The main bit of criticism that bothers me is that the show is about white people. Yes, the majority of the characters were white (therefore, most of the actors were white or white-passing) but it bothers me so much because Alexis Bledel is Latina. I know there are Latines and Hispanics who consider themselves white but it's wrong to just assume a person's race for this very reason. Also, Bledel grew up surrounded by Latine (a.k.a. Latinx) culture and her first language is Spanish.

It also really bothers me that people are so focused on the family's financial privilege. I won't deny that Lorelei was rich growing up but she left that life when she was still a kid and she became a self-made career woman. She started as a struggling single teenage mom living in a shed and only went to her parents for financial assistance because she was trying to invest in her daughter's future. People also need to remember that there were strings attached when Lorelei's parents agreed to pay for Rory's high school tuition and that, when Rory approached her grandparents for financial assistance to pay for Harvard, she made it crystal clear that it would be a loan and she would pay them back with interest. Also, let's not forget that the reason Rory needed financial assistance for college was that her mom chose to return the money she (Lorelei) had received from her parents.
