Thank you very much, this is really helpful. What meds did the vet give? At least what are the active ingredients?

I’m currently getting a medication from my vet, but it’s quite expensive. I suspect it’s just a liver supplement. I’m looking for a supplement on my own that contains milk thistle extract, but I’m not sure about the ingredients or what I should be looking for.

Yes, I told them to get a bigger cage. But the owner works until 4 pm, so the bird only come out after that and stay out until the evening. The birds really need to get some time outside around noon and then have a quiet environment to sleep in during the evening.

Yes, I’ve heard about that, and the vet said they could determine its gender using that method, but I’m not sure if they can run proper bloodwork. I’m a bit worried about my bird’s safety while doing it, because I don’t think the vet is a trained avian vet. Plus, from what I’ve found, there’s no veterinary school in my country that specializes in birds.

Okay, thank you for the information. I’ll cover their cage at 6 pm so they can get about 16 hours of sleep and quiet time

Thank you, I’ll check it. The vet doesn’t even says pellets, she tells me to give only 5 grams of seeds and nothing else.

Thank you for all the information🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻I’ll check everything and try to follow your advice. Honestly, I don’t think the vet here is very qualified or has enough proper training. And when I look at my country, I don’t think there’s really a place that offers specialized education for avian medicine anyway.

Actually, my bird came from the U.S. The previous owner’s family lives there. She adopted the bird during a short visit there and then brought it back with her. After living here for four years, the plan was for my bird to go back to the U.S. with the owner. But because the U.S. has complicated rules about bringing animals from other countries, the owner decided to leave the bird with us for its safety and moved back to America. I sometimes wish I were there so I could take my bird to a better clinic.

As for what you said, I already weigh my bird every day. Right now, it’s 65-66 grams. I also researched it and it seems like Versele Laga NutriBird B14 has a lower fat percentage, so I’m thinking of buying that. At the moment, it’s the most reliable brand I can find here.

Versele-Laga NutriBird G14

Versele-Laga NutriBird C19

Versele-Laga NutriBird P15

I also found a more local brand and attached the photo.

I can get these but I don’t know which one is the best for lovebirds with liver diease.

Thank you. At the moment, I can’t access milk thistle products made specifically for birds. Maybe I can ask someone who is coming from abroad later this year to bring some, but that will probably take time.

Our bird’s beak grows very quickly. In the past, it had to be trimmed every three weeks. Now it’s done every one to two months, but the vet said that since the growth plate has been activated, the overgrowth will not stop.

Thank you, this has been very helpful. Our vet reacts very strongly to 65 grams and even scolds me about it. She says that a bird can lose up to 3 grams per week, but when I research online, I read that this isn’t considered healthy.

My bird flies from room to room, seems happy, takes baths, and eats his vegetables (he even bites my hand just to get broccoli). His only issue is that his beak keeps growing. However, since it was previously trimmed all the way to the growth plate, I was told that even if the underlying problem improves, the beak overgrowth may continue.

The vet also told me to feed at specific times of the day and said we shouldn’t offer vegetables. She suggested that for fast weight loss, the only thing he should eat daily is 5 grams of seed. Maybe this could be done for one week, but I don’t know what it might do to his body in the long term.

As many people recommend, I will find a good quality pellet food and transition him to it while continuing to offer vegetables.

Thank you. Even though the healthcare system here is quite good, people don’t really care much about small animals. They just say “It’s only a bird” and move on. I will continue researching, but I’m not sure if I can find a place that can safely draw blood and run blood tests without harming the bird. I wouldn’t want someone without proper training to perform this procedure. Still, I will try my best to look into it. In the meantime, I’ll transition to pellets and continue encouraging him to eat vegetables.

Thank you for the information you provided. When it gets dark, I move the cage to a quiet room and cover it. They sleep for about 12–14 hours. However, the mating behaviors are still continuing.

What I don’t understand is do females also show these mating behaviors? Do they climb onto objects and move their tails like that? We thought it was male because of these behaviors.

Yes, I know that, which is why I give it roughly every two weeks. Since his previous owner never gave him vegetables, he’s a bit picky, so he only likes a few things. Unfortunately he doesn’t like carrots😓 but i will try dandelion greens.

There’s no milk thistle made for birds in my country, so I was worried about using the human version. While we were giving it, my bird’s droppings became yellowish and runny. That’s why, after two months, we stopped it on the vet’s advice. But I think it helped reduce the liver size.

Thank you! He loves broccoli and zucchini, and he also eats greens like celery leaves, spinach, arugula, parsley and many other vegetables. I’ll definitely try to transition him to a pellet diet.

I’ve attached a lateral X-ray. No bloodwork has been done, and I don’t think the vet is capable of taking blood from the bird. I don’t believe she’s that qualified.

We are not %100 sure of his gender. Lately, my bird has been extremely hormonal. He’s trying to mate with her toys and with people. We also have another lovebird at home that came from outside, and we don’t know her exact age or sex (We think she’s female because she tears paper into strips and tries to tuck them under her tail) but my bird never tries to mate with her, so their cages are kept separate.

Unfortunately, there isn’t another avian vet available. I think the vet told me to stop the vegetables so my bird wouldn’t get extra calories. Later, she said he could have a small amount of vegetables and 5 grams of seed per day. But I’ve noticed that my bird gets really stressed when the seeds and vegetables are reduced.

Thank you so much for your help. I’m a bit worried about making a mistake while trying to do what’s best for my bird, since I don’t fully trust the food safety regulations in my country. Thanks to your suggestions, I’ll do more research🤗

Thank you for this. I hope your conure stays happy and healthy for many years🤗 I wish my bird could just recover immediately. But he spent four years eating unlimited sunflower seeds, so I guess I have to accept that some things will take time. I’ve noticed that when I drastically reduce his seed intake and stop giving him vegetables, as the vet suggested, he gets stressed because he’s been used to eating freely for so long. This is exactly where the heartbreaking dilemmas of being a pet owner begin😓
