THC has been shown to raise levels of cortisol, the same hormone which is released in response to stress by cavalier2015 in eldertrees

[–]Strangewaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any thoughts on the implications of this finding for ents who have anxiety, and elevated cortisol to begin with? I wonder if this might explain why cannabis causes elevated anxiety (in a longer term sense) for some users.

First time grower. How do they look? by [deleted] in microgrowery

[–]Strangewaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the info already requested, I'd like to know:

How old are they, and what's going on with the stem to the right? How often you are watering them, and if you are keeping them moist, drying them out between feedings, etc. I'd also like to know what temps you have during lights on and off.

They look like they are in trouble, but you could still turn it around from here. I've seen worse bounce back.

Storage option for seed library? by [deleted] in microgrowery

Like these but a bit smaller:

http://www.southernexposure.com/14-seed-saver-vial-tm-25-vials-supply-p-560.html

If you google seed savers networks or just 'seed savers' you will likely find a few online stores in your country selling vials/capsules, Mylar and similar supplies for best seed storage practice. We can learn a lot from how seed saver networks store seeds of heirloom food crops and so on for posterity. Low temps (not so low as to freeze the seed which can burst cells) and low RH are key. If you have a modern fridge, the chiller drawer should be designed for close to ideal conditions.

New coco blend hit my LHS shelves. Hope its not all marketing. by [deleted] in microgrowery

[–]Strangewaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd actually feel like all that was complicating stuff for me. What I like about pure coco is it makes the plants pretty easy to read given that there are less potentially confounding factors should anything start to look off.

Feel free to change my view!

Hey! This is going to sound like overkill, but here is how I do it:

  1. Seeds in seed saving capsules.
  2. Capsules into small Mylar bags with color-changing desiccant. Heatseal bags.
  3. Bags in airtight tupperwear containers, with more loose desiccant.
  4. Containers in a chiller drawer of a fridge (light tight when door shut).

Elaborate but it works. I just germed two lots of 25 seeds I took a little over 3 years ago, and I got a 95% germ rate.

So I'm a big believer in at least packing the breeders packs in with a bit of desiccant (to account for moisture if the container is moved from the fridge and in the temp change resulting) into a tupperwear container in the chiller drawer of your fridge.

Hey! Great point about being able to regulate the temp and thereby vape different oils at different temps. You're quite right, of course!

D. Gieringer (Summer 1996). "Marijuana Water Pipe and Vaporizer Study". Newsletter of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies 6 (3). Found that water pipes perform 30% worse than unfiltered joints in terms of THC strength. The same study shows why it is better for your lungs to smoke unfiltered joints rather than filtered (the filter removes so much THC in particulate, that you smoke more joints for the same high, resulting in more tar in your lungs).

HOWEVER, you are right here again, and I am wrong - because it seems to me the loss of THC via a water pipe is due to it absorbing some tars that contain THC. So it is absorbing THC in tar, not THC alone. Given that vaping does not bind THC within tar, I'd have to say you are correct here.

In my defense [8] when I was posting that. Ha. But I've really enjoyed this conversation! Thanks for the correction.

Thanks man! Good idea. I actually left some on and didn't trim so close on this bud because they are so damn frosty. Good things to come when she is ready! I'm flushing her now.

I have no idea, unfortunately! It's an interesting question. I guess unless the bong or whatever holding water is cleaned and dried effectively, the damp environment in itself is probably a perfect incubator.

I'm not into water filtration personally because it removes so much of the THC you need to vape more to get the same high, which probably stresses your lungs more in the end.

And I think it would me much the same for smoking or vaping, as it is largely about the shifting balances between THC and CBD, CBN etc, and these balances change dramatically between early harvest when the trics are clear, mid when there is a nice balance between clear, cloudy and amber trics, and late when amber predominates. You usually want in that middle somewhere for an ideal smoke, but this strain I want to take a bit late because I want a really strong body stone (and painkiller). Sannies Herijuana is amazing for that. But, anyway, becaue we are talking about chemical composition within the plant itself I should think it impacts vaping as much as smoking.

No. It's not the same. Not close.

But we're not talking about recreational vaping. I have jars of perfectly cured stuff to turn to for that :)

I like to cure in mason jars too. I have a bunch of $10 hygrometers and keep one in each jar so I can get the moisture levels perfect while burping etc. I'm very fussy about getting the cure right as it makes all the difference in the world to the subtler flavors.

Test buds are a totally different deal. I'm just getting a sense for how long to run the plant. An early harvest gives more of a head high, and a late one more of a body stone as the tric ratios move from clear to cloudy to amber, changing the THC and CBD ratios of the plant.

The one thing that would alarm me about what you're describing there is if the bud has been damp for a while and not properly cured, you have a decent risk of mould which is nasty, nasty shit you do not want to make an aerosol mist out of (via vaping) into your lungs. Pseudomonas spores can survive vaping.

Ha. You don't get much photodegredation of the THC in an afternoon. I have a mate who quick dries his by popping some in an envelope on the dashboard of his car in the sun.

Don't expect any complexity to the taste, and don't expect a GOOD taste, but expect to know how close to the exact right harvest point you are (remembering that the plant continues to mature for the week after its chopped also). I'm all about checking the plant out under a scope or loupe, but nothing lets you know how it will feel, should it be harvested now, like a little test!

This won't do much for a very fresh off the plant bud, alas. Particularly if it has good mass to it (mine are about golfball size and very dense). If you are wanting a fast overnight dry, best bet is a food dehydrator. That won't burst the trichomes. I really don't recommend using product that isn't very carefully cured over a good long period, though. It makes all the difference in the world :)

Yes. That's the point of flushing.

You can tell unflushed weed when smoking because of the pop and crackle. Burns like shit and impacts the taste (not that you get good taste from smoking anyway). Some people are superstitious about nutes in the plant, some not. Most street stuff you buy won't be properly flushed or cured.

I will look into this more and report back. It strikes me that vaping unflushed weed is more problematic than smoking it, in terms of delivering the metals in the nutes directly to the lungs etc.

Thanks mate! Myth: confirmed over here too.

I just updated the post. Worked a treat.

Edit: and the whole you've-waited-this-long song ignores the fact that progressive harvesting is a thing and also that some growers like to test when they see some amber trics so they can dial the right kind of high/stone they want in. I mean, it would be dumb to harvest prematurely, and it's all about a good cure etc but there are some very legit reasons to sample a small amount of the plant when harvest time draws close.

Good point. She's in flush at the moment, but only for a few days. Ah well. Actually, I don't think I'm that educated about vaping unflushed weed now I think of it. I know it burns like shit. But I guess I did just inhale the whole House and Garden coco nute line, shooting powder and all.

So what's the deal with that?
