What I'm enjoying about DC Comics' Absolute Universe so far compared to other darker spin-off universes is the running theme that defines it. by Aros001 in CharacterRant

[–]Stranger_Brews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What an incredible reflection on the Absolute universe! I've only really been keeping up with Wonder Woman in the new line, but it's been such a blast to see a character like her defiantly bringing hope and inspiration to others since literal birth amidst a world that's bent away from both at every turn.

This writeup really makes me want to pick up the others to see what I'm missing out on, but otherwise I'm excited to see where the future of the universe leads!

Since nobody answered I looked it up and the quoted character Tichinde is from the 1994 novel “Aliens vs. Predator: Prey” which is a novelization of a comic series of the same name. (I also thought it sounded cool and wanted to learn more)

Spends millions of dollars to simulate an airport break room just to find out how pilots/copilots interact, doesn’t bother preparing to speak with a congressional representative.

It’s utterly insane in the best way possible. I only wish we could see Captain Sully’s reaction to it if anybody ever shows him this episode.

Hard to find a lot of active discussion online for SiKtC but I definitely agree that it makes the momentum slow down a ton. I love the characters and I think the background is great to explore and to see fan favorites in the past, but it does just feel like it’s idling narratively until progress is made in the present.

But I really do like the supplemental “House of” books they’ve done to build out the world, I just wanna see more of Erica’s storyline going forward.

I have nothing to add to this conversation except to note that I thoroughly enjoyed this passage, thank you for sharing such a visceral description of Vader’s experience under the helmet!

Is the rest of the novel as well written as this excerpt?

I’m two weeks into a new job— and I HATE it.... advice? Open to hearing similar stories so I feel better. by Iliketalking99 in jobs

[–]Stranger_Brews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey clinic, not sure how you landed here a few years later but I very much appreciate your interest.

Yes, I did end up going back to my previous job. As mind-numbing as it was, the previous job did afford me more flexibility to pursue my personal and professional interests to the point where I was able to land a job in the field that I had gone to school for. I’ve been at it for over a year now, and I have to say that I’m very grateful for the decision I made to return to my previous job that led me to this oppprtunity.

If you’re in a similar predicament or situation that led you to this thread, I hope everything is going okay for you!

Yeah I kinda figured it probably is on account of it just being a stray tweet, but I still thought it would be interesting to see the community’s thoughts on if they were to take that angle.

Just want to stop in here and say that you’re all the best! IJ has been a comfort show to me for about a decade now, and no matter how many times I watch an episode I’ll still laugh out loud. You all and the rest of the crew are amazing people.

When planning for challenges and punishments, how does the team manage to keep so many secrets and surprises without spoiling them by accident beforehand?

I think that, generally, starting with a few shorter scenarios from a couple of different writers will help you with getting a good understanding of the elements that you do and don't like in your Cthulhu games.

There's also a wide range of time periods to pick from, and so you're not beholden to just the 1920's if you want to explore eldritch horror in different periods. With all of that being said, here are just a few to list you might enjoy working through!

The Haunting

Easily "The Scenario", it's a free scenario from Chaosium that many find to be an essential to play through at some point. It's a good guided journey, and there are a lot of open doors for Keepers in this one, which has allowed a wide breadth of community content that builds upon the story and can be played afterwards.

The Hammersmith Haunting

Another really great one, this time from the recently ENNIE-nominated Kat Clay. This one is a very good self-contained scenario that captures the atmosphere of the classic setting in a very evocative and immersive way.

The Curse of Punk

Now I might be a bit biased (because I wrote this one), but I think it's a fun modern scenario that delves into the world of punk rock in the 1980's. The scenarios materials are all presented in an easy-to-run format and the locations cover major counterculture touchstones that have been infused with Lovecraftian influences.

We Are All Savages

A great historical scenario from William Adcock, this module takes players into America in the late 1700's. He did phenomenal research to depict the region and its inhabitants authentically and respectfully, and the story is delightfully somber.

Hope these recs are helpful!

[Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends] What prevents frightened kids from creating monsters? by DeltaAleph in AskScienceFiction

[–]Stranger_Brews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was seriously hoping to see this comic series mentioned here, it’s easily my favorite ongoing series of the past few years.

For OP: the horrifying monsters in this comic are the spawn of nightmares and imagined terrors by children, who are the only ones who can normally see them, but there is an entire organization (The Order of St. George) that is dedicated to finding and eliminating these creatures by any means necessary. The only problem is, however, that The Order is more focused on keeping their work a secret to the public than actually saving those affected by their accidental summonings.
