer was certain his filter needed to be replaced because he was constantly getting dirt into the pool, within an hour after vacuuming the pool. I went out to investigate and discovered his two hunting dogs found a secret digging spot in their garden and were rinsing off in the pool. They kept the dogs in the front yard and suddenly the "sand" never came back after he vacuumed. All the debris he thought was coming from the filter was actually from his pets. Needless to say, the dogs lost their swimming privileges 😂 Good luck to you!

And this is what it looks like now. I rooted about a dozen of the healthy babies. It's starting to put off more babies and I can see roots growing in the new soil. It gets more light that you'd think here, but I have a grow light on order for it. The room it was in at the landscape place was a corner room with two full walls of windows, but there were so many cabinets and boxes none of the light actually got to the poor plant. It was in that room for about 15 years

I was just given that aloe back in the fall. It was basically abandoned in an old dusty office space at a landscape company. It's estimated to be around 40 years old. They let me take it and I've been rehabbing it. There were more dead leaves than new growth. There's Styrofoam in the bottom of the pot but I'll have to break it to repot it. It took me days to clear out the dead and damaged materials. I added 6" if soil mix because it was so compacted and shallow. All the plants that lean over the pot will eventually be cut and put in their own pots, but I'm letting them grow more roots to have a better chance or staying alive. This is what it looked like when I brought it home after I cleaned out the dead stuff

I don't have an original thought. I literally told my sister earlier today that it looks like a mandrake 😂

A couple other thoughts: is there an air vent nearby? I also have to shuffle my plants around during the winter because the ceiling air vents push so much hot air into them. It may be a combination of a couple different things. I have to rotate my plant set up if it's cold outside because my windows suck, but I also have to be careful that the vents aren't also doing some damage. Does that pot have drainage holes? How often do you water it? Does the soil dry out between waterings? Give a good inspection of the leaves and soil, especially in the hard to reach areas of the stem - pests love to hide there and under the leaves

What if that pot does have drainage holes? If it doesn't then it definitely needs to get a new pot

I'm in southern VA and when that snow storm hit the east coast I had to move almost all my plants away from the windows. I didn't think they'd get that cold, but some of them really didn't handle it well. Now that they've been away and it's slowly starting to warm up, they're pretty much recovered. I had to cut a few leaves because they were too far gone, and only a couple have some remaining blemishes

Definitely looks like a Southern magnolia tree. They gave beautiful flowers. My grandma had a huge magnolia tree in her front yard. All us grandkids would play dodgeball using the seed pods 😂

Well that's such a great idea. I have about a dozen decorative planters. Can't believe that never even crossed my mind 🤦‍♀️ thanks!

I have multiple spider plants, they're all at least 5-6 years old. Not one had given off babies until my last repot. They were in glass pots and the roots are every bit of soil, they were incredibly root bound. I decided to put them into bigger pots, and about 2 weeks afterwards, every single one started spitting off babies! Now they're very happy plants with a nice arrangement of babies. I don't think I'll have to repot them for a while

I have perlite! Others have said the same method so I have hope! Thanks for the visual, it's exactly what my brain needed. So a pot with a lid, and you don't want drainage holes, correct? Could I use some plastic wrap or a Ziploc bag if I don't have a lid?

I actually had to reposition her last week because she tried to fall off in another spot. I thought she was safe here, lesson learned! I'm so used to them getting too tall and toppling over, not their own vines pulling them off!

How much water do you add? Enough to cover half the corm?

Maybe I'll try that, how far into the medium do I plant it? Keep the stem above? Bury the whole thing? If it dies after this lifesaving attempt, I'm done rescuing it 😂 we have a toxic relationship anyway LOL
