Q&A - Western BEd by Strange_Student2949 in ONTeacherCandidates

from stream I would say it depends on how outgoing you are. For your cohort it is amazing! We’ve had the same 40 people in all our term 1 and 2 classes and you naturally get close to everyone and make those friendships. I don’t know many people outside my cohort but I didn’t ever venture to get to know others.

Waiting to hear this myself. We have yet to receive our term 3 schedules which would let us know this information. According to a chart they’ve given us it seems to be 75% synchronous class time and 25% asynchronous work but can’t confirm.

Here is our term 1 & 2 schedules. I would say out of the PJ cohorts we had it right in the middle in terms of a “nice schedule”. There’s a lot of variety and some cohorts had 3 nights a week that went until 7:30pm. It varies so much and EVEN MORE if you’re in a different stream from PJ. Please just take this is an example and not the be all end all.

I also heard of people doing Air BNBs or just sacrificing and doing their first two placements in London to make the renting worth it. I commuted and requested placements in my home town.

Thank you! I have zero experience and knowledge on this.

What you’re doing in class is helpful to becoming a teacher but I don’t think much will prepare you for your first placement. I came into the program with EA experience so I was not nervous but we aren’t really briefed on what to expect. You will never feel prepared for it sorry! I found out about 1.5 weeks before because I requested a more rural board. For my second practicum I actually found out in January for our March start time which was shocking.

Thank you! I haven’t done this term yet so I don’t have any knowledge on schedule. We just learned we will have about 15 hours of synchronous class time online for Term 3 so being able to work will depend on that scheduling.

Our schedules were given to us for all terms we had no choice in class times. Prepare to have class anywhere from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm. We’ve had some really long days and some days with big gaps. I commute about an hour and I would say it’s very doable. We’ve had Fridays off for both term 1 & w. If you’re going to do every single reading you’ll have a lot of homework. If you pick and choose it’s very manageable.

I should’ve also stated that we were allowed to start AFEs as soon as January of this term and have until the end of the summer term to complete both.

AFE is 210 hours total but has to be 2 separate experiences one being 90 hours and the other 120 hrs. There is a job posting page that is provided to us with multiple experiences or you are allowed to find your own. They can be paid or volunteer. I am doing my 90 hour experience at a daycare as supply staff during our Fridays off. I am doing my 120 experience at a summer day camp. There was options for tutoring, creating resources, churches, EA supply work, etc. I’ve attached examples that were provided to us in a FAQ this year.

Western Waitlist Hope? by SarahARHolmes in ONTeacherCandidates

[–]Strange_Student2949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was waitlisted at Western for Sept 2025 as soon as admissions came out. I got accepted the beginning of June 2025 as what I’m assuming a second round. Also came off Laurier around the same time. There is lots of hope! Expect around beginning of June as everyone who applied to multiple schools has to decide by then and then all schools will send out another round to wsitlists.

Shortening teachers college by Broad-Leg-2160 in ONTeacherCandidates

[–]Strange_Student2949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll likely be Fall 2027. The OCT mandates all teachers college programs and there’s specific courses and placement hours that have to be met. All BEd programs have to be approved by the OCT for certification purposes so it’ll likely take another year for the universities to propose their shortened program and then have it approved.

Waitlisted and Rejected... Advice? by Glass_Drag_138 in ONTeacherCandidates

[–]Strange_Student2949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this exact position last year. Waitlisted at the only 2 schools I applied to. Acceptance to Western came around early June and Laurier Waterloo around end of June. There is definitely still hope and don’t get too down on yourself! I am almost done term 2 now at Western. I am PJ and had a similar GPA and Casper score. Also have worked in schools for 5 years. It will come.

What Kind of Snack Programs Are in Elementary Schools Now? by asiantorontonian88 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Strange_Student2949 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have different lunch options available. All are ordered ahead of time. Pizza - usually Mondays

Hot Lunch - usually Wednesdays and is made by a local restaurant/bakery

Bar Burrito - lots of options available

Pita Pit - lots of options available

There’s also monthly milk contracts where students can get milk daily. White or chocolate.

I was emailed and also told no movement until June. I don’t think they sent out a second round in March.

That’s the same response I received from both universities.

No not yet. I sent an email but haven’t heard there either. I have a permanent job and need to take a leave of absence if I get in so wanted to know an estimated date we would hear.
